Getting creative to help the homeless (AP) After three years on the streets, Tiecha Vannoy and her boyfriend Chris Foss plan to weather the pandemic this winter in a small white “pod” with electricity, heat and enough room for two. Portland this month assembled neat rows of the shelters, which resemble garden sheds, in three ad-hoc “villages”—part of an unprecedented effort unfolding in cold-weather cities nationwide to keep people without permanent homes safe as temperatures drop and coronavirus cases surge. “We just get to stay in our little place. We don’t have to leave here unless we want to,” said Vannoy, wiping away tears as they moved into the shelter near a downtown train station. “It’s been a long time coming. He always tells me to have faith, but I was just over it.” ... “Those (are) folks who would under normal circumstances maybe come into a drop-in center to warm up, or go into the subway to warm up, or go into a McDonald’s to warm up—and just not having those options available to them. Raise your mittens: Outdoor learning continues into winter (AP) Cindy Soule’s fourth graders in Maine’s largest city have studied pollination in a community garden. They solved an erosion problem that was damaging trees. They learned about bear scat. Then came a fresh layer of snow and temperatures that hovered around freezing—but her students were unfazed. Bundled up and masked, they scooted outside with their belongings in buckets. They collected their pencils and clipboards, plopped the buckets upside down in the snow, took a seat and went to work. The lesson? Snow, of course, and how snowflakes are formed. Schools nationwide scrambled to get students outdoors during the pandemic to keep them safe and stop the spread of COVID-19. Now, with temperatures plummeting, a smaller number of schools—even in some of the nation’s most frigid climes—plan to keep it going all winter long, with students trading desks in warm classrooms for tree stumps or buckets.

Explosion in Nashville that damaged 20 buildings, injured 3 people an ‘intentional act’ (USA Today) Authorities believe an explosion that occurred in downtown Nashville early Christmas morning and was felt for miles was an “intentional act” sparked by a vehicle. Police responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked outside the AT&T building just before 6 a.m. Upon arrival, police said an officer “had reason” to alert the department’s hazardous devices unit, which was en route, when a “significant explosion” happened. Three people were hospitalized with injuries, police said. At least 20 buildings were damaged, Nashville Mayor John Cooper said. The sound of the explosion could be heard from miles away, and people reported windows shaking from South and East Nashville. “It looks like a bomb went off,” Cooper said. The downtown area will be “sealed off” for further investigation and to make sure everything is “completely safe.”

US to require negative COVID-19 test from UK travelers (AP) The United States will require airline passengers from Britain to get a negative COVID-19 test before their flight, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced late Thursday. The U.S. is the latest country to announce new travel restrictions because of a new variant of the coronavirus that is spreading in Britain and elsewhere. Airline passengers from the United Kingdom will need to get negative COVID-19 tests within three days of their trip and provide the results to the airline, the CDC said in a statement. The agency said the order will be signed Friday and go into effect on Monday. “If a passenger chooses not to take a test, the airline must deny boarding to the passenger,” the CDC said in its statement. The agency said because of travel restrictions in place since March, air travel to the U.S. from the U.K. is already down by 90%.

And let me assure you of my thoughts and prayers.” “Remarkably, a year that has necessarily kept people apart has in many ways brought us closer,” said the queen, adding the royals had been inspired by stories of those who volunteered to help others in need. “In the United Kingdom and around the world, people have risen magnificently to the challenges of the year and I’m so proud and moved by this quiet indomitable spirit.”

For the European Union, It’s a Pretty Good Deal (NYT) The European Union emerges from fraught negotiations with Britain over its exit from the bloc with a sense of satisfaction—that it has maintained its unity and its core principles, especially the integrity of the single market of now 450 million consumers that is the foundation of its influence. And it is now looking ahead to its life without Britain. The final deal is a free-trade agreement that recognizes Britain’s desire to leave the single market and the customs union while preserving tariff-free, quota-free trade in goods with the European Union. To that end, Britain agreed to a mechanism, with arbitration and possible tariffs for violations, that would keep its regulations and subsidies roughly in line with those of Brussels, to prevent unfair competition. But the deal will require inspections of goods to prevent smuggling. The deal also covers many mundane but crucial matters of visas, health insurance, and air, rail and road travel. It treats Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, as within the E.U. customs area to prevent the need for a hard border on the island, but requires some checks on goods going from Britain to Northern Ireland. And the deal reallocates fishing areas and quotas, given that Britain is now an independent coastal state.

Turkey debates law that would increase oversight of NGOs (Reuters) Turkey’s parliament began debating a draft law on Friday that would increase oversight of non-governmental organisations and which, according to rights campaigners, risks limiting the freedoms of civil-society groups. The government says the measure, covering “foundations and associations”, aims to prevent non-profit organisations from financing terrorism and to punish those who violate the law. Civil-society groups, including Amnesty International and the Human Rights Association, said terrorism charges in Turkey were arbitrary, and that the draft law would violate the presumption of innocence and punish those whose trials were not finalised.Investigations based on terrorism charges have been launched against hundreds of thousands of people under a crackdown following a failed coup in 2016. Hundreds of foundations were also shut down with decrees following the coup attempt.

Half of Russians sceptical Kremlin critic Navalny was poisoned (Reuters) Half of Russians believe that Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny was either not poisoned, as he and Western governments contend, or that his poisoning was stage-managed by Western intelligence services, a poll showed on Thursday. The poll, released by the Levada-Center, shows how hard it remains for Navalny to shape public opinion in Russia even as his case attracts wide media attention in the West and his own slickly-produced videos of what happened to him this summer rack up millions of views online. Navalny, one of President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken critics, was airlifted to Germany for medical treatment in August after collapsing on a plane in Russia. Germany has said he was poisoned with a Soviet-style Novichok nerve agent in an attempt to murder him, an assertion many Western nations accept. The poll by Levada, which is regarded as more independent than state counterparts, showed only 15% of Russians believed what happened to Navalny was an attempt by the authorities to rid themselves of a political opponent. By contrast, 30% thought that the incident was stage-managed and that there was no poisoning, and 19% said they believed it was a provocation orchestrated by Western intelligence services.

Hong Kong street refrigerator keeps giving (AP) Most people who head to Woosung Street in Hong Kong’s old-school neighborhood of Jordan are visiting its popular restaurants serving everything from curries to seafood. Others may be headed for a lone refrigerator, painted blue, with a sign that reads: “Give what you can give, take what you need to take.” The door of the fridge sitting outside a hockey academy opens to reveal it is stuffed with packets of instant noodles, biscuits, tins of food and even socks and towels for anyone who may need them. Ahmen Khan, founder of a sports foundation on the same street, said he was inspired to create a community refrigerator after seeing a film about others doing the same thing. He found the refrigerator at a nearby refuse collection point and painted it blue. “It’s like a dignity, that when you go home, you open your fridge to get food,” Khan said. “So I want the people to just feel like that. Even if it’s a street, it’s their community, it’s their home, so they can simply just open it and then just put food there, and collect the food.” Khan’s blue refrigerator project went viral on social media and people have been dropping by to leave food inside.

Israeli jets fly over Beirut, explosions reported in Syria (AP) Israeli jets flew very low over parts of Lebanon early Friday, terrifying residents on Christmas Eve, some of whom reported seeing missiles in the skies over Beirut. Minutes later, Syria’s official news agency reported explosions in the central Syrian town of Masyaf. Other Syrian media said Syrian air defenses responded to an Israeli attack near the town in the Hama province. The Syrian Ministry of Defense issued a statement saying Israel “launched an aggression by directing a barrage of rockets” from the north of the Lebanese city of Tripoli towards the Masyaf area. Israeli jets regularly violate Lebanese airspace and have often struck inside Syria from Lebanese territory. But the Christmas Eve flights were louder than usual, frightening residents of Beirut who have endured multiple crises in the past year, including the catastrophic Aug. 4 explosion at the city’s port that killed over 200 people and destroyed parts of the capital.

George Benson

George Benson (born March 22, 1943) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He began his professional career at the age of 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.

A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing, and scat singing. His album Breezin' was certified triple-platinum, hitting no. 1 on the Billboard album chart in 1976. His concerts were well attended through the 1980s, and he still has a large following. Benson has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Biography

Early career

Benson was born and raised in the Hill District in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the age of seven, he first played the ukulele in a corner drug store, for which he was paid a few dollars. At the age of eight, he played guitar in an unlicensed nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights, but the police soon closed the club down. At the age of 9, he started to record. Out of the four sides he cut, two were released: "She Makes Me Mad" backed with "It Should Have Been Me", with RCA-Victor in New York; although one source indicates this record was released under the name "Little Georgie", the 45rpm label is printed with the name George Benson. The single was produced by Leroy Kirkland for RCA's rhythm and blues label, Groove Records. As he has stated in an interview, Benson's introduction to showbusiness had an effect on his schooling. When this was discovered (tied with the failure of his single) his guitar was impounded. Luckily, after he spent time in a juvenile detention centre his stepfather made him a new guitar.

Benson attended and graduated from Schenley High School. As a youth he learned how to play straight-ahead instrumental jazz during a relationship performing for several years with organist Jack McDuff. One of his many early guitar heroes was country-jazz guitarist Hank Garland. At the age of 21, he recorded his first album as leader, The New Boss Guitar, featuring McDuff. Benson's next recording was It's Uptown with the George Benson Quartet, including Lonnie Smith on organ and Ronnie Cuber on baritone saxophone. Benson followed it up with The George Benson Cookbook, also with Lonnie Smith and Ronnie Cuber on baritone and drummer Marion Booker. Miles Davis employed Benson in the mid-1960s, featuring his guitar on "Paraphernalia" on his 1968 Columbia release, Miles in the Sky before going to Verve Records.

Benson then signed with Creed Taylor's jazz label CTI Records, where he recorded several albums, with jazz heavyweights guesting, to some success, mainly in the jazz field. His 1974 release, Bad Benson, climbed to the top spot in the Billboard jazz chart, while the follow-ups, Good King Bad (#51 Pop album) and Benson and Farrell (with Joe Farrell), both reached the jazz top-three sellers. Benson also did a version of The Beatles's 1969 album Abbey Road called The Other Side of Abbey Road, also released in 1969, and a version of "White Rabbit", originally written and recorded by San Francisco rock group Great Society, and made famous by Jefferson Airplane. Benson played on numerous sessions for other CTI artists during this time, including Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine, notably on the latter's acclaimed album Sugar.

1970s and 1980s

By the mid-to-late 1970s, as he recorded for Warner Bros. Records, a whole new audience began to discover Benson. With the 1976 release Breezin', Benson sang a lead vocal on the track "This Masquerade" (notable also for the lush, romantic piano intro and solo by Jorge Dalto), which became a huge pop hit and won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. (He had sung vocals infrequently on albums earlier in his career, notably his rendition of "Here Comes the Sun" on the Other Side of Abbey Road album.) The rest of the album is instrumental, including his rendition of the 1975 Jose Feliciano composition "Affirmation".

In 1976, Benson toured with soul singer Minnie Riperton, who had been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer earlier that year and, in addition, appeared as a guitarist and backup vocalist on Stevie Wonder's song "Another Star" from Wonder's album Songs in the Key of Life.

During the same year, 1976, the top selling album 'Breezin' was released on the Warner Brothers label featuring the Bobby Womack penned title track and the Leon Russell penned This Masquerade which is now a jazz standard. Both tracks won Grammy awards that year and the LP put Benson into the musical limelight both in the USA and in Europe. Ironically, Benson had been discouraged up until this time, from using his singing skills, mainly as the company decision makers felt he wasn't competent enough vocally, and he should stick to playing the guitar. It was here that he clearly proved them wrong.

He also recorded the original version of "The Greatest Love of All" for the 1977 Muhammad Ali bio-pic, The Greatest, which was later covered by Whitney Houston as "Greatest Love of All". During this time Benson recorded with the German conductor Claus Ogerman. The live take of "On Broadway", recorded a few months later from the 1978 release Weekend in L.A., also won a Grammy. He has worked with Freddie Hubbard on a number of his albums throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The Qwest record label (a subsidiary of Warner Bros., run by Quincy Jones) released Benson's breakthrough pop album Give Me The Night, produced by Jones. Benson made it into the pop and R&B top ten with the song "Give Me the Night" (written by former Heatwave keyboardist Rod Temperton). He had many hit singles such as "Love All the Hurt Away", "Turn Your Love Around", "Inside Love", "Lady Love Me", "20/20", "Shiver", "Kisses in the Moonlight". More importantly, Quincy Jones encouraged Benson to search his roots for further vocal inspiration, and he rediscovered his love for Nat Cole, Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway in the process, influencing a string of further vocal albums into the 1990s. Despite returning to his jazz and guitar playing most recently, this theme was reflected again much later in Benson's 2000 release Absolute Benson, featuring a cover of one of Hathaway's most notable songs, "The Ghetto". Benson accumulated three other platinum LPs and two gold albums.

1990s to present

In 1990, Benson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from the Berklee College of Music.

To commemorate the long relationship between Benson and Ibanez and to celebrate 30 years of collaboration on the GB Signature Models, Ibanez created the GB30TH, a limited-edition model with a gold-foil finish inspired by the traditional Japanese Garahaku art form. In 2009, Benson was recognized by the National Endowment of the Arts as a Jazz Master, the nation's highest honor in jazz. Benson performed at the 49th issue of the Ohrid Summer Festival in North Macedonia on July 25, 2009, and his tribute show to Nat King Cole An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole as part of the Istanbul International Jazz Festival in Turkey on July 27. In the fall of 2009, Benson finished recording an album entitled Songs and Stories with Marcus Miller, producer John Burk, and session musicians David Paich and Steve Lukather. As a part of the promotion for his album Songs and Stories, Benson has appeared or performed on The Tavis Smiley Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

He performed at the Java Jazz Festival March 4–6, 2011. In 2011, Benson released the album Guitar Man, revisiting his 1960s/early-1970s guitar-playing roots with a 12-song collection of covers of both jazz and pop standards produced by John Burk.

In June 2013, Benson released his fourth album for Concord, Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole, which included Wynton Marsalis, Idina Menzel, Till Brönner, and Judith Hill. In September, he returned to perform at Rock in Rio festival, in Rio de Janeiro, 35 years after his first performance at this festival, which was then the inaugural one.

In July 2016, Benson participated as a mentor in the Sky Arts program Guitar Star in the search for the UK and Republic of Ireland's most talented guitarist.

In May 2018, Benson was featured on the Gorillaz single "Humility".

On July 12, 2018, it was announced that Benson had signed to Mascot Label Group.

On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed George Benson among hundreds of musicians whose material was destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.

Personal life

Benson has been married to Johnnie Lee since 1965 and has seven children. Benson describes his music as focusing more on love and romance, and eschewing overt sexuality, due to his commitment to his family and religious practices, with Benson serving as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Benson has been a resident of Englewood, New Jersey.

There was no rest for the weary music writers of the world this week, as it was another heaping offering of new music from all directions. The latest recommended listen album came by way of Potty Mouth, who’ve finally returned after six long years to deliver their sophomore shock to the system SNAFU. Nobody probably would have predicted that the National would be back so soon with their latest effort, however, offering a peak into its soul with its first single. Chatter on Charli Bliss’ highly anticipated new album continued, as did that of Field Medic in spite of his disenchantment, and a self-immolating American Pleasure Club. Meanwhile, a brilliant single from Channel Tres and a new one from Gemma played it cool.

Here’s the best of the rest from the week of March 3rd, 2019…

Fontaines D.C. - “Roy’s Tune” [Partisan Records]

Punks out of Ireland always seem to hold their native land with both an adoring reverence and bitter disdain, with the first half realized out of a love of its people and the potential for its culture to be something so much bigger, and the second being the downsides of when those in power do very little to support either in minding their priorities onto government wealth and shotty politics. Dublin’s Fontaines D.C. are the latest to lend their voices to the plight of rock music as a savior from the country’s ills, and with “Roy’s Tune”, the latest listen from the rising band’s forthcoming debut Dogrel, due out on May 12th, they continue onward in surveying its bleak scene set on lead single “Big” with a melancholic, grey sky drift of guitars moving further in. “I like the way they treat me but I hate the way they use her / I hate the way they use her,” solemnly sings frontman Grian Chatten. Its video, directed by Liam Papadachi, stars Dafhyd Flynn (Michael Inside) in a slice of life portrait of that daily struggle, good and bad. Fontaines D.C. will no doubt be continuing to build buzz on the road in the coming week at this year’s SXSW, and embark on a U.S. tour with fellow isle post-punks Idles later this spring.

The Get Up Kids - “Satellite” [Polyvinyl Records]

Darling emo veterans the Get Up Kids found a fitting home last year when they signed to Polyvinyl Records and put out Kicker, their first new music since the 7 year stretch of silence between 2011′s post-reunion comeback There Are Rules and the now. Fortunately for longtime listeners, Kicker had more in common with the band’s early batch of punchy, fervent guitar punk than the proggy experimental departures of that album, and there’s going to be more of that on the horizon when they release their sixth studio effort Problems on May 10th. What’s been a tale of the best of both worlds with the Get Up Kids’ music these days is how they’ve rediscovered how to faithfully bring their signature sound into the present using their grown-up lens, as is the case with the album’s lead single “Satellite”. It’s a song about feeling isolated and anxious within a crowd, which frontman Matt Pryor pulled inspiration from in his own stage habits and observing those of his contently introverted 14-year-old son. In its video directed by Kerstin Ebert, we watch a cute cardboard creature contend with just that in the big city noise of their daily life.

Greys - “These Things Happen” [Carpark Records]

Is there something in the water, or does it sounding like the spirit of the‘60s and ‘70s is bleeding its way back into today’s modern punk and indie rock landscape? Bands like Culture Abuse and Angel Du$t have trimmed down their hardcore weight in favor of breezy flower punk, and further down this read, there’s more evidence of tie dyed fashion coming back into style by way of Ezra Koenig’s design. Toronto’s Greys have gradually chiseled away at the gravely post-hardcore the burst onto the scene, and with 2016′s two-fer Outer Heaven and Warm Shadow, they turned their amplifications toward an experimental dreamy gaze further out into the atmosphere. Age Hasn’t Spoiled You, their third proper full-length set for release May 10th, could see them returning to the earth, but not in the way you might anticipate. Its first singles “These Things Happen” simmers in a radiation of psychedelic feedback and harmonious comedowns as frontman Shehzaad Jiwan searches for footing amidst the confusion of our current political climate. “Look at the road behind you / See how far you’ve come from home,” he sings, not necessarily as a fete, but in perspective of how lost we’ve gotten.

Age Hasn't Spoiled You by Greys

Laura Stevenson - “Value Inn” [Don Giovanni Records]

At month’s end, punk songwriter Laura Stevenson will release her fifth studio effort The Big Freeze, an album that while recorded in between the familiar space of her childhood home, feels both vast in its exploration of space and vulnerability compared to all of her work preceding it. She tore the walls right down with a bout of long distance pining on its first single “Living Room, NY”, and on her latest preview “Value Inn”, Stevenson again delivers an emotional wrecking ball into her surrounding interiors. Though this time, it’s not much about seeking comfort in the arms of another as it is an escape from the outside world altogether. ”The song is about going somewhere deliberately to disappear and to harm yourself. And in that isolated place, the loneliness is so extreme that the world feels completely empty, and you are the only one who can pull yourself back out,” she elaborates. Recently, Stevenson wrote a piece for the Talkhouse on her battle with dermatillomania that adds even further context to the listen, further devastated by acoustic reverb and her pierced words. The Big Freeze will without a doubt be Stevenson’s career-defining moment because of this honesty.

Mary Lattimore & Mac McCaughan - “I” [Three Lobed Records]

In the spring of 2017, Los Angeles multi-instrumentalist Mary Lattimore and Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan turned to an improvised experimental collaboration to rediscover their version of beauty in a world on fire on the heels of a traumatic 2016. The finished result, New Rain Duets, will see the light of day for the rest of us who need it on March 22nd. We’ve already heard the warmly buzzing sprawl of “III”, one of four instrumental compositions that make up the listen, and now the pair have shared the album’s opening part “I”. This one nearly doubles in length at 11-minutes long as it hesitantly tip-toes its way out of the dark by way of Lattimore’s harpsichord ornation before McCaughan illuminates the path her arpeggios dance with sprightly synthesizers. Let this be your reminder to move your clocks forward this weekend for an extra hour of daylight...

Pile - “Bruxist Grin” [Exploding In Sound Records]

With bands like Kal Marks and Krill no longer with us (or are they?) and Speedy Ortiz splintered across the northeast, it would seem that Pile are the last band standing from Boston’s DIY scene of the early decade, and for good reason at that. The big-riffed shredding of their early work that never ceased to get compared to ‘90s indie veterans amplified has steadily meticulated itself into its own rock formation over the years, especially as lead singer Rick Maguire does his own aging process justice in his songwriting. That Converge brought them out on tour in support of 2017′s The Dusk In Us is all the seal of approval you need to know that they’re their hometown’s modern day heroes in guitar-slinging. On May 5th, they’ll return with their 7th full-length effort Green and Gray, and its anxiety-filled first listen “Bruxist Grin” makes the most out of Maguire’s twisted up emotions. Guitars cranking and cymbals stomping overhead target a panic attack straight toward his chest, and that there’s a cohesive formation in this imminent chaos is what puts his mind on the defense.

Vampire Weekend feat. Steve Lacy - “Sunflower” [Columbia Records]

The details behind the long-awaited new album from Vampire Weekend are making themselves known little by little, as we now know that their fourth studio effort entitled Father of the Bride will be released May 5th. Its official cover art is also a departure from the granular Insta-portrait aesthetic of its predecessors, and shares more in common with patchouli-minded Paint design you'd have found if you wandered into a Dancing Bear store circa ‘96. The former sees the Internet’s guitar guru Steve Lacy joining Ezra Koenig and company for a brief, but far out journey that leans into free form jazz and psychedelic spheres tripped on in ‘70s FM waves, but without getting lost in the haze. But who knows -- Maybe all the scat-bat-doo-bopping will get a 15-minute-long extended jam once Vampire Weekend begin their summer tour...

It was destined to be; Layla Nola: a Dominant. So it came as quite the surprise when she was tested as submissive instead. The family on her father’s side came from a long line of fine and well-respected Dominants, so to receive news of their daughter’s designation wasn’t expected. Even her mother, a traditionally submissive woman, held high hopes for her daughter to be branded with a proud D across her inner wrist, to be another strong Dominant in their family, much like Layla’s father.

Growing up with a strict father was bad, but growing up with a strict, militant, Dominant father just happened to be worse. Layla’s mother was always the caring and compassionate woman she needed, but once her Dominant husband made a suggestion, even against her will, Layla’s mother agreed with him. Disappointed, her father decided to give up on Layla, leaving her mother to home school the girl while her father remained distant from his daughter. Once the teenage years hit, Layla started to rebel, and quite frequently as she couldn’t handle her home life.

Who would have known a random summer night would be the night to forever change Layla’s life? It was supposed to be a simple end-of-the-summer-road trip with a couple of her submissive friends and a Dominant boy she’d grown up with; whom came home every summer from boarding school. It turned into something far more serious, for at sixteen years old Layla discovered the solution to all her problems; alcohol and its ability to provide temporary comfort. Her friends (and of course Layla) had far too much to drink that night and in their inebriated mindset thought it would be a wise idea to go and drive a vehicle as well. The night went by in flash, bits and pieces filled with hazy recollection of tires screeching and terrified screams; which she blocked out until later when she thought about that night years after. The image of a lifeless body on the asphalt; left there to slowly die, haunted her. Layla faced prison time for the crime of second degree vehicular manslaughter as she was a passenger in her Dominant friend’s car.

The trial was a week away and sixteen year old Layla was terrified. As her family distanced themselves from her after the hit and run, she was kept in a government-run correctional facility for teenagers. It was there she felt she was doomed to spend her life behind bars. Then, out of the blue, an opportunity presented itself. Some would call him an angel but Layla knew better than that. A man, the not angel, did save her from her prison sentence. How did this come about, you ask? Well it’s actually quite simple. Layla received a mysterious phone call from an older wealthy, well-connected, gentleman who promised her an escape: one that didn’t come free. She must agree to be his sex slave, doing any depraved act he wished with no questions asked and he promised to help her out. It was a tough decision but knowing the circumstances that came from life in prison, Layla wasn’t going to take any chances. She attempted to reach out to her parents one final time, leaving a message on their answering machine though they never called back. The old man finessed his way through the criminal system and had her in his possession, as his claim, within a matter of a week.

It was a good ten months in before Layla decided enough was enough. She escaped her Master, as she not-so-affectionately referred to him, and turned herself into the system for violating her claim. The government, as the older man wanted nothing to do with her, tried to decide on a punishment; as in Ireland they didn’t take kindly to those whom break their vows - especially when it wasn’t a secret the young teen was only helped to be the old man’s play thing. Upon further investigation of the hit and run case, they uncovered tampered evidence which helped release her from the initial prison sentence. She was thrown into prison (for the original crime of second degree manslaughter), her submissive status was revoked, and she was branded a void.

When Layla was released from prison after her twenty-second birthday she was assigned to work at the same government-run correctional institution she spent a week in when she was sixteen. It was there a visitor took notice of Layla. Somewhat intrigued by the young void, she learned Layla’s story and took immediate pity. The woman, a Canadian diplomat, felt someone with Layla’s situation could benefit from the rehabilitation program her country proudly offered.

Paperwork and hearings were held, the woman represented Layla on her behalf, and two long years later the young void was placed on a plane and flown to Toronto; where she was assigned to work in the kitchens at a prestigious academy: Cavendish.

If you were to ask sixteen year old Layla if she pictured herself living in Canada, you could guarantee she’d have answered no; but she does not regret a single moment of what happened in her life. It only made her stronger and appreciative that she now lived in a country that might give her a second chance at life.

Layla had finally managed to look into the rehabilitation program at the academy. After attending classes and studying, she was finally able to be scheduled in a matter of months to be taking the sorting test again. To say she was nervous was a bit of an understatement, and there were times she looked in her bedroom mirror and decided to say screw it all. Being a void was much easier, you could remain in shadows, no one hardly knew who you were and it was something Layla had became use to. But deep down inside the Irish lassie knew her life was meant to be lived as a submissive.

Of course she passed the test and returned back to the academy but not to return in the same corridors she once slept in, not to wake up early in the mornings, well she still had to awake early in the morning but this time it wasn’t to attend a working schedule. Eventually summer had came and Layla managed to make it through her first time not only being a submissive but a student as well, she managed to go back to Ireland and reconnect with her parents. Overall, things in Layla’s life were finally looking up. Now, before if you were to ask if she were to be voided she obviously would have answered no, but if you were to ask her seeing her life as a submissive again? She probably wouldn’t have much faith in that answer, but she did it and there’s no regrets with her life now as she moves forward to a better future.

George Benson

George Benson (born March 22, 1943) is an American musician, guitarist and singer-songwriter. He began his professional career at 21 as a jazz guitarist. Benson uses a rest-stroke picking technique similar to that of gypsy jazz players such as Django Reinhardt.

A former child prodigy, Benson first came to prominence in the 1960s, playing soul jazz with Jack McDuff and others. He then launched a successful solo career, alternating between jazz, pop, R&B singing, and scat singing. His album Breezin' was certified triple-platinum, hitting no. 1 on the Billboard album chart in 1976. His concerts were well attended through the 1980s, and he still has a large following. He has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Biography

Early career

1970s and 1980s

By the mid- to late-1970s, as he recorded for Warner Bros. Records, a whole new audience began to discover Benson. With the 1976 release Breezin', Benson sang a lead vocal on the track "This Masquerade", which became a huge pop hit and won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year. (He had sung vocals infrequently on albums earlier in his career, notably his rendition of "Here Comes the Sun" on the Other Side of Abbey Road album.) The rest of the album is instrumental, including his rendition of the 1975 Jose Feliciano composition "Affirmation".

In 1976, Benson toured with soul singer Minnie Riperton, who had been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer earlier that year. Also in 1976, George Benson appeared as a guitarist and backup vocalist on Stevie Wonder's song "Another Star" from Wonder's album Songs in the Key of Life. He also recorded the original version of "The Greatest Love of All" for the 1977 Muhammad Ali bio-pic, The Greatest, which was later covered by Whitney Houston as "Greatest Love of All". During this time Benson recorded with the German conductor Claus Ogerman. The live take of "On Broadway", recorded a few months later from the 1978 release Weekend in L.A., also won a Grammy. He has worked with Freddie Hubbard on a number of his albums throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The Qwest record label (a subsidiary of Warner Bros., run by Quincy Jones) released Benson's breakthrough pop album Give Me The Night, produced by Jones. Benson made it into the pop and R&B top ten with the song "Give Me the Night" (written by former Heatwave keyboardist Rod Temperton). He got many hit singles such as "Love All the Hurt Away", "Turn Your Love Around", "Inside Love", "Lady Love Me", "20/20", "Shiver", "Kisses in the Moonlight". More importantly, Quincy Jones encouraged Benson to search his roots for further vocal inspiration, and he re-discovered his love for Nat Cole, Ray Charles and Donny Hathaway in the process, influencing a string of further vocal albums into the 1990s. Despite returning to his jazz and guitar playing most recently, this theme was reflected again much later in Benson's 2000 release Absolute Benson, featuring a cover of one of Hathaway's most notable songs, "The Ghetto". Benson accumulated three other platinum LPs and two gold albums.

1990s to present

In 1985, Benson and guitarist Chet Atkins went on the smooth jazz charts with their collaboration "Sunrise", one of two songs from the duo released on Atkins' Stay Tuned album. In 1992, Benson appeared on Jack McDuff's Colour Me Blue album, his first appearance on a Concord album. Benson signed with Concord Records in 2005 and toured with Al Jarreau in America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand to promote their 2006 multiple Grammy-winning album Givin' It Up.

To commemorate the long-term relationship between Benson and Ibanez and to celebrate 30 years of collaboration on the GB Signature Models, Ibanez created the GB30TH, a very limited-edition model featuring a gold-foil finish inspired by the traditional Japanese Garahaku art form. In 2009, Benson was recognized by the National Endowment of the Arts as a Jazz Master, the nation's highest honor in jazz. Benson performed at the 49th issue of the Ohrid Summer Festival in Macedonia on July 25, 2009, and his tribute show to Nat King Cole An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole as part of the Istanbul International Jazz Festival in Turkey on July 27. In the fall of 2009, Benson finished recording a new album entitled Songs and Stories, with Marcus Miller, producer John Burk, and session musicians David Paich and Steve Lukather. As a part of the promotion for his recent Concord Music Group/Monster Music release Songs and Stories, Benson has appeared and/or performed on The Tavis Smiley Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Benson toured throughout 2010 in North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim, including an appearance at the Singapore Sun Festival. He performed at the Java Jazz Festival March 4–6, 2011. In 2011, Benson released the album Guitar Man—revisiting his 1960s/early-1970s guitar-playing roots with a 12-song collection of covers of both jazz and pop standards overseen by producer John Burk.

In June 2013, Benson released his fourth album for Concord Records, Inspiration: A Tribute to Nat King Cole, which featured Wynton Marsalis, Idina Menzel, Till Brönner, and Judith Hill.
