During its release Dark Skies was trying to keep its plot under wraps. Its IMDB storyline says it's about a "terrifying and deadly force" that's after a family. Unless you're dying to see this movie (which I suggest you don't) then don't read this review because I'm gonna give away its "shocking" twist. For starters, the movie is called Dark Skies. So, what lives in the skies that can exist in a horror movie? Birds? Aliens? Bad weather? The next clue gives it away when the movie opens up with an Arthur C. Clarke quote. It reads: "Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." Ok......so this is a give-away answer. It's therefore silly how a movie that's promoted with a secret plot is suddenly giving it away in the opening moment. This is because Dark Skies has an incredibly lousy, weak script. It's that type of horror movie where a ton of weird things happen again and again and again because there's nothing interesting to say about the story.

Set in an ordinary-looking suburban neighborhood, Dark Skies follows the "horrifying" events that occur to the Barrett family (and no, this isn't based on a true story). Lacy (Keri Russell) and Daniel (Josh Hamilton) are married with two boys, Jesse (Dakota Goyo) and Sam (Kadan Rockett). Daniel's been out of work for a few months which is putting a strain on his marriage. One night Lacy wakes up and sees partially eaten food spread out all over the kitchen. She thinks it was just an animal that got in, but the next night an even weirder thing happens. She enters the kitchen and sees canned food stacked up on the table. Animals, obviously, aren't that smart. Daniel responds by setting up an alarm system along with security cameras around the house.

Well, none of that works because more and more strange occurrences start to happen. Sam, in that cliched, creepy-horror-movie-child type of voice, starts talking about how a man, whom he calls "The Sandman," is visiting his bed every night. Flocks of birds fly into the windows of the house for no apparent reason. Lacy has some sort of breakdown where she walks to a glass window and slams her head into it repeatedly. The couple seek help from a specialist named Edwin (an unintentionally comical J.K. Simmons) who tells them all about the "individuals" who are terrorizing them. They ask him why they were chosen and Edwin simply replies "I don't know. We'll never know." And in fact that's true. We never know why the "beings" are so obsessed with the poor Barrett family. It appears that writer/director Scott Stewart wants to keep it a mystery to scare the audience more, but it doesn't work. It just comes off as really lazy screenwriting.

It's a shame because the movie isn't that bad at maintaining a creepy atmosphere (which makes sense considering it's produced by Jason Blum, the guy who also did the Paranormal Activity movies and Sinister). It's just that we eventually get fed up of all the scares. Just when we think some cool plot twists are going to come into the picture our hopes are dashed and nothing intriguing happens. By the end Dark Skies becomes a premise-over-story type of failure.
