Back in June I entered my Horror feature script ‘Sara’s Grave’ into the Truant Pictures screenwriting competition. Today I got the results. I didn’t get through. It’s incredibly disheartening knowing that someone looked at your work and decided you weren’t good enough. I’ve dedicated quite a few years to this script. This was its last chance. I’m retiring the script. Never say never. Some of you knew, most of you didn’t. Princess Coyote was selected for Oaxaca Film Festival’s Global Script Challenge in Oaxaca, Mexico. The screenplay was nominated in two categories, Best Whimsical and Best Overall Script. This is super exciting and absolutely an honor because of the ties of immigration and mixing of Javier’s Mexican heritage with Charlotte’s Norwegian heritage. One of the events of the film is centered around Dia de los Muertos and Oaxaca is where this celebration originates. Oaxaca also has Aztec history which ties in with Princess Coyote herself as she’s given magical powers from Aztec spirits. I entered this festival knowing how special the meaning of it is to the screenplay, but I didn’t ever think Princess Coyote would be selected. When I opened the email about its selection, I jumped up and down, ran out of the house told every neighbor outside, jumped up and down some more and just was completely overjoyed. I have to thank @arigold for giving me a great perspective on deciding what festivals to attend because it really made think about where I needed to be and what felt the most important to me, this festival hits my heart like a Cupid arrow. ... I like thinking this is true. And that the "gatekeepers" know what they're reading when they're reading it and not looking for writing that has a certain structure and dismissing it if it doesn't. Lost my screenwriting motivation...

This might be my first written blog on this page.

Or maybe it isn’t. I don’t know. Whatever.

But for the first time in years (and I do mean years), I considered to give up on this screenwriting thing.  I did the same thing with acting many moons ago. I didn’t book any jobs  and I didn’t like how auditions made me feel about myself. I would question things I never have before and with that, came self doubt. 

Screenwriting was always something I did for fun. Then I realized, maybe I should just do my best to perfect it, and then maybe one day i’ll sell a script. This happened when I was in my early 20s. I’ll be 30 in December. I submitted three (two-page) scripts to this screenwriting contest. All three made it to the top 100, but they didn’t make it past that. This is the second contest I submitted to but the first i’ve placed in. 

I did my best not to get my hopes up. I didn’t tell anyone about it (except for a select few) and even kept the news of being in the top 100 to myself. Today, I got the results and it devastated me. I’ve never had any validation of my writing. Nothing to motivate me to believe that i’m on the right path or that i’m any good. Same with acting. So in my mind, I assume that means that I just suck. My gf said some very encouraging things to me and it did make me feel better. But I still felt like shit. I didn’t even want to listen to music on the way to work (and I ALWAYS listen to music).

Reluctantly, I put my earbuds in and played my “Walking” playlist. Then I switched to Youtube and played “Seven Nation Army Remix” by Glitch Mob, which had recently gave me great ideas for a video game adaption I want to write. And immediately, that feeling of doubt was gone. Well, not gone. But it was covered. I remembered that in the beginning, writing was never something I did for notoriety, fame, or anything. I write because I can’t help but to. It is a part of me just like anything else. I can’t stop. And I won’t. Ever.

Writing is gives me life. It is my escape, my safe haven...these worlds I create need to be fleshed out. If they never see the light of day so be it. They will always exist to me.

Writing a new movie script

I started classes at St Martins college to enhance my screenwriting skills. It's a very interesting course with talented fellow students. 

I just started writing a script. Wrote the first 3 pages for my class. I found tonight a screenwriting contest in my native Greece which I would love to submit it to. So I will start my efforts to meet the deadline. It's on the 30th of September so I think I have a good chance!
