Flash-back : BATMAN (1989-1997)

Ayant pris l’affiche le 23 juin 1989, il y a 30 ans cette année, Batman a été un véritable phénomène, dans les salles de cinéma, mais aussi partout ailleurs, où l’on voyait des gens petits et grands porter des t-shirts ou casquettes avec le fameux logo du film. Dans la foulée de cet anniversaire, j’ai eu envie de revoir ce film qui a marqué l’histoire des adaptations de comic books... et comme j’ai trouvé un DVD bon marché incluant les 4 films de la série qui s’est étirée jusqu’à la fin des années 1990, je me suis offert un mini festival Batman ce week-end.

BATMAN (1989, Tim Burton)

Si l’objectif était de replonger Batman dans les ténèbres, le choix de Tim Burton comme réalisateur s’est avéré judicieux. N’ayant alors que deux longs métrages à son actif, Burton n’avait pas encore tout à fait imposé sa marque au moment de tourner Batman, mais avec le recul, on retrouve dans ce film plusieurs des éléments qui définissent son cinéma : un protagoniste névrosé et marginal, une direction artistique aux accents gothiques, une palette sombre, un humour noir, et un goût certain pour l’extravagance. Ainsi, devant un Michael Keaton peu imposant dans le rôle de Batman, c’est le Joker incarné avec flamboyance et cabotinage par Jack Nicholson qui vole la vedette, pour le meilleur et pour le pire. Aussi : la musique de Danny Elfman est parfaite, en plus d'être complétée par des chansons de Prince!

BATMAN RETURNS (1992, Tim Burton)

Comme le Joker dans le premier film, le Pingouin (Danny DeVito) et Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) prennent presque toute la place dans cette suite. Or, ces super-vilains sont plus complexes et fascinants, apparaissant comme des images de miroir déformant du héros. Comme Batman, le Pingouin est un être troublé depuis la perte de ses parents à un jeune âge. Quant à Catwoman, on dénote chez elle un penchant pour la mascarade, voire le fétichisme, qui n’est pas inconnu à Bruce Wayne. Batman Returns surpasse son prédécesseur à tous les niveaux : plus de folie, plus de grotesque, plus de démesure, plus de perversion… Pas pire pour un film de Noël! 

BATMAN FOREVER (1995, Joel Schumacher)

Joel Schumacher débarque avec ses gros néons fluo, ses gags foireux et un côté très campy (mais pas complètement assumé comme dans la série de 1966), qui dénaturent l'esthétique et le ton établis par Tim Burton. Two-Face est horriblement conçu visuellement et mal joué par Tommy Lee Jones, mais Jim Carrey s'en tire un peu mieux en Riddler, lui qui fait du cabotinage un sport extrême. Puis il y a Nicole Kidman en psychiatre horny pour Batman, Chris O'Donnell en Robin qui se pense vraiment cool, et comme toujours, un Batman figurant dans son propre film, joué mollement par Val Kilmer. 

BATMAN & ROBIN (1997, Joel Schumacher)

Faut presque respecter comment Schumacher a inexplicablement choisi de doubler la mise en réalisant le film de superhéros le plus niaiseux de l'histoire, avec des éclairages tellement laids que ça fait parfois littéralement mal aux yeux, des scènes d'action frénétiquement absurdes, et un blizzard de jeux de mots poches, généralement livrés par Arnold Schwarzenegger qui, au moins, a l'air de s'amuser. Mais comment dirige-t-on Uma Thurman pour qu'elle joue aussi faux? Et la version de Bane est d'un ridicule sans nom, j'adore. BANE! Quant au nouveau Batman, George Clooney, il a l'air de se demander comment il s'est retrouvé dans cette galère, aux côtés de Chris O'Donnell en Robin et Alicia Silverstone en Batgirl qui jouent les rebelles à moto. C'est clairement le pire film, mais j'ai tellement ri!
