Here we go! Over the past few weeks, I've bounced between my New Sci-Fi Universe and my old work that I had abandoned for months and months after completing three drafts, beginning to loathe it, and unsure as to why.

Luckily, after a healthy bout of inspiration acquired through reading of Dan Simmons' Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, I felt refreshed and unafraid of being honest about what I liked and disliked about my then-unnamed WIP.

Finally, I now am not only editing and re-writing, but also in a possession of a working title for this novel. Ta-da!

This is NOT a warriors rewrite and is planned to be it's own thing. I am taking inspiration from warriors as well as numerous rewrites, guardians of ga'hoole, wolves of the beyond, and multiple horror and sci-fi movies.

Set in a world centuries after an ancient apocalypse killed humanity, magic returns, causing some animals to gain special adaptions and/or sentience and a smaller some to go fully insane and turn to monsters. These animals grow into groups and societies, with some even coexisting together. However, evil still lurks in the world.

This is a small planned "book" series (in the sense I plan to keep it free to read online at all times) that contains 4 arcs, each arc containing 3 main books, 3 short novels, and 1-2 super novels.

I will eventually include a link for full triggers, but please be aware that cults, abuse (including RAMCOA, physical abuse, and psychological abuse), death, murder, suicide, incest (consensual and not), extreme illness, and self harm are all on the list. This series is recommended for readers 16 and older.

unnamed apocalypse story

status: roughly halfway thru the first draft

this one is new-ish! ok, not really. It's from April 2023 Camp Nano, and I never finished it. I'm hoping to resume writing soon, probably for July Camp Nano. I'll make a WIP intro soon!! | SWEAR! (casually has never made one before)

Anyway, it centers around a bunch of teens who get lost in the huge forest right before the plant-centered apocalypse hits. They have to survive in unfamiliar woods as this freakishly fast-growing plant continues to creep closer and closer, releasing dangerous pollen; not to mention they've gotta get along with each other. featured in this wip are: silly diary entries, hand-drawn maps, new friends, and questionable poetry!

The Quest for Calamint (a Twine game)

About me; I have been writing since I could basically hold a pen, and I've been telling stories for even longer. time for some placeholder jonah lore until i can really let him take over my brain and start writing fic. utc because this got a little long

the Joanah backstory:

the world is set on a system of planets with varying levels of tech/money/rampant industrialism, firefly-style. there’s also ur typical shitty government and a magic system (in development) of ST-like psychic powers

Jonah grew up in a coastal town on one of the calmer, less-industrialized planets. he’s very familiar with boats and sailing, and he and his family would often invent new ships out of old spaceship/cruiser scrap

Jonah’s “ability” (again, the magic system is very much in development) is related to mind reading and control. Think Eragon if you were a cool kid like me and read those books

He joins the as-yet-unnamed resistance against the govt at 15 when his hometown is destroyed

S/I’s backstory:

in case you haven’t noticed my method of worldbuilding is to just steal from the media that captivated me the most 💀

taken from parents as a baby for having powers (either control gravity or rearrange matter like that one guy from BN.HA haven’t decided yet) and put into govt institution

they murder some of the scientists with their powers and break out at like 12 i think

they run away and eventually find themself on the stereotypical multi-layered megacity planet that every science fiction story has to have

turns out that’s where the resistance is based! they’re taken in by the resistance at 13 and then meet jonah when he joins the next year

the current story takes place 10 years later, my S/I is 24 and Jonah is 25. The resistance is coming to a head against the government, Jonah is in a high-up strategist position and S/I is either a pilot or a medic haven’t decided yet. they run around together in their little cyberpunk/sci-fi universe and do espionage and have fun blowing up government supplies <3

Book 21: Cinder by Marissa Meyer (#1 in The Lunar Chronicles)

You have no idea how excited I am for this one. I mean, technically, book 21 is Gathering Blue, but I just made a post about The Giver, so...shh. Let's just keep that secret between you and me...and all the other people reading this post...

We're rolling with the girl power here folks.

If you've never read the Lunar Chronicles, they're basically these books set in a futuristic sci-fi world and the main characters of the books are mirrored after fairytales. So Linh Cinder is a cyborg Cinderella (and she's also a cool mechanic!), Scarlet Benoit (hehe, Benoit!) is a badass Red Riding Hood, Cress is a hacker Rapunzel living in a satellite, and Winter is a rebellion leader princess Snow White. There's also Levana the "Evil Queen" with such an interesting and sad backstory like holy shit-

There's a society on the moon (and the people there have powers) and life on Earth is whack because of this deadly and mysterious disease that is spreading everywhere. Only the moon seems to have the resources for helping fight against it.

Gods I remember being obsessed with this series in middle school.

So let's get started.

I either put Mary into the place of Cinder or I put Zoe in. Zoe fits in really well with the personality/skills, but Cinder is canonically Asian and white-washing is big enough of a problem in this fandom. Plus, I want more badass Mary content here in the fandom. You saw that girl in 3Below; not only is she a social media powerhouse, she also knows how to swing a bat. So Mary takes the place of Cinder. (Plus, I think Zoe could do well as another main character in the Lunar Chronicles...)

I don't want to dive too deeply into spoiler territory, so I'll just say, Mary doesn't have her left hand and leg, and is a cyborg.

She loves technology and connecting with others (even getting to dress up pretty), but in order to make her own money, she runs a mechanic shop. This is also to "repay her debt" to her stepmother, who blames Mary for the death of her husband.

Mary constantly tries to cover herself up in decently clothing or robot grease to bring the least amount of attention to herself.

I really don't want to dive too deeply into spoiler territory, but let's just say Mary is not what she seems (even she doesn't know it).

She falls in love with the Prince of the Eastern Commonwealth, currently unnamed because what is life.

It is really hard to make this AU.

For the other female leads in the series:

Claire as Scarlet Benoit, searching for her missing grandmother and encountering the street fighter, the Wolf(?). I'd call Jim the Hunter, but that sort of ruins the fairytale...Maybe I'll call him the Troll? Oh, but that has poor connotations...

Zoe as Cress, living a lonely life in a satellite as an expert hacker.

Darci as Winter. Honestly, I see her as being a strong leader. (And her romance with Toby? A secret romance between the guard and the princes :')).

Morgana as Queen Levana. Holy shit, I loved her story Fairest.

I know that if we really wanted to play more into the TOA lore, Zoe may just be a better fit for Cinder and Claire even for Winter, but as above, I ain't about to whitewash or racebend characters. Besides, I think Mary and Darci need more time in the limelight.

March Writing Thoughts

Well this ended up being a disastrous month for creating. I didn’t really write or design much outside of my required work! I’m trying to not be too hard on myself for it because in the meantime, we did find a new place to move to and moving to a new state is a lot of work. So obviously that has to come first! I also have to be forgiving to myself: I purposely chose to not give myself deadlines this month because I knew I’d be too stressed to follow through. And I was right!! It would have gone terribly! So even though I don’t feel great about it, I have to give myself the grace to accept that it was the correct choice to make.

Main WIP Check In (aka why the hell haven’t I finished these yet)

I’ve seen a lot of others doing this (sorry for tagging anyone specifically), but I thought it was a cool idea! Pretty much go through your current WIPs and figure out what exactly is holding you back and possible solutions. Putting below a read more because I definitely am going to ramble.

Unnamed Collaborative/Celebration AU [status: currently writing, 75% written] – for as far along as I am on this oneshot, it’s taking me ages to get to the finish line. I overall like it but I don’t think it has the energy it should. I think this might be the first fic that I finish writing and then actually have to heavily go back and edit. It needs some more personality! Also it probably has to do with needing a lot more dialogue. That always holds me back.

Bellarke Sci-Fi/Hanahaki AU [status: posted, 2-3 chapters remaining] – the definition of a story where the lore and world building got too big. I also was on such a writer’s high when I wrote the first two chapters, but now it’s been ages and I’m super overwhelmed by what’s left. I also don’t love my meager outlines for the remaining chapters. I think with this one, I need to sit down and figure out the core plot points and work from there. I’m getting too bogged down in little details when I don’t even know where I’m going. I desperately want to finish this fic so I want to make these a priority.

Bellarke Dystopian Mythology AU [status: posted, 3-4 chapters remaining] – I actually have the summary of the story written out pretty succinctly and shockingly like it. I think this one is largely an issue of just sitting down and actually writing it. Since I’m winging some of the mythology already, I don’t think I should get too caught up in the details. The vibes are pretty cool too so hopefully this one won’t be hard to finish outlining and then write!

Bellarke Shadow & Bone AU [status: posted, unknown chapters remaining] – Torn about this one. I like the premise and what I’ve written and the chance to make the Grishaverse interesting to me personally. But... it also doesn’t really spark anything in me. If I’m honest with myself, this is one I want to discontinue and just leave it at that. Writing that out is probably the answer I needed.

Bellarke PNW fluff AU [status: posted, 2 chapters remaining] – Definitely a story I like more in theory than in writing. I think I don’t feel connected to it very much as an actual story. Probably another one that, if I’m honest, I should just discontinue. But it’s also kind of a sweet easy story, so it could work as a warm up? Eh, we’ll see. I feel like my interests have shifted a lot since then.

Bellarke New England Angst AU [status: posted, 4 chapters remaining] – the definition of why you have to pick vibes or story, not both. I feel kind of lost with this one and not sure I can pull of the direction I’d like it to go in. Also a big case of the outline shrinking as it goes on, I clearly don’t know how I even want this story to end. Very much a part of my era of not planning as well, which isn’t something I can do anymore. Who knows about this one.

Bellarke Dark Fantasy AU [status: posted, unknown chapters remaining] – This story deserves SO MUCH better. I have a solid idea for the whole story and where I want it to go. It’s definitely a tone I’m excited by. I just need to approach it with new eyes and a fresh outline I think. I’d love to spend some time diving back into this one even though I don’t think anyone else really cares about it!

Clurphy Pirate AU [status: posted, 2 chapters remaining] – this one was so fun to start?? It shouldn’t be too hard to get back into. I think the biggest thing is to just finish outlining the last two chapters, I have a pretty good idea of how I want it all to go. It is, however, low on the priority list.

Bellarke Guest Ranch AU [status: posted, 2 chapters remaining] – another one that I just don’t think I care about anymore. I’ve really lost interest in strictly fluffy pieces. I even have most of it outlined but eh. I just think it’ll never really grab me again. Might have to Marie Kondo it and discontinue. 

Honorable Mention WIPs:

Nina/Matthias Horror AU for belated Troped: wildly unfinished outline that doesn’t make any sense

Inej/Kaz Ice Skating AU: I just haven’t committed even though I love it

Stranger Things Zombie Rewrite: tbh mainly waiting to see how the final season goes so I can truly flush out the military angle and then fly through it (also I’m definitely doing way more backstory so that takes a while)

A million other plot seedlings that I shouldn’t touch after looking at all of the listed above

If you’ve made it this far, congrats! I think the conclusion is I need to be more honest with myself about when a project should be abandoned and then spend a lot of time outlining. There’s nothing wrong with that! It helped me write a 78k fic because I knew where the story was going!! 

Anyway back to the drawing board, hopefully April is a better month overall.

Neom: A Novel from the World of Central Station by Lavie Tidhar

The city known as Neom is many things to many beings, human or otherwise. It is a tech wonderland for the rich and beautiful; an urban sprawl along the Red Sea; and a port of call between Earth and the stars.

In Neom, childhood affection is rekindling between loyal shurta-officer Nasir and hardworking flower-seller Mariam. But Nasu, a deadly terrorartist, has come to the city with missing memories and unfinished business. Just one robot can change a city’s destiny with a single rose—especially when that robot is in search of lost love.

My Review: Lavie Tidhar is one of my favorite write and he could write a shopping list and my review would sort of “tought provoking, gripping, original, entertaining”. I love his alternate historical novels, his fantasy novels, and his work as editor of world sci-fi anthologies. That said NEOM is a great story, it made me think of a mix of dream and dystopia. A place for the young and rich which is not far from the reminder of a far away past. A novel that kept me reading, moved me to tears for an old automaton being destroyed, love the characters. I enjoyed it, found it entertaining but it also made me think as the descriptions of NEOM are so similar to those of our world. It can be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend to read Central Station to appreciate all the nuances of this story I strongly recommend it, many thanks to Tachyon Publications for this digital copy, all opinions are mine

July 15, 2002: Born a bastard child to the owner of a successful film studio and international supermodel, Lesley Rushman

Age newborn-14: Is raised by single mother who has boyfriends coming in and out of their lives constantly, one never staying for more than a couple of months, drugs and alcohol constantly in and out of the home, travelling constantly internationally for mother’s work, friends were rare and few, mommy and daddy issues brought on early in life, sexually abused by a few of the boyfriends mom brings in starting at age 10 but Billie stays quiet, bottles her rage and let’s it continue to grow

HISTORY

Born 1/5 of the Alpen Quintuplets, life in front of the cameras began even before entry into the world.

Life on the ice was a calm to every storm she endured, the music surrounding her, the way her blades sounded as the sliced atop the ice, she started early about 4.5 before her first performance at age 5. It was thrilling, it was hers, something she didn’t have to share with her siblings. 

Growing up as 1 of a set of 5 had it’s ups and downs but no matter what, through all of it, it was nice knowing that she always had a friend, always had someone to turn to when she needed it.

The older she got, however, the further disconnected from herself that she felt and by age 14/15, Gwendolyn found herself going through an identity crisis (something she’s still struggling with to this day).

At 16, Gwen began having her friends call her Rory, a nickname that was short for her middle name, Lorelai, in hopes that it would help make her feel more of herself as an individual rather than America’s favorite set of Quints.

17 saw the release of her first single and by 19 her first ever album was recorded and released. 

Making it the Olympics last year was a dream come true and placing both silver in pairs and gold in women’s free skate only fulfilled the dreams of a young girl that had always dreamed of making it that far.

When she’s not on the ice or in the recording studio, 50% of the time she can be found making TikToks and the other 50% of the time she can be found with her best friend, Esme (and there’s even times where both mesh perfectly together)

Gwen has been on a journey of self-discovery ever since their reality show ended. 

Her siblings are everything to her which is one of the only reasons why she agreed to starting up a new reality show of their adult lives, not wanting to disappoint any of them.
