SOR Doylestown Students Can Help Alzheimer’s Patients by Donating Used iPods and iTunes Gift Cards
We’re reaching out to all Doylestown School of Rock students and former students to donate their used iPods and iTunes gift cards to Music & Memory Foundation that uses music to help Alzheimer's patients. This nonprofit organization is using music to effectively help Alzheimer’s patients to lead happier, calmer lives in facilities across the country.
The gift of music is one that every Doylestown SOR student loves and appreciates every time they pick up their instrument, take a lesson, or play a song for and with friends. Now, they can help to spread that gift to people suffering from Alzheimer’s by donating their used iPods and/or an iTunes gift card to the non-profit Music & Memory organization. The goal of this organization has been to bring personalized music into the lives of the elderly or infirm with cognitive conditions through digital music technology to vastly improving their quality of life.
Music & Memory is working to create a new standard of care for Alzheimer’s patients with the use of iPods and other digital audio systems to reconnect with the world through music triggered memories. The program is already part of the therapy at hundreds of elder care facilities where people live with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges and hopes to continue growing across the country.
The non-profit organization is on an ongoing mission to provide the resources and training for nursing home staff, elder care professionals and family caregivers to create personalized playlist that tap into the happy early memories of the patient. By listening to songs from their youth, the music on these devices helps Alzheimer’s and dementia patients to tap into deep emotional recall through music. This has proven to trigger happy memories that calm chaotic brain activity and helps them to reconnect with the world through music favorites.
For individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, memory for things—names, places, facts—is compromised, but memories from our teenage years can be well-preserved. Science has shown the power of music that is associated with important personal events to trigger memories even for people with severe dementia. By helping these and other elder patients with cognitive conditions to reconnect to early happy memories through music of their youth, caregivers elder care professionals can bring a greater sense of calm and happiness to these patients.
Ask any Doylestown SOR student how music makes them feel and you’re going to hear a slew of glowing superlatives and happy memories. That’s no coincidence as our brains are hard wired to connect music with positive memories. Of course, since they’re young, our students are making new musical memories every day that bring them happiness, fulfillment and comradery.
Sharing that gift of music in new ways such as by donating their used iPods and an iTunes gift card to Music & Memory is just one more way that Doylestown SOR students can learn about helping and supporting others and spreading positive feelings through music. You can bring your used iPods and purchased iTunes cards to the Doylestown School of Rock at 135 South Main Street here in Doylestown, Pennsylvania 18901, or call us at 215-230-3406 to ask how to donate for this wonderful cause. To learn more about how the Music & Memory program works just go to their website at musicandmemory.org.
