BIOGRAPHY
tw// domestic abuse, alcoholism, pregnancy, death
luna was born into a home that wasn't exactly stable. her parents were constantly fighting, mainly over makani's (her father) alcohol use. luna remembers the night she spent holding her younger sister as she cried, whilst her parents fought only one room over. nothing changed for years, until finally makani had a little too much to drink. instead of taking his anger out on a wall (like he normally would), he actually took it out on beth (luna's mother) instead. that was the final straw - luna took it upon herself to stop her dad for good. one day, when her father was out buying more liquor, she convinced her mother to pack. beth actually listened.. packing as fast as she could before finally filling the car with both bags and her children.
luna hasn't been back to hawaii since. she was 16 when they left, and the way she saw her father treat her mother... she was worried she would find someone like him - someone sweet with honeyed words but their actions say the reverse. yet that wasn't true, as when she was 26, she finally met the love of her life... cullen monroe.
they met in a wendy's, totally romantic, right? the moment he shared his fries, luna was hooked. even when cullen was hired on the police force, whilst she was worried for him, she supported every decision.
a few years later, cullen comes home to a nervous luna. he's confused, until she pulls out the pregnancy test that is positive. he's ecstatic, picking her up and twirling her around the room before whispering sweet words to her stomach. that very same year.. things went very wrong.
cullen wasn't answering luna's texts. she's 8 months pregnant, sore practically everywhere. that's when the door bell rings, the small female struggling to stand before walking to the door. as she opens it, she's greeted by the chief of police.. telling her that cullen was killed by a rogue shooter that very night.
the chief will never forget the sound that came from her.
when benjamin is born, she finally can't take it anymore - so she packs up and moves once more. this time, to aurora bay. she's been there for 5 years now.

Executive Action Assessment of Issue
1. Trump stated that he will “always uphold the second amendment”. He believes that in order to stop gun violence we need to construct more mental health facilities. He stresses the importance of both the second amendment as well as keeping guns away from the mentally unstable. His goal is to make sure that law-abiding citizens always have the right to bear arms. Recently he has even shown support for stronger background checks.
2. I agree with his position. I agree that we should probably have stronger background checks, I also agree that mental health plays a role in gun violence and can be slowed through the use of mental health facilities.
3. The Department of Justice; Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives manages my issue.
4. Its mission statement is that it protects communities from violent criminals, criminal organizations, the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, the illegal use, and storage of explosives, acts of arson and bombings, acts of terrorism, and the illegal diversion of alcohol and tobacco products.
5. The secretary of the Department of Justice is William Barr. Barr worked for the C.I.A before becoming U.S. Attorney General under Bush. This makes him professionally qualified to lead the Department of Justice and is not merely a political appointment. He impacts my issue because William Barr is planning on ways to decrease gun violence by improving background checks and focusing on laws in the criminal background check system. However, currently, he has stated that “our discussions on the legislative aspects of this (gun violence) have been sidetracked because of the impeachment process on the Hill”.
6. In the Bureau of Alchohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the firearm section would be most suitable for responding to my issue because my issue has to do with the 2nd amendment which is all about firearms.
7. The action taken on my issue is quite slim. Trump is planning on cutting funding to the Department of Justice which oversees the ATF. The deputy director has stated that “we trimmed into muscle, now we’re trimming into bone”. I do not think this is a viable approach to resolving my issue but it seems that Trump thinks that the ATF is not a necessity. Decreased funding could lead to decreased knowledge about the subject which could, in turn, lead to less progress.
8. The subject of the article is that “Experts Worry Active Shooter Drills In Schools Could Be Traumatic For Students”. The authors are Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Sophia Alvarez Boyd, and James Doubek. The context is that there has been a 6 percent increase in students telling researchers that they are worried about a school shooting this year. The perspective of the article is relatively neutral because NPR is in the center. The significance of the article is that drills might be doing more harm than good. Well, the conclusion of the article is we should treat such drills as lock-down drills and less like an active shooter drill. It should be practiced in a calm manner that helps students understand what it means to be in lockdown. I agree with this article, in order to reduce anxiety and fear in students active shooter drills should be conducted in calm manners and some schools are taking it too far.

Ahoy Mateys!
I am brand new to this platform. I just signed up because I recently started following a Youtube Channel called Photo Assignments. That group started about 3 years ago and I am just starting out today. In the introduction of the Photography Assignments Channel, Ted Forbes (The Art of Photography) suggested that we sign up for a Tumblr account. So being a good student, I decided to follow his lead.
I am a sailor and I enjoy taking photos. My wife Jojo paddles Hawaiian outrigger canoes and our dog Lulu is starting her own blog and that is why you’re going to be witness to a mish-mash of all kinds of stuff in this Tumblr blog. I also author a few other blogs, so I will be treating this space as my laboratory, testing ground and/or staging area until I am comfortable enough with the platform to actually publish a blog with it.
I’ll give you a little background about my photography. I have been taking pictures since I was 5 or 6 years old. I remember my very first camera, a Kodak Brownie that my father gave me. I would shoot black and white photos while traveling with the family every summer throughout my childhood. From then on I recall going through a series of Kodak Pocket Instamatic cameras that took those super easy-to-use 110 film cartridges. It wasn’t until I got into High School when I would own my first 35mm SLR Camera (again a gift from my parents).
That 1st SLR was the infamous Pentax K-1000. Boy, that camera sure did make me feel like a grown-up. I was so stoked to have finally made it to the big leagues that I started taking my photography to the next level. I even set up my own personal photo lab in one of the bathrooms of the house. Truth be told, that was just way too much work and pretty expensive for a kid in high school. I think I dabbled in the darkroom for only a few months because it was so much easier to just drop off those film canisters to the photo store and wait a week to have the images professionally developed. That darkroom stuff was fun for a while, but way too much work.
In college, I managed to destroy a Canon AE-1 which I loaned to a friend to take on a hiking trip. When I got the camera back, it was all sticky and completely ruined. Apparently, there was a leaky fruit punch container in the same backpack that he was carrying my camera around in. I learned early on not to loan gear to friends, unless it was something I could afford to lose. Luckily for me though, that little hiking faux pas was my chance to upgrade my AE-1 to the AE-1 Program which came out that same year (1981). I never got to thank my friend because I guess I was still a bit angry about having to spend $700 that I didn’t have to replace my camera (I think I had to work an entire summer for that single purchase). I would hang on to that new AE-1 Program for over 15 years. To be perfectly honest, I may still have it in storage somewhere, but I’m thinking it may have gotten sold at one of our last moving sales.
Fast forward to the digital age of photography. Those original DSLRs were frankly too damn expensive for a hobbyist. I would have to wait. In the meantime, I must’ve owned at least a half-dozen point-and-shoots. I can recall owning Olympus, Fujifilm, Canon, Panasonic and Sony gear. None of these were really serious cameras. They were handy dandy gear that could be tossed into Jojo’s purse or my backpack (these were before the advent of the phone cameras widely used by most folks today). I think I started buying these bad boys from the time that 1.3MP was the most typical resolution. Today, my iPhone’s camera is almost 10 times as sharp as those early digital cameras.
A fairly long time had passed since I owned a “real” camera and I had never before owned a Nikon. So, in early 2015 (February), I was lucky enough to win all 4 quarters of the Superbowl pool and ended up $400 richer than I was pre-game. I decided to get myself an entry-level DSLR. I went to Costco and saw that the Nikon D3300 Kit was priced at $499.99. That’s $100 over budget, so I decided to wait. One day I was shopping at Sam’s Club and noticed that they had an open box of that same kit and the price was right at $400. Voila! I was able to get into a DSLR at no cost to me (so you could say I lucked into it).
In the summer of 2015 I was asked to chair the Transpac Honolulu Photography Committee. For those who don’t know, the Transpac is a Trans-Pacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu which is held every other year. At that time, I was on the Waikiki Yacht Club’s Board of Directors serving as the Rear Commodore for Power and was very involved with all things WYC. I took over the committee and have been chairing it ever since. One thing that serving in this capacity brought to my attention was how much I needed to improve as a photographer. I was surrounded by professionals and I was merely taking snapshots whilst they were capturing some of the most exciting images imaginable. Action shots of racing yachts from the water, from the sky, you name it and they were capturing it. It made me feel amateurish, mainly because I was.
This year, I’ve decided to up my game. I purchased a second hand Nikon D5500 on Craigslist and decided I would start improving myself as a shooter. I took a lot of Transpac photos again this summer and I decided I wanted to shoot my wife’s Na Wahine O Ke Kai Outrigger Canoe Race from Molokai to Waikiki (41 miles). The first time she did the race was 2014 and I didn’t have the gear. She skipped a few years, and when she did the race again in 2018, I was the Commodore of the Yacht Club and I was away on the Mainland at a function hosted at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, so I missed the women’s Molokai race last year. This year, I wanted to capture the event in photographs, mostly for her to show what a truly challenging accomplishment the race is. I took a lot of shots this year and you may be able to find some of that work if you search SmugMug and Facebook. I still want to improve my skills which is why I’ve decided to start these Photo Assignments on Youtube.
I know that this was a really long post for my first Tumblr post, but I wanted to introduce myself by letting you know a little bit of my background and more importantly, why I am here. I’m not sure where I’ll be taking this, but at least I have posted something of a brief history along with what I hope to achieve with this social media space. Wish me luck. It is my intention to share without reservation, so I hope you all enjoy seeing my process from day one... Aloha!

The Atlanta police captain, Jay Baker, said of the shooter that he “was having a bad day.” An unfortunate choice of words. Baker, said the young man was trying to eliminate a sexual temptation. I don’t think Baker will be asked to provide further comments.
Cold. Rain. Waiting for warmer weather that is due on Saturday. My back pain somewhat improved. I am able to sit at the desk for an hour in the morning. (There is no need to sit longer. The pandemic depression...I am bereft of ideas.)
More dental work to be done but they canceled me. Dammit. I want to get this over with.
Note: Much written about James Levine. Just one memory... Whenever he did “Wozzeck” there were plenty of empty seats. The musicians handed them out to friends. I was one of the lucky ones. At performances I saw lots of colleagues when the lights came up at intermission. I liked Levine’s “Wozzeck” but didn’t get much out of his “Lulu.” Again, a comp seat. And now, as I sit here at the desk, many nights-at-the-opera memories are jarred loose. I am one of those who welcomed supertitles (Levine didn’t want this). Being your basic monoglot, no amount of study could prepare me for what was being sung. The supertitles helped and the way they were presented, on the back of the seat in front of yours, purists were not importuned by them.

Joe Biden and Kamala go to Atlanta to talk about hate crimes. Afterwards, Joe slips climbing the stairs to board his airplane. Much is made of this. Life isn’t easy for us old guys. (But we remember Mike Pence stumbled getting on Air Force Two last year. It happens.)
Jennifer Weisselberg, formerly daughter in law of Trump’s longtime bookkeeper, speaks up. Something very familiar looking about her. She looks so much like a news anchor from the past. (Jessica Savitch? Poor lady...her life ended so tragically...)

First day of spring. I glance at my empty datebook. In the old days I’d be anticipating a spring season at the ballet. (Unfair!).
Venture out. The gates at Lincoln Center have been removed, allowing people to walk near the fountain on the plaza.
Later: Turner Classic Movies...”Anatomy of a Murder.” This came out when I was in high school. I have no memory of it’s having come to Oak Ridge. Did it? It is about a rape, daring stuff at the time (’59). That might have ruled it out. Funny to think of a time before movies had ratings. Lengthy courtroom sequence...and playing the judge is none other than Joseph Welch (!), the lawyer for the Army-McCarthy hearings, famous for having called Joe McCarthy down (”have you no decency?” etc.). Big stars. James Stewart et al. Music by Duke Ellington, who does a cameo. Otto Preminger, once again pushing the envelope.
to be continued
