why is it y'all always say what you consume doesn't say anything about you yet if someone enjoys reading what you consider fluffy writing then they're just a dumb worthless idiot for not ~challenging~ themselves

#saw a post so mad just bc someone said reading classics takes longer for them than reading a romance #like...yeah lol classics ARE going to take longer to properly understand them bc the language is way different from what we're used to lol #i just don't understand why people even care and it's always about romance like #okay we're not allowed to criticize how abusive relationships are portrayed in some romance novels bc that's apparently purity culture #but also enjoying love stories is somehow inherently worthless compared to like. any other genre.#also like idk reading should be enjoyable obviously each classic is significant for a reason but #you shouldn't have to prove how intellectual you are by reading the ~right things~
