having grown up in toronto , canada , sawyer had to travel halfway across the continent to reach the artificial island off the coast of florida that houses the school for the odd . although he isn't used to the warm climate , his oddity allows him to stay cool ; he can shoot ice-cold gusts of wind from his palms , perfect for cooling himself down ( or propelling him forward on a skateboard ) . even without it , he'll likely adapt ; he's as flexible as he is hyperactive , although his albinism makes expending his energy in the sun more dangerous than he or his parents would like . his parents were eager to send him away to the school . they've got a few pictures they need to get rid of ...

bayou and her older brother , kaipo , grew up in hawai'i , so they had their own trek to make to reach the school for the odd . kaipo had been signed up since day one ; his parents didn't trust that he'd have the smarts to be head of the house when they passed , so they planned to keep bayou home to teach her the trade secrets of the family business instead . bayou hitched a ride with kaipo , however , and while she doesn't quite trust this school , she's eager to meet people whose powers seem as strange as her and her brother .
