Red Seas Under Red Skies Book Review

Scott Lynch's second addition to the Gentlemen Bastard series, PIRATES PIRATES PIRATES (to be allowed to sink in everyone's heads with lots of adventures spindling this novel) the brilliance calibre to rate this novel is enigmatic, and here's why even if many found this book a bit too slow-paced, it was exactly what Gentlemen Bastard's series needed.

Locke and Jean after tragic loss of their very gentlemen bastards are found in the gambling fountain of Tal Verrar, the land of fortunes ready to bet their money over a few deck of cards.

The con-artist Locke Lamora changes his disguise to Lecanto, a fine gentlemen who eyes on everyone's hunger to reel in the fantasies of solaris. We are back on deceiving people, bridging past new challenges yet we are also tapping into the darker sides of Locke's and Jean's character. Scott's brilliancy to remind us our characters are no more than humans that readers relate to breaches in their way of earning their status through the gambling inns.

Ahead of the mess Locke gets swept into, barely keeping above the waters, he is poisoned. Now everything depended on playing puppets under Strago's fingertips. We enter a new avenue on a sea voyage.

Every way possible Scott's foreshadowing gets better and better in the second book. The custom chairs, the deck of cards that mystiques into concrete come to click into place.

Remarkable characters come into the journey. One of the most commonly discussed element of the second book in the sequence is its pacing for the second act. It felt like we were pushing through a whole chunk of 400 pages and more of voyage and unprecedented attacks. However, there was a reason and I believe when I traced my eyes past it I was shell-shocked.

Scott Lynch purposely intended the readers to stay longer in the sea voyage, learn the language of sailors, go down into every meticulous detail of politics in the downplay because Scott wanted us to experience the time taken to shed someone's doubts and trust someone. We were not only in the sea with Locke, but we were experiencing the trust he was building with the pirates.

And I believe this was the best part of The Red Seas Under Red Skies because it wasn't just only a concrete piece of fantastic narrative, it was an immersive experience.

¿Alguna vez habéis tenido miedo de empezar un libro? Yo si, es lo que me pasa con Mares de sangre bajo cielos rojos. Seguramente os preguntaréis "por qué", acaso los libros muerden o algo? XD No, claro que no y tampoco - a estas alturas ya lo sabéis - me dan miedo los libros ni por au extensión ni por el tema que traten, pero en este caso "Mares" es la continuación directa de "Las mentiras de Locke Lamora" y au que éste último dejaba un final muy abierto lo cierto es que bien podría haber sido una novela autoconclusiva. ( Y yo hubiera sido feliz. Ya os digo que "Las mentiras" me encantó!!!) PERO (y si, pero en mayúsculas) no sólo se trata de enfrentarse a una continuación directa cuando la anterior ha dejado el listón tan alto, si no que sólo estos dos libros éstan traducidos. Tanto "las mentiras" como "mares de sangre" pertenecen a una saga de no revuerdo si 5 o 7 o 9 libros. Vamos una saga en condiciones de las que no tradujeron nada más que estos dos libros. Y aún así voy a empezar el segundo mientras me tomo un matcha... Espero no arrepentirme de esta elección que menuda racha llevo... Pero bueno de paso os enseño la tercera de mis fundas nuevas para el móvil. Eso sí que no ha sido una mala elección en absoluto!!! Estoy enamorada y además la taza puede representar de igual modo mi amor por el café o el té. Nonostante non sia stato subito amore a prima lettura, questo bel mattone ha saputo scavarmi dentro e crearsi una nicchia comoda; ci penso e ripenso da quando l'ho concluso e credo che sia uno dei romanzi più belli che ho letto durante il 2020. Avevo aspettative alte e credevo di trovarmi con una storia totalmente diversa, ma non per questo mi ha deluso. Anzi, ho dovuto rivedere le mie aspettative e riflettendoci bene, dopo averlo finito, mi sono resta conto di quanto mi avesse colpito e quanto mi fosse piaciuta la storia ed i personaggi che ne fanno parte. Una storia incredibile. Estremamente originale ed imprevedibile, ci porta a vivere queste (dis)avventure che capitano a questi giovani malviventi senza riuscire a prevedere cosa accadrà. Almeno, per quanto mi riguarda è stato un susseguirsi di colpi di scena, sempre più incalzanti e rapidi, mano a mano che la storia prende una piega più oscura e crudele. L'autore non ha pietà del lettore. Preparatevi perché oltre certe scene che potrebbero turbare (per questo non lo consiglierei a chi è particolarmente sensibile), ci sono anche frammenti che ti spaccano dentro. Una lettura bellissima e che consiglio a chi ama il genere. Vi parlerò sicuramente anche degli altri due volumi, devo solo trovare un po' di tempo per leggerli. This has been a very slow reading week for me. I have spent most of the day resting and elevating my knee that decided to swell this week.
