‘Het Lammeken’ (the little lamb) is the other of the so-called ‘Schotse Huizen’ in Veere. Like its neighbour ‘De Struys’ (see previous post) it got its name from its gable stone. The house was built in 1539 for Joos Olivers, a merchant of Scottish origin. If you look closely at the very decorative cramp irons you can spot thistles, the national emblem of Scotland since the 13th century. It’s quite a miracle the house survived as intact as it did. Victor de Stuers (1843-1916), a Dutch art historian and politician who is often considered the father of the preservation of cultural heritage in the Netherlands, bought the house in 1881 and donated it to the State on the condition it would be preserved and restored. @museumveere @nationalemonumenten #veere #zeeland #museumveere #nederland #netherlands #schotsehuizen #scottishhouses #architecture #16thcentury #thistle #scotland #gothic #nationalemonumentenorganisatie #victordestuers #culturalheritage (bij Veere) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4K1BW9lmVO/?igshid=svxj1ztmktju

A detail of ‘De Struys’ (the ostrich) in Veere, one of the so-called ‘Schotse Huizen’ or Scottish Houses. The house got its name from the gable stone that can be seen here and was built between 1539 and 1561. Veere was a staple port from 1541 until 1799 for goods from Scotland, mainly wool, destined for the Netherlands. The close relation between Veere and Scotland dates back to the 15th century when Wolfert VI van Borselen (1433-1486), Lord of Veere, married Mary Stewart (142?-1465), daughter of King James I of Scotland (1394-1437). Nowadays the house is part of @museumveere @nationalemonumenten #veere #zeeland #museumveere #schotsehuizen #scottishhouses #zeeland #nederland #netherlands #16thcentury #gothic #architecture #gevelsteen #gablestone (bij Veere) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4KuVAYFvqJ/?igshid=1d7xadxilaqqu
