Emperor of Style I am an Empress by Design due to not only my mom passing down her fashion forward sensibilities but primarily my father. He came from the South, apprenticed as a patternmaker, & currently co-owner of a sample production firm in midtown. He has been in fashion ever since I was a little girl. Tru'ed my patterns & ripped my designs apart while at Parsons School of Design because he wanted me to not take short cuts, just start over & do better. Currently focused on my own creative work, he has been an awesome mentor, informing me to be about my business "Make sure you get half down payment before you start anything." Ultimately, waking me up to the good, the bad, & the ugly nature of the business. The lesson not to give up your goods for free in more ways than one.😂 People are investing in your services - make sure they can put their money where their mouth is. My mission is not only to continue family legacy but to also learn about his story. Thanks Patternmaking Pops for being a Black man about his business & inspiring this black woman do the same thing. Happy Father's Day! Please note the white lady is not my momma. 😂 Stay Fashion Conscious. Move Fashion Forward. #TheEmpressofstyle #WearFashionandconsciousnessunite #fatherdaughter #FathersDay #FamilyofFashion #Melanin #BlackFamily #MadeInNYC #SaveTheGarmentCenter #ParsonsAlumni #Legacy #Fashion #Theater #Film #Father

CALL TO ACTION: SPEAK UP AGAINST REZONING THE HISTORIC AND VITAL GARMENT DISTRICT
written by Steve Epstein (Local 764 Brother)
Since 1987 the Garment Center has been protected by zoning which was designed to protect the fashion industry within the city.   This is an area on which we depend for so many supplies we use in our work.
The city is proposing to lift those zoning protections, along with a plan to offer space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn to those businesses displaced by zoning changes.
The Garment Center - the manufacturers, fabric suppliers, pattern makers, sewing machine repair shops, etc - form a delicate eco-system, and there is no telling how many businesses need to leave before the entire support system collapses.  We in the world of costumes and wardrobe are dependent on many of the businesses located in the Garment Center.  Costume shops that make costumes for Broadway, The Met Opera, NYC Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, television and film are in and out of stores and suppliers each and every day to produce the costumes of which take care.  We use those same shops and stores for our work.
It is imperative that we work to encourage the city to protect and strengthen the zoning of this vibrant neighborhood. WHAT CAN WE DO?
Check in with savethegarmentcenter.org
* see what actions and plans they have.
Write to Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer- ( [email protected] )
*Thank her for her support for keeping the Garment Center and its proximity to our Broadway Theaters intact. Share stories of how important the stores and suppliers are to you.
Write to Community Board 5- ( [email protected] )
* They advise the city council on zoning proposals and land use in this neighborhood.  Once again, share stories of what we do and why having easy access to the Garment Center is important.
Write to Lydia Downing VP of the Economic Development Corporation-  ( [email protected] )
*This is the part of city government that is floating the plan to offer space to displaced garment center businesses in Sunset Park Brooklyn.  Money matters to this office, I urge you to also share stories of buying supplies and the economies of working in wardrobe and our relation to the Garment Center.

Werk Week I stumbled across Weeksville many years ago for a performance by Pharoah Monch in the gardens. I was actually taken a back that as a native of Brooklyn, I never knew this place existed. All the while enjoying hiphop I was approached by a beautiful African woman who asked "Are you Senegalese?" I said I was born in Brooklyn & my family is from the south. She smiled "I think you are. You have the features." Ever since then I was always approached by African people as being Senegalese & even weirder I told my father of my story. He said he was told he was as well. As a designer to [discover] your brand & what you stand for, you must first [uncover] yourself. You will have no clue what you are about if you do not understand your own history. My stumble years ago at Weeksville has helped me as a teaching artist on recon mission to gather info for students but heightened my senses that I am also doing a recon mission on myself. My father is a patternmaker & business owner in midtown. The women of Weeksville ran their own businesses making clothes. Here I am doing the same thing. I think the best father's day gift I can give my pops is just to continue legacy. Legacy. Heritage. Blackness. Power. "Weeksville Heritage Center, Brooklyn’s largest African-American cultural institution, is a multidisciplinary museum dedicated to preserving the history of the 19th century African American community of Weeksville, Brooklyn - one of America’s first free black communities."
