Not A Cat
(Cuterebra buccata, a gorgeous botfly which apparently parasitizes bunnies? So large I thought she was a cicada when I first sighted her!)

One can see how I initially took her for a cicada:

Bad Newts: Amphibians are in Serious Trouble
My colleagues and I have just had a paper published in Nature, based on our efforts to assess almost all amphibian species for the IUCN Red Lists. The major takeaway messages:
It is a bad time to be an amphibian
Two fifths of all amphibians are threatened with extinction.
Salamanders are the most threatened group; three fifths of all salamanders are threatened with extinction!
Climate change is a major driver of amphibian declines globally
Habitat loss, especially due to agriculture, is a problem for the vast majority of amphibians
Chytrid pandemics have caused and continue to cause catastrophic declines of both salamanders and frogs
Protected areas and careful management are working as strategies! They are actively improving the outlook of some species
As many as 222 amphibian species may have gone extinct in recent times; of those, 185 are suspected extinct but not yet confirmed.
Our paper is Open Access, you can read it here!

Jayvik Modern AUs are hilarious to me because my boy Jayce is NOT playing any sports. He is NOT a jock. He is a gymbro nerd who tries to get his rich sister to play DnD with him, spends his days at the chemistry lab, plays chess and one day he suddenly needs to help the football team covering for someone because people think he must like sports. He doesn't even get along with everyone. He tries, of course, but he isn't the golden boy until the extremely rich and popular girl, president of the student-council, goes all "Popular! You're gonna be popular!" Glinda on him until he becomes popular thinking he's doing something good for the school when he isn't and he's getting carried away by fame and parties when all he truly wants is being with his lab partner Viktor. At the end of the day, Arcane truly was just like High School tbh.

With September underway, let’s take a look at a timely diorama in the Hall of North American Mammals for today’s Exhibit of the Day. The scene takes place on a September morning in Yellowstone National Park, and this mother grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) is showing her six-month-olds how to tear open a rotted pine to find ants and grubs to eat. You’d be wise to avoid stumbling upon this scene in the wild. Grizzly bears are unpredictable and may become aggressive if interrupted while eating or tending cubs. Did you know? The nickname “grizzly” comes from the grizzled, or silver-tipped, hairs on their backs and shoulders.

Polar bears in some parts of the high Arctic are developing ice buildup and related injuries to their feet, apparently due to changing sea ice conditions in a warming Arctic. While surveying the health of two polar bear populations, researchers found lacerations, hair loss, ice buildup and skin ulcerations primarily affecting the feet of adult bears as well as other parts of the body. Two bears had ice blocks up to 1 foot (30 centimeters) in diameter stuck to their foot pads, which caused deep, bleeding cuts and made it difficult for them to walk. The study led by the University of Washington was published Oct. 22 in the journal Ecology. It's the first time that such injuries have been documented in polar bears.

Unique Bear Cub with White Head is First of Its Kind Spotted in Alberta
A photo captured over the weekend by a Calgary family has experts excited about what could be the first spotting ever of a grizzly with a white head but regular brown colouring on its body. The photo was captured while the family was driving back home from the Banff National Park area Sunday, when they spotted the unique bear along with an adult grizzly and another normally-coloured cub. “As we drove by I said to my husband, ‘That cub has a white head,’” Julia Turner Butterwick said. “I had just kind of snapped the picture quickly, and when I zoomed in on the photo I realized he had a fully white head and a brown body...

Something I find odd is how Science Bear knows where the other drives are with their Beesmas drive quest, but the quests that appear after Beesmas ended, They have no fucking clue.
