Bernie Sanders’ ‘Medicare for All’ Bill Gains Traction in Senate

Former presidential candidate and current senator Bernie Sanders has proposed a “Medicare for All” Bill that has gained the support of sixteen Democratic Senators or one in three senators overall. The senators are as follows: Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey of Massachusetts, Mazie Hirono and Brian Schattz of Hawaii, Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Al Franken of Minnesota, Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire.

Senator Sanders wrote in an op-ed for The New York Times explaining his motivation for putting the bill together which echoed statements he made on the campaign trail during the Democratic Primary.

“We remain the only major country on Earth that allows chief executives and stockholders in the healthcare industry to get incredibly rich, while tens of millions of people suffer because they can’t get the healthcare they need,” he wrote. “This is not what The United States should be about.”

The bill that Senator Sanders is proposing is for a single-payer plan which means that the government will be the “single payer” on any health expenses. The current U.S. healthcare system utilizes a wide variety of payers ranging from the federal government, to the states, to private insurance companies which would be phased out by this bill. The plan would also greatly expand the types of coverage offered to the likes of dental and vision care which aren’t covered by the current medicare system or most private insurance companies. It would also eliminate copays, deductibles, and premiums. This would be implemented gradually over the course of four years where the first year, the eligibility age for Medicare would be lowered to 55, then 45 the following year, 35 the third year, and everyone by the final year. The funding for this plan would come from a wide variety of new taxes, most of which would be on the wealthiest Americans and corporations.

With Republicans currently in a majority control of the Senate, Sanders’ Bill has no hope of passing, but the Senator knew this going in. As Scott Detrow wrote in a piece for NPR Politics, “The whole thing is more about political framing — getting Democrats to the point where this would be a top priority whenever the party is back in power.”
