@schaway / matthew mcginnis asked :  it was an accident, falling asleep on the couch. when terry makes himself known, some instinctive part of matt tries to wake up, but exhaustion only serves to make him sink further into the cushions. “ go away, ” he mumbles into the couch pillow, barely intelligible, completely unthinking. he’s tired.

He hadn’t meant to stir his brother. Truly, it was an accident. Sneaking back into the house at night was the hardest thing in the world when everyone inside could wake up at the sound of a pin dropping. Terry supposed it also had to do with their training. Both intentional, and how they’ve adapted to each other’s presence. He jolts himself awake whenever there’s an inkling of Matt beyond the corner, just as his little brother is attempting to do now.
It is entirely unnecessary.
An inkling of worry pitters at the bottom of his stomach. Had Matthew waited up for him? Terry’s brows crease and he chews on the inside of his cheek. Made a mental note to not be out so late when they weren’t busy with patrol.
“Yeah, yeah,” he shrugs off Matt’s protests, walks over, and gently scoops him into his arms. After his training, carrying his brother was easy, along with anything else over a hundred pounds. “Not before we get you to bed.”
Bare feet pad through the house, muscle memory taking him to his brothers room. There he laid Matt back down, and pulled the covers over him. Everything being slow and meticulous to try and avoid rousing him any further.
“Night, Matt,” he mumbles, now at the door. With that, he let the door close softly behind him.

There’s an explosion. They were chasing someone on foot and something went off, sending them both back, and it’s so fucking sloppy. Stephanie normally isn’t this bad. She doesn’t fully register the pain either, only remembers shielding Matt from the brunt of it. Or attempting to. An annoying ring sets in her ears. She’s sent into a panic, calling out for Matt ( he’s just a kid and she got him hurt. He’s fifteen and she got him hurt ) until --
He’s alright. Okay. Cool. Crisis averted. Matt sounds mostly okay. Stephanie coughs, and her chest feels like it has a million bricks weighing on her. “Huh?” she mumbles, slowly getting back up to her feet. She’s getting too old for this, she can feel each bone crack and groan in retaliation. Dick had the right idea when he handed the costume over to her.
The pain finally hits her. On her chest, conveniently where she felt pressure, was a large gash. She’s unable to see the blood trickling from her hair line, but Steph can feel it. It stalls at her mask, thankfully. Of course she doesn’t have any first aid items on hand.
“So I am,” she responds, tone calm. “Come on Robin. Let’s-let’s get back to the cave before Batman kills me.”
