The Perseids Back in August I made a trip to the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho with the goal to photograph the Perseid Meteor shower. I made the trip with @thejarvie and @brandyleephotodesign and met up with @erictheastrojunkie and a few others while we were there. I had 3 cameras going in different directions and compositions throughout the night, though there were large gaps from times when my batteries died and I fell asleep. This photo is the result of just one of those cameras. It spans from 11:43 PM until 4:30 AM, with about an hour and 15 minutes missing. It took 580 photos and I had about 80 frames with at least one shooting star, and some with two or three. The Perseid meteor shower is my favorite shower (besides my morning shower of course) of the year, simply because it produces the most meteors. It's also the perfect time of year where you can camp out under the stars and watch them. Much of the (north)west is receiving its first snow of the season this weekend. Many people are flipping out about an early winter. Perhaps in Montana (4+ feet!), but I'm speaking about the Washington Cascades, primarily. In my scant two years here, this has happened both years. In fact, this first snow is about a week to a week and a half later than last year. "We just skipped fall and went right to winter." No. This seems to happen most every year. It's still unforseen whether this will all melt (like last year, October was bone dry) or if snow storms will continue. ° "But the Farmer's Alamanac says..." Malarkey. The Farmer's Alamanac is ambiguous, at best. Sure, a guide for what might come is great, but the use of phrasing like "cold, wet winter" is nowhere near prescriptive and isn't even descriptive. ° These impulse reactions and blind propogation are some of the things that bother me most about people. Grace remarked on the smell of the foliage as we sauntered through this alpine meadow. The flowers and trees, past their flowering prime for the year, still emitted numerous, strong and pleasurable, smells. ° I believe that smell is an often underrated aspect of nature. We're assaulted by strong odors in our lives. From chemical releases due to enhanced cooking methods (e.g. microwaves) to the addition of addictive compounds to pull us in and the prolific use of air "freshners"; they're everywhere. Seldom are we without smells. However, much of my time in nature is without discernible outdoors. This is part of why fresh air seems so fresh...it is literally more parts air than what we typically inhale. We grow momentarily used to that and when we encounter plants off gassing their odors, we take greater notice. There are time that I pass through certain trees that I feel as though I can sense, through scent, thicker air. The air may or may not be more perceptibly dense as a result, either way, some of the air that I breath has been displaced by compounds from the plants in the form of heavier terpenoids (an example) over lighter diatomic molecules (N2, O2). ° Well, that went down a slight rabbit hole I didn't initially intend.
