Shravan 2017: Important Dates, Time & Significance of This Holy Month Dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Shravan Somwar Vrat or Monday fasting during Shravan is kept in honour of Lord Shiva – the God of Destruction and Transformation. One of the principal deities in Hinduism, he is known by several names and avatars. Devotees worship Lord Shiva as the Supreme Being to Mahadeva to Adiyogi Shiva to being within the Hindu trinity along with Brahma and Vishnu. It is widely believed that if Lord Shiva does not discriminate and quickly grants wishes to anyone seeking his blessings with a pure heart. Leading an ascetic life, Shiva or Mahadev is above materialism and easily gets pleased with simple offerings and puja vidhi. Here are simple fasting rules or Shravan Somwar Vrat Vidhi every Lord Shiva devotee must follow while observing the holy fast. Sawan Month 2017: Significance of Shravan Mondays And Interesting Facts on Why People Observe Fast.
We also do Udaka shanti pooja.
Shravan Somwar Vrat Vidhi for Lord Shiva
Shravan Somwar Vrat or Monday fast begins with the worshipper waking up early morning. After taking a holy bath and individuals observing fast should wear white colour. It is highly beneficial if the person can visit Lord Shiva temple in the morning and the evening while keeping Somvar Vrat. In case, visiting the temple is not possible, offer prayers to Mahadev at home.(Udaka shanti pooja)
Begin the puja with Abhishekam, meaning ‘to have bath’. It could be as simple as Jal Abhishek, which is pouring water on the Shiva lingam or Shivling. When Abhishekam is offered to Lord Shiva, it is called Rudra Abhishek. Doing Panchamrut or Panchamrit or Charnamrit Abhishek is also an excellent way to please Mahadeva. Panchamrut is prepared by mixing – Milk, Curd, Ghee (clarified butter), Honey and Sugar. The devotees can put a tilak of sandalwood paste on the Shivalingam and avoid using kumkum tilak (vermillion) for the shivling.
When pouring milk on the shivling as an offering, do make sure that it is not pasteurized or packet milk. Please make sure always to use ice cold milk. Also never offer coconut water to the Shiva Lingam. One may instead offer coconuts as Prasadam or prasad. White flowers are to be offered to Lord Shiva and on Shivaling but do not place champa (Plumeria) and kewda flower as they are said to be cursed by Lord Shiva. Tulsi patta (Basil leaves) must never be placed on Shiva Lingam. Bael leaves, or Bila Patra are believed to be Mahadeva’s favourite, hence always offer it.
In the evening a story related to Somavar Vrat is listened to or read by those observing the fast. There are many stories or Somvar Vrat Katha such as the story of a poor Brahmin gaining wealth due to Somvar Vrat. The second story is of a wealthy merchant begetting a son after long wait, and the subsequent death of the son and his rebirth due to the grace of Lord Shiva and Parvati due to Monday fasting. The third story and the most popular legend involves the game of dice played between Lord Shiva and Parvati.
Five is the sacred number of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva’s body consists of five mantras which are called ‘Panchabramans’. These are – Sadyojata, Vamadeva, Aghora, Tatpurusa and Isana. Devotees should chant Lord Shiva mantras such as – “Om Namah Shivaya”, “Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityormukshiya Mamritat॥“, ”Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahadevaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat॥“, “Om Namo Bhagwate Rudraay”.
Those observing Shravan Somwar Vrat can consume a single meal on the day after midday. Those observing partial Monday fast take fruits or Sabudana Khichadi. It is believed that the devotees should never consume what they have offered to the shivling as it brings bad omen, which may lead to loss of health and wealth.

Sawan Shivaratri 2017 Puja Muhurat
There are 12 Shivaratris in a year. While Maha Shivaratri is the most significant and popular one for the Shiv Bhakts, Sawan Shivaratri which falls during Shravan month considering the month is dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is also believed to be quite important. Swan Shivaratri 2017 date falls on July 21 (Friday). Sawan Shivaratri Puja Muhurat – Nishita Kaal Puja Time = 24:06+ to 24:48+ with duration of 41 minutes. On 22nd, Sawan Shivaratri Parana Time is 05:41 to 15:50. Worshippers will show their relentless devotion towards Lord Shiva by worshipping Shiva Linga with Bael Patra (leaves) flowers, holy water and milk, i.e. Falam-Toyam, Pushpam-Patram.
Significance of Lord Shiva in Shravan Month
We also do Udaka shanti pooja – Lord Shiva is considered to be the ruler of Shravan Month because Mahadev saved the universe by drinking poison which emerged from the Samudra Manthan i.e. churning of the milky ocean. Samudra Manthan, one of the notable events in the Hindu Mythology saw Devtas (Gods), and Asuras (Demons) began churning of the Ocean of Milk for Amrit (Elixir or the heavenly nectar of immortality). 14 ratnas (gems) were produced from the ocean which was equally divided between the two competing sides. But the 14th gem was the poison which could have destroyed the entire universe and all living beings. Lord Shiva consumed the poison to save everyone and such was the impact of it that his neck turned blue and thus he is called Neelkanth. This iconic episode of Samudra Manthan took place during the Shravan Month, making it the month of Lord Shiva.

Happy Sawan Shivratri 2017: The Significance of The Vrat and Foods You Can Have While Fasting
Rudra abhishek pooja – Devotees of Lord Shiva across the country are gearing up to celebrate Sawan Shivaratri on 21st July, 2017. According to the Hindu calendar, there are twelve Shivratris that are celebrated by Hindus every year. The Shivaratri that falls during the Shravana month is known as Sawan Shivaratri while the Shivaratri that falls in the month of February or March which corresponds to the Phalguna month is called the Mahashivratri. Mahashivratri and the Sawan Shivratri are considered to be the most significant festivals for those who follow Lord Shiva.
The entire Shravana month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees observe a fast on every Monday of each week in the Shravana month which is also known as ‘Shravan Somvar’. They worship the Shiva linga and also organise a special Maha Rudrabhishek Puja during this month. Sawan Shivratri marks the union of Shakti and Lord Shiva -the two great forces in the universe. Devotees observe fasts and perform pujas to attain stability and happiness in their lives and ward off evil energies. The festival also holds special significance for women, some of whom observe fasts in a hope to get a husband like Lord Shiva.Rudra abhishek pooja
Ancient Shiva temples like the Kashi Vishwanath and Badrinath arrange special pujas and Shiva Darshan during this month. A large number of Shiva devotees visit Shiva shrines during this pious month and perform Gangajal Abhishek over the Shivalinga early in the morning as a sacred ritual.
Significance of Fasting During Sawan Shivratri
(Udaka shanti pooja)Devotees observe fasts through the month on every Monday when they clean their temples and decorate Lord Shiva’s idol with fresh flowers. Devotees who observe the month-long fasts should have one last meal on Trayodashi, a day before Shivratri, and on the day of Shivratri, after finishing morning rituals, they should fast for the whole day and break the fast the next morning. On the Shivratri day, devotees bathe in the evening before performing Shiva Puja or visiting the temple. Shiv Puja is performed at night with much fervor and enthusiasm till the wee hours of the next day when the fast can be broken.
While observing the fast, devotees are allowed to eat certain foods like fresh fruits, milk and water but they should avoid cereals and grains. Chef Sudhir Nair from Mariott Bengaluru tells us, “You can enjoy delicacies made of potato yam like the Suran ki Sabzi, amaranthgrain, tapioca (sabudana), barnyard millet, singhara (water chestnuts) along with nuts and dry fruits.”
Sabudaana Khichdi and Kuttu-Singahri ki Puri are some popular dishes consumed by devotees during these fasts. You can also try making a sweet thandai with milk and dry fruits. For snacks, try aloo tikki, raw banana vadas, pakodas made with singhara flour or a plain sweet potato chaat with lime but without spices.Udaka shanti pooja

Sawan Shivratri Today: 131 Feet Tricolour Kanwar, Non-Veg Dhabas Shut in Dadri; All You Need to Know
Rudra abhishek pooja-New Delhi, July 21: The month-long Kanwar Yatra, which began on July 10, is turning out to be quite eventful this year. Dressed in orange attire, carrying kanwars on their shoulders, these kanwariyas walk to the Ganges from their states and return home carrying the Ganga water in bottles. This water is used to worship at their local Shiva temples.
Devotees of Lord Shiva will celebrate Sawan Shivaratri on July 21, 2017. The Shivaratri that falls during the Shravana month is known as Sawan Shivaratri while the Shivaratri that falls in the month of February or March which corresponds to the Phalguna month is called the Mahashivratri.Rudra abhishek pooja
Meanwhile, a kanwar from Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district has become a centre of attraction as it also denotes patriotism. It is the Tiranga Kanwar Yatra which consists of 131 feet long national flag. The Tiranga Kanwar will reach Bhuteshwar temple where Kanwariyas will offer the Ganga water to Lord Shiva. It is being said that the Tiranga Kanwar will take at least 12 hours to reach the temple. Around 80 Kanwariyas have brought Kanwar from Haridwar to Saharanpur.
Even though there has been no traffic diversions because of the yatra, the food choices is certainly affected by it. The Uttar Pradesh Police has asked local roadside vendors and restaurant owners in Greater Noida (Dadri) not to serve or prepare non-vegetarian food. The reason is believed to be kanwar yatra as kanwariyas prefer only pure vegetarian food.Udaka shanti pooja
The police has justified the order saying that there has been an increase in number of pilgrims returning from Haridwar to Greater Noida. “We have also removed vendors serving non-vegetarian food. They will be off the road till the religious season of kanwar yatra is on,” Ram Sen Singh, SHO, Dadri police station, told Times of India.
The police even went on inspection of roadside dhabas and asked dhabas serving non-vegetarian particularly to shut down for one week. Shops and dhabas serving egg, fish, chicken and mutton have been shut down.
And two years ago, 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was dragged out of him and killed by a mob of at least 100 in Dadri’s Bisara village over rumours of consuming beef. The move can also be seen as an attempt to avoid any untoward incident.Udaka shanti pooja
Meanwhile, most biryani outlets on Gurgaon-Alwar highway in the Muslim-majority Mewat region have shut down for the kanwar yatra. While some shop owners claim that they have done it voluntarily, some fear that miscreants would try to stoke tension over sale of meat during pilgrimage, the Times of India reported.
