Fasting And Worshipping Rituals In Sawan Month Somvaars
On a Shravan month Monday, it is always advised to wake up in the Brahma Muhurat. Further, one should take bath and wear clean, fresh clothes. Make sure to arrange all the worshipping items beforehand, so there is no interruption during the Pooja.
The common ingredients a devotee uses during this Pooja are Bel Patra (leaves of Aegle marmelos), Dhatura and raw milk. One can also offer honey, Chandan and different fruits to Lord Shiva. After taking bath, make sure to clean the puja room and start meditating.
Begin with bathing Shiva Linga with milk, honey and water. Then, put some Chandan on his forehead and offer Bel Patra. Further, you can also offer Dhatura, fruits and flowers. Meanwhile, you can also worship Lord Shiva by offering shringar items to his wife, Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva’s Vahana, Nandi also deserves equal worshipping.
The procedure of observing fast is quite simple. You can consume a simple, one-time meal including only fruits and sweets. Abstain from consuming grains, anything salty, non-vegetarian foods and most importantly, alcohol. One can also have sweet items such as sabudana and halwa after the completion of Pooja.
What Happens After Observing Fasts In Sawan Month Mondays?
Lord Shiva is the supreme being of this world that has River Ganga knotted in his hairs. One can always find him wearing tiger skin, holding a three-branched trident in his hands and a snake wrapped around his neck. He also carries damru everywhere he goes.
As it is very easy to please him, devotees also call Lord Shiba “Bhole Baba.” Worshipping and observing fasts on Monday will please him and all your wishes will come true. Devotees fast for several purposes including marriage, seeking relief from diseases and wealth.

Namaste Divine Souls ~ Shravan Somvaar ki bahut saari Shubh kamnaayein.! Monday's of Shravan mass are considered highly auspicious. All Mondays are devoted to the worship of Shiva as this day is sacred to Lord Shiva. No other Mondays of other months are so greatly honoured. Whole month is considered very auspicious to seek blessings of Lord Shiva. Devotees keep various fasts during Shravan/ Sawan month to please Lord Shiva. The main Shravan Puja is the worship of Shivling with Gangajal. According to the Legend, the "Samudra Manthan" or churning of oceans took place in the month of Shravan. During the churning of the ocean , the deadly poison came out, and was consumed by Lord Shiva which he stored in his throat, subsequently turning his throat blue, and hence Shiva is attributed to the name Neelkanth. To reduce the poison's impact, Shiva wore the crescent moon on his head. To lessen the effect of the poison the Gods and Devas started offering the water from holy Ganga to Lord Shiva. Thence forth performing Abhishek on Shivling with gangajal became a ritual. Many Shiva devotees observe strict fast for the whole month of Sawan and many observe only on Mondays. Many people observe different vows during the month like having only vegetarian food, or reading a particular Holy Scripture on all days of the month. Read Shiva Purana in Sawan Month, Wear Rudraksha, offer Gangajal or normal Water to Lord Shiva and feel the energy of Shiva and Shakti in yourself. Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Shivling and the prayer therefore starts with worshipping Shivling and offering it Abhishek with milk, water, curd, ghee, honey or sugar, and Ganga jal. Bilva leaves, flowers and dhub/durva grass is offered to Lord Shiva to please him. In the end, Bhang, Dhatoora, and Shriphal are offered to the lord in the form of prasad. Use Bilva Patra for worshipping Lord Shiva. Lord Brahma in an ancient tale told saints that Lord Shiva is highly pleased with Bela Patra and one Belpatra is considered equal to 1,000 Neelkamal flowers. Chant Om Namah Shivay or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra with Rudraksha Beads. Listen to as many Shiva Stotras and Bhajans and immerse yourself in Shiva love! ✨ Om Namah Shivaya ~ Jai Shiva Shakti. 💦

Neelkanth Shiva
This year I decided to fast on Sawan ke somvaar. Shiva has always fascinated me. As I sat looking at the beautiful monsoon rains, I felt that the rain water was coming from the Ganga who sat in the matted locks of Lord Shiva.
Tumblr media
It is said that Lord Shiva has spoken about the Ramayana in 100 crore shlokas. He is the eternal devotee of Lord Rama. Once the Rishis, Devas and Raakshasas all told Shiva that they wanted to do Ramayana Paath. All three groups were fighting amongst themselves as the best claimant for the Ramayana. They were beseeching Lord Shiva to give the Ramayana to them.
It is said that Shiva is Bhole-Baba. He is a simpleton and hence easy to please. He does not like conflict. So to make everyone happy, Shiva decided to divide the Ramayana into three equal parts. He gave to each group thirty three crores, thirty three lakhs, thirty three thousand, three hundred and thirty three shlokas. In this way, ninety nine crores, ninety nine lakh, ninety nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety nine shlokas were given away. One shloka was left.
Each of the three parties begged Shiva to give this last shloka to them. Shiva again decided to divide this shloka into three equal parts. The shloka had thirty two alphabets. It was in Anushthup Chanda. He gave ten alphabets each to all three parties. But two alphabets were still left.
The battle for the remaining two alphabets became even fiercer than before. Shiva was most displeased at their fighting. So he decided to keep the two alphabets for himself. These were Ra and Ma. Together they make the word ‘Rama’. Shiva kept the word ‘Rama’ in this throat. That is why He was able to drink the poison that came out of the 'Samudra Manthan' and the 'Vish' he consumed turned into 'Amrit'. And Shiva became Neelkanth – The one with the blue throat!
Everyone who comes into this world has to partake of some poison at some time or the other. Someone may say something to you, which may be unpalatable. But you still have to drink it up. This is the poison you have to swallow! Often growing children say things to their aged parents that are not really palatable ... That too tastes like poison! This is common in today’s world.  Right?
So learning from Shiva, let's keep the name of 'Rama' in our throat. Let’s chant the name of the Lord. That will help us to swallow every poison that the world pushes down our gullet. And that too shall turn into nectar!
There is another thing that can be learnt from Shiva’s family. Lord Shiva rides the Nandi Bull. Devi Parvati is Maa Jagdamba. She rides the lion. Really speaking the lion and the bull are arch enemies; but when they sit in the presence of Shiva and Parvati they forget their animosity and behave like friends. Ganesha rides on a mouse, while Lord Shiva wears snakes around this neck. Snakes and mice are also enemies. Snakes can kill and devour mice in a jiffy. Their elder son Kartikeya rides a peacock. The peacock too feeds on snakes and mice. But this does not happen in Shiva’s family. They live in perfect harmony!
In each family people have different kinds of temperaments, skills, interests, habits or ideology. But when they sit together as a family, they should forget their individual interests and be just part of the family. Shiva is worshiped with fervor during the ‘Sawan maas’ – Monsoon month.
I am wondering if you enjoyed reading this. I would love to know what you feel. I would be happy if you could share your thoughts in the comments section below :)
