Pairing: Ernst Schmidt/Helmut Zemo
Summary: Schmidt, a throwback omega with physical traits that keep him on the outside of society, ends up in the sights of a dangerous and possessive man when he turns up in another universe after an experiment on the station goes wrong. Excerpt:
Keys jangle and the door screeches as Zemo steps in, crouching in front of Schmidt’s mat. Schmidt tries to look smaller and uninteresting. There’s nothing he can do but wait and hope Zemo gets bored fast. “There’s something about you,” Zemo says, his hand firm on Schmidt’s jaw as he turns his sweaty face up to meet his eyes. His thumb strokes Schmidt’s chin idly and Schmidt barely keeps himself from leaning into it. Zemo might not be an alpha, but the command in him pulls on his stupid omega instincts just as much. “What is it,” Zemo muses, sharp eyes searching Schmidt’s face. “You don’t do anything, yet there’s something.” “No,” Schmidt grits out around clenched teeth. “There’s nothing.”

MTB Season Recap: Part III
(This is the final part of my MTB season recap. Click here for the first part and here for the second.)
The leaves have fallen. The air is crisp. Pies are baking. And it’s State Cyclocross week...so I better wrap up this MTB season and move on!
RACE 5: Sugar Bottom Scramble (August 20)
Sugar Butt! One of the better-known, infamous trails in all of Iowa. Up there with Decorah et al. It’s been a staple on the IMBCS schedule forever and the hordes of fast Iowa Citians make this one of the best events on the calendar. I had heard all kinds of things about Sugar Bottom:
- “It’s hilly.”
- “It’s really bumpy!”
- “I hate it.”
- “I LOVE IT!”
So I didn’t really know exactly what to expect. Hills...I knew I liked. Bumpy? On a rigid singlespeed, not so much. A rain shower rolled through the morning of the race so everything was delayed two hours. Slaymaker and I rolled into North Liberty and the ground was damp. Hmmm...could be interesting!
We arrived and rode the south loop as I’d heard it’s the more challenging loop and we’d be hitting it first off the road. Rooty and slick in spots? You bet! But the sun was coming out and it would continue to get better. I really enjoyed this south loop to be honest. It had the MOST AMAZING trees. I’m no tree expert but they were SUPER COOL. I did not feel like I was riding in Iowa. It was fast, flowy and with just enough elevation. Not real punchy stuff but some good climbs where I could really get on top of the gear. Side note: I had slapped a 20T on the back for these last two races knowing they’d be hillier. I was happy with this decision.
Back to the car and we got ready and mentally prepared for the shitshow about to go down. Ledger was pulling bits out of his tire and trying to flat before the race even started. A fast bunch had shown up - big surprise! But I was feeling good about the supposed elevation and a nice long uphill gravel start.
We sat at the start for a while. Then they said go. We went! I found a decent spot. Yelled at Todd to latch on because why not? I’d harped on him ALL YEAR to get better starts. I recall he had a good one this race. I just kept mashing on the 36x20 as the road pitched up. I LOVED THIS. Went to the front and said LET’S GO. I didn’t want to lead into the woods so I let a couple guys slip by. Todd is immediately on my ass. NICE JOB DOOD! I let him go and try to hang on. YUP. It’s still slick!
A couple more guys pass then I settle in. We wind back and forth, up and down. I catch back up a little on one guy and get out of the south loop mostly clean (that last section was my NEMESIS). We hit the gravel and I mash like HELL to get past a couple guys. We go past the start-finish and Kaden comes zipping back by me right before we hit the tight stuff again. It was a bold move, but a good move. And it paid off for him.
Anytime the trail pitched up I was RIGHT ON HIS ASS but couldn’t do anything with it. They were just CRAWLING up the climbs and killing me on the descents. I let a couple people past and I was deflated. I was DONE. Came around with a loop left to do on the north end and I had all but given up. No one was in sight and I didn’t know what was going on. I stopped to fix my damn seat ONCE AGAIN and let the Cat 1 leaders go by. I got back to the climbs and could hear or see someone ahead. SMASH SMASH SMASH. I could see Kaden and I was not going to let him get away. I took him. Then I came up on another couple guys. The second half of that last lap I rode like mad and made up as much ground as I could. A group of three of us got stuck behind another rider as we came to the finish. As it opened up I went for it, not wanting either of them to stick around. It stuck and I was able to roll in for 7th.

I was less than 30 seconds behind 6th which was a bit disappointing considering how poorly I’d ridden in the middle of the race. I was kicking myself for that. But I was pleased with my recovery at the end of the race. Todd’s good start ended with a great finish in 4th place (see fast starts DO help)! Another solid day in points. However, I was on the outside-looking-in when it came to making the series podium. After Sugar Bottom I was sitting in 4th. Regardless, I’d give it my best shot at Whiterock.
Despite an up-and-down performance, I did REALLY enjoy the trails at Sugar Bottom. Tons of variety: hills, rocks, roots, technical, flow...FUN! They are a gem...I will definitely be back!
RACE 6: Liberty Bell Cup at Whiterock (August 26)
Ah, finally. It all comes down to this. Much like last year, my final standing in the series points would come down to the last race of the season. OH THE DRAMA! I was pretty worried I wouldn’t make the podium for series points. I was sitting in 4th and, I’m too lazy to look up the points right now, but let’s just say it wasn’t looking good for me. Especially if the 3rd place guy showed up, which he indicated he would do the week before at Sugar Bottom. I was kind of down on the drive out to Whiterock. I shrugged if off and said, “What the heck! Let’s see what we can do. Might as well let it all hang out!”
Well, positive #1 of the day was that Mr. Third Place wasn’t there. So I had a shot. But I needed a good result. I think in my head I had figured I needed a 2nd or 3rd place finish...by no means guaranteed. But I was feeling okay about my chances. I knew Whiterock well after racing marathon there last year and the climbing was probably the most demanding on the entire schedule.
As always, some fast fellas showed up (Jim, Tyler, Kris) and a roadie (Jesse) that I knew would do well on a course such as this. Fortunately, Schmidty had decided to run the Comp race...why the heck not? His placing in the points for his division was already solidified. So let’s chalk that up as positive #2 of the day.
Off we went and I slotted fifth in the bunch with Jim, Tyler, Kris, and Jesse ahead. The first couple miles were fast and DOWNHILL which is not my forte, as has been well-documented. So of course I had the rest of the field UP MY BUTT wanting to get by the whole time as we fly downhill. Well guess what? We’re gonna have to go back up at some point. That’s what I kept telling myself at least. Anyway, I kept hemorrhaging spots and finally caught a little break when we had to climb back out of a creek valley. That temporarily stopped the bleeding.
We rolled along Riverside and I had to be somewhere around 10th. I was not in a good place mentally. But nothing cheers me up more than reaching that old cabin and looking up to see the WHOLE FIELD laid out before my eyes. I put my head down and JUST WENT CRAZY. I put everything I had into that climb. And guess what? I nearly bridged to the leaders on that one climb alone. I made up 20 seconds. On a climb that’s at most a half-mile long. With one gear. I was back in the race! At this point I was in 5th but I could see the leaders. And on a day when the legs and lungs were game for climbing that was all I needed.
Much to my surprise I caught Tyler going DOWNHILL. Something was up. With his moto background he is insanely good at descending. I don’t know what it was but he had been in Colorado so maybe he got a little dinged up there (or doped up or maybe it was just the climbing). Anywho, I slipped by and didn’t ask questions. We got to the second big climb and I motored past Jesse and right onto the tails of Jim and Kris, the leaders. I had arrived! And I felt great. Now I fully expected these two to try dropping me at this point. But strangely they didn’t. And this was a huge tactical mistake. Maybe they didn’t have the horses to do it at the time but they let me stick around and I had no qualms with that (although I kept expressing concern that Jesse was still hanging around back there, which of course he was).
For as much as I’d stunk descending the first couple miles of the race I knew the finish sat back up at the top of some good climbing. I had preridden the finishing climb and I liked what I saw. We crossed back over the road and into the final section as one happy trio. Between the three of us someone was likely to win. The tense moment of the race had arrived. I love these moments. When to go? How hard to push? It’s the best!
We crossed the creek and hit that big switchback, this time going up. Of course I was off the bike and running but to my surprise so was Jim. He was not feeling it. I ran hard and stayed with Kris who was riding it. Jim was done. It was down to the two of us. I was content to sit with Kris. From racing with him most of the season I knew he wasn’t a huge fan of the hills. I would just bide my time.
He kept saying I could go around and I kept declining. Finally, after about the 5th time I finally agreed and went. There was still a ways to go and I thought it was a bit early to make my move and I didn’t really NEED to win today. But what the heck? So I went around. As soon as I do that we get a bit of a descent and OH GREAT I’m not able to shake loose from Kris. Crap.
But lo and behold she soon turns uphill again and I go fairly hard. Enough to get a small gap. And I don’t look back. I ride at about 90% pushing when I can. Then I see the campgrounds and I turn it up a notch. All the way to the finish...out of the woods, all alone, fists raised...I HAD WON. My first win as a Cat 2. I was as surprised as anybody.
But on a hilly course, ya gotta climb, and boy she wanted to climb on this day! I spun around, grabbed a Firetrucker, and watched everyone else finish. It was nice, surreal, surprising: a guy on a junky singlespeed bike just mashing up some hills. BTW, I was right about Jesse coming hot: he ended up third not too far behind Kris.
It was a fantastic way to finish an up-and-down mountain biking season. To top it off this was the designated USAC State Championship for mountain biking so they gave me a KOOL medal! I had gotten so wrapped up in the race itself I had forgotten about the series points. With the win I was solidly in third place for the season. So on this day I got to stand on two podiums:
Tumblr media
^^^ Cat 2 RACE Podium: 1) "State Champ” Jason, 2) Kris, 3) Jesse
Tumblr media
^^^ Cat 2 SERIES Podium: 1) Tyler, 2) Kris, 3) “Green Hat” Jason
Sorry no photos from actually racing. :( Kudos to Rob Cook for getting this race rescheduled and run!
Sometimes you’re just lucky, the course suits you and your bike, you have a good day, the stars align and...you only need one gear to win! ;)
Until next year...cheers!
