Julio Alpuy Uruguayan, 1919-2009 Constructivist View of Montevideo, 1957 Oil on burlap Purchased with funds from the Mary Kathryn Lynch Kurtz Fund for the Acquisition of Modern Latin American Art   Julio Alpuy was born in Tacuarembo, Uruguay. He studied at the Taller Torres-Garcia in Montevideo under its founder Joaquin Torres-Garcia, one of Latin America’s most important artists of the 20th century and the founder of Constructivism in Latin America. He became teacher-in-charge of the Taller from 1946-1951. Alpuy’s first one-man show was held in Buenos Aires in 1948. His work has been exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and many other important museums in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Alpuy died in New York in 2009.   The painting is characteristic of the School of Constructivism—well-defined grids filled with symbolic shapes that serve as metaphors of greater truths, geometric blocks of color, and emphasis of essence over representation. Here, Montevideo, Uruguay is shown vertically by using colorful rectangular blocks containing symbolic details.
