My first "solo" travel... with random people.

Being a book worm has its own perks and I savoured the fruit of my weirdly-inspired academic excellence at the age of 11 years old, in 1996. My beloved teachers signed me to a general knowledge contest on the last grade of elementary school, and by the grace of Quetzalcoatl, Athena and Thot, I managed to be a finalist and win a week-long trip to Mexico City (along with a bunch of kids of my state). The prize included to meet the president, but to be honest, that was not even interesting for me, it kind of came with the "package" and was unavoidable.

As I said before, I liked Mexico City because of my multiple trips with my mom, I loved the good food and the city buildings, so the trip for me was similar to my regular vacations... But in fact, it was my first time to travel without any supervision from my parents (or any other people I knew before). However, I´ve always been very open to the "unknown", and back then, I didn´t mind much who I was going with and I wasn´t expecting much, but to my surprise the whole thing turned out to be a great experience.

All the nerdy and good hearted bunch of kids that I went with were friendly and all the places we visited were spectacular. We had planned activities back to back for the whole week, and I was barely able to sleep and have a thought for myself, and I think I only called back home once in the whole week (I will check this later with my mom, but I´m pretty sure I was a very detached child).

The week went away through a whirlwind of places: La Secretaría de Educación Pública, el Palacio de Gobierno, el Zoológico de Chapultepec, el Campo Marte, el Heroico Colegio Militar, Teotihuacán archaeological site, a fancy dinner with the president (Ernesto Zedillo back in the day), a bunch of other places I barely remember and a farewell party at the end of the week with all the smart boys and girls in the huge hotel we all were staying (easily around 400 children). One of the things I remember the most was talking with some military men, as we were having lunch with them in the Campo Marte (a military base), asking them about their schedules and regular life. Not a common thing to do.

Now that I think of all of it, it was a little bit surreal, and it marked my life for good. Making a quick search, I found that nowadays the prize for the same knowledge contest in Mexico (Olimpiada del Conocimiento Infantil) is a boring and lame "scholarship" of $1,000.00 MX pesos (or $50 USD) every month for 3 years and only if they maintain their excellent notes. A total bullsh*t I say. That´s not a decent price for being the most badass book worm of the whole elementary school, and I say they need to change it back to this amazing trip with great food, guided (educative) tours and fancy hotel.

This was the first city out of México that I ventured to live in. The only thing that I knew about it was the things I had read in some history books about the Jacobite rebellions, their national hero William Wallace and a romantic and fictional novel called "Outlander". For this first adventure, I got a scholarship (a good one!) from the goverment that allowed me to apply -and finish- a master´s degree in the University of Edinburgh (with merit!). Also, it gave me the opportunity to mingle with people from other countries and make everlasting friendships. All the things they say about europeans being cold is a lie, I must tell you. Ryu: What does Taiji know about girls?

Keigo: My guess would be about as much as Ji-Hyun does, which is to say nothing at all. Anyway, they were being kinda noisy, so I told them to keep it down because Senjirō is resting.

Ryu: Is he feeling any better?

Keigo: He said he'd be all right. You know how he always thinks he's getting sick. Sometimes you just have to give him an ibuprofen and a cuddle, and he's fine in no time.

Ryu: You have to give him an ibuprofen and a cuddle, you mean.

Keigo: You know Senjirō. When he's sick, he'll gladly cuddle with anybody he trusts.

Ryu: Do you think he's okay, or is he really getting sick?

Keigo: I'm sure we'll know by morning.

Ryu: I hope he's not getting sick, but if he is, better now than while we're on tour.

Keigo: Yeah. Remember how bad it was last time? Taiji got sick from whatever weird street food he bought from some random stall in San Myshuno, and then Senjirō was convinced it was something contagious rather than food poisoning and literally made himself sick from anxiety over it.

Ryu: I don't know which one of them was worse to take care of, honestly.

Keigo: The worst one to take care of was Haru, and he wasn't even ill. He made such a scene about how gross it all was, and said he wasn't going to sleep in the same hotel room as Taiji.

Ryu: Let's never have four of us in the same hotel room again.

Keigo: Agreed. You want me to run upstairs and tell Ji-Hyun his sister will be here to get him in an hour?

Ryu: No, I'll go. I have to remind Haru about his physical tomorrow anyway. Sarah said we all need to get checked out and get vaccines and stuff before we travel internationally, and you know how Haru always tries to avoid doctors.

Keigo: Oh, crap. I almost forgot about those. Is everyone's scheduled for tomorrow?

Ryu: Me, Haru and Taiji are getting ours tomorrow. You and Senjirō are going the day after. I asked Sarah to schedule you and Senjirō together because I figured he'd handle it better if you were with him.

Keigo: Thanks for that. He hates doctors even more than Haru does.

Ryu: On the topic of medical stuff, Sarah said the company's in the process of hiring our tour team. She wanted to know if we preferred a male or female nurse to go with us.

Keigo: And what'd you say?

Ryu: Male. You never know what we're going to need, and Senjirō and Taiji would be too embarrassed to be checked by a woman if it was something really private. The offerings are numerous: automatically locking doors, bullet-resistant tables, Kevlar backpacks, artificial intelligence that detects guns and countless types of training exercises, like breathing techniques to avoid panic during an attack.

"Wow, you're full of weird facts! How do you even know that?"

When I say I spin and people say "What, like you do exercise bikes? Is that a kind of dancing? What's drafting? What's a hackle?" it's like if I started talking about my cooking hobby and my friend asked "What's salt? Also, what's cooking?" Well, you see, there are a lot of stages to food preparation, starting with planting crops, and cooking is one of the later stages. Salt is a chemical used in cooking which mostly alters the flavor of the food but can also be used for other things, like drawing out moisture...

"Wow, that sounds so complicated. You must have done a lot of research. You're so good at cooking!" I'm really not. In the past, children started learning about cooking as early as age five ("Isn't that child labor?"), and many people cooked every day their whole lives ("Man, people worked so hard back then."). And that's just an average person, not to mention people called "chefs" who did it professionally. I go to the historic preservation center to use their stove once or twice a week, and I started learning a couple years ago. So what I know is less sophisticated than what some children could do back in the day.
