I'm trying to get into comics, any recommendations?

I'm a DC girl so this list is gonna be very DC heavy, sorry.

DC

All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely: The book that made me a Superman fan. Beautiful, joyful, self-contained story.

The Flash by Mark Waid: Will make you a Flash fan. Some of the first comics I ever read come from this run. The original run is collected in omnibus format but Mark had a second, shorter run from around 98-2000 that wrapped up a lot of loose ends, and another one around 2008. Those are good too.

The New Teen Titans by Marv Wolfman and George Perez: This book probably saved DC, and it's a wonderful read.

Batman by Scott Snyder: One of the best modern Batman runs, although it suffers from the stink of the New 52 at times.

52 by Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, and Keith Giffen: Might need some onboarding for this one but it's a great read focusing on some of the second-string characters in the DCU and a triumph of collaborative storytelling. Its spinoff Booster Gold series is great too.

Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross: A surprisingly-accessible refutation of the 1990s trend towards darker and edgier superheroes, it's a must-read for the beautiful painted artwork alone.

Mister Miracle and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, both by Tom King: Tom King's had some big misses, especially Heroes in Crisis, for which as a Wally West fan I should want his blood. He makes up for it when he hits, though. These two titles are his best work.

Secret Six by Gail Simone: A great off-beat title revolving around a small group of supervillains trying to do good. Wish they'd bring this concept back tbh.

DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke: A love letter to the Silver Age of Comics with gorgeous artwork. Was later adapted into an animated film, which is also very good.

Dwayne McDuffie's original Milestone Comics (incl. Icon, Hardware, and Static), are all very good titles focusing specifically on Black heroes. McDuffie also had a great run on Justice League of America from 2007 to 2009.

Justice League International by Keith Giffen, J. M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire: A great and hilarious book that offers a much more lighthearted take on the DC Universe. There's a lot of focus on more obscure and minor characters which I always enjoy.

Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison and Rachel Pollock: If you've seen the TV show, it cribs heavily from this. A lovely series featuring a group of misfits trying to find their way in the world.

Jack Kirby's Fourth World: Brilliant, esoteric, at times close to incomprehensible. A must-read.

The Question by Dennis O'Neil: A wonderfully cerebral and philosophical series. Denny left reading recs in every issue! See also his run on Green Lantern/Green Arrow, which is a bit outdated but still electrifyingly political for its time, and his seminal run on the Batman titles.

Marvel

Uncanny X-Men by Chris Claremont: One of the greatest comic book runs of all time. Largely defined the X-Men for several generations basically until the Krakoa era. Most X-Men stories on the "greatest of all time" list come from this run.

Vision by Tom King: Hey, it's Tom King again! He wrote for Marvel too. This one's a really good character piece featuring a character who often doesn't get to stand on his own.

Daredevil by Mark Waid: The best Daredevil run, hands down.

The Amazing Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko: The original Spider-Man run is still my favorite. Some great Silver Age nonsense combined with great character drama is what put Marvel on the map, and it's on full display here.

Runaways by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona: A really good series that's mostly self-contained about a bunch of kids who run away from home after discovering that their parents are supervillains.

Fantastic Four by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo: I sing Waid's praises a lot, but damn can he write. The best run for Marvel's First Family.

Others

Bone by Jeff Smith: An epic fantasy adventure starring three cartoon funny animal characters. My favorite comic of all time.

Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai: Another epic starring funny animals, this time set in the Edo period of Japan. Mostly episodic, so it's really easy to jump into.

Astro City by Kurt Buseik: Another love letter to the Silver Age, and to superheroes in general. Essential reading.

Very much so a hot take but Daredevil isn't even in the top 5 pre-D+ MCU shows that needed an additional season. Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Cloak and Dagger, Runaways, and Agent Carter all needed the revival more.

Daredevil Season 3 is honestly a fantastic ending for the series in my opinion, and with the five other shows I mentioned, not only did four of them only get two seasons, but all five were left with major unresolved plotlines. Luke Cage S3 could easily have been one of the best MCU seasons with Luke taking over Harlem's Paradise, Iron Fist S3 was gonna really get crazy with the Orson Randall stuff, Cloak and Dagger S3 would have finally had Ty and Tandy get together, Runaways S4 would have actually gotten around to having Alex go joker mode, and Agent Carter literally ended on a pre-credits scene where one of the shows main characters got shot in the head by an unknown assailant. All these shows need continuations way more, I'm sorry.

It's not that I don't like Daredevil, I love that show. My other two favorites are Jessica Jones and Agents of Shield, and you'll notice they're both absent from my above list because they also ended pretty well in my opinion. They don't need continuations like the other shows do.

I'll also say Marvel revived the wrong X-Men animated show, but I'll save that discussion for another day.

So, Nico Minoru's in Spider-Man Freshman Year... Let's talk about it.

About a year ago, Marvel spilled some details about the upcoming animated Spider-Man series, Spider-Man Freshman Year. There was a lot of discussion about it, what it was, what it wasn't, and whether what it is is better or worse then what people wanted it to be.

A couple weeks ago, a trademark filing indicated that the show was scheduled for Winter 2024. In an era where companies are killing announced and nearly-finished projects, I was honestly thinking the show was on thin ice... but since it seems to still exist, I want to talk about something that I feel has gotten surprisingly little discussion in all the discourse about the show: the inclusion of Nico Minoru, of the Runaways, as Peter Parker's best friend.

Now, from a Peter-centered perspective, I think this choice makes sense in a very specific way? If you flash back to the original 60s Spider-Man comics, which the show seems to be trying to invoke aesthetically from the little we've seen, Peter Parker had a female close friend who was representative of 1960s youth counter-culture: Mary Jane.

The degree to which Stan Lee's own values undercut MJ's counter-culturism is something that people could/do entire academic essays about, but suffice it to say that she was meant to appeal to the zeitgeist of the era and the character's spirit certainly got through to viewers. Like, there is a reason that she the OTP for Peter for so many people, even if Lee at the time had intended to keep the focus on Peter's more traditionally conservative romance with Gwen Stacy.

Nico Minoru slots into this classic pre-MJ-as-the-love-interest MJ role very well, in my opinion at least? In her 2000s comics, she was cast as a edgy goth social outcast who made her own clothes and did her own thing... In her 2010s MCU show, she was cast again as an outcast, but with a certain amount of doomerpilled depression that she outgrows as the show goes on... In the 2020s game Midnight Suns, Nico is still a devoted goth, but also draws from queer youth culture and has a certain semi-ironic peppiness to her (she calls the player "friendo" constantly - she's just like me fr).

So, honestly, I think picking Nico Minoru for Spider-Man's best friend is a really clever move that slots her into this historical role of the foil to Peter Parker - fun choice!

However, from a Nico-centered perspective, I have a lot of questions about what this version of the character will be like practically... The biggest one being: Why is Nico in New York? One of the core concepts of the Runaways as a team is that they are a response to the oft-asked question "Why is New York always under threat? Why are there no superheroes having to save LA?". While the West Coast Avengers do, y'know, exist, the Runaways introduces another answer to this question: Supervillains cannot operate in LA without permission of the Pride, a LA-based supervillain mafia who made a pact with a demon from Limbo and require a cut of all crime committed in the city. The titular Runaways are the children of these villains, who choose to reject their parent's lifestyle and go on the run rather then be complicit in their villainy.

So... How did Nico get in New York and end up enrolling in a New York high school? That's a big change for her and I hope the explanation is satisfying.

Nico and her team also don't usually appear as traditional costumed heroes with secret identities, at least not for prolonged periods of time. They've used several codenames and several costumes, but it's always bit a touch comedic - Nico goes by "Sister Grimm" because they decide they need nicknames to be superheroes as somewhat-cringy-teens while she later uses "The Gloom" partially at the encouragement of her girlfriend, but she's still largely just... Nico. It's worth noting that both Midnight Suns and Marvel Snap break naming conventions to call her by her first/last name instead of an alias - something Snap mostly does with big-deal characters like Jean Grey and Kitty Pryde, with even other characters more known by their real name like Emma Frost and Danielle Moonstar being called by their hero names instead...

So, I'm curious if Nico will be using her powers to fight crime and, if she is, what codename/costume she has... On top of that, I wonder if Peter Parker will know that Nico is a blood witch and if Nico will know that Peter Parker is Spider-Man - or if they mutually uncover that across the events of the series... Doctor Strange is also set to be in this show - will he be a mentor for her as a budding witch, perhaps even more then he is a mentor for Peter? There's a lot of possibilities there too.

Finally, there's the big question of Nico Minoru's queerness. Now, there's basically two lists of Marvel queers - the characters written as queer by the writers and artists at Marvel and the characters Marvel corporate have actually approved as being queer and stamped with a big rainbow stamp of approval. This is what separates your "did a gay kiss once" characters from your "paraded out every June" characters...

Nico is in the latter category and is potentially one of the most corporate-approved queer characters there are. This girl is BISEXUAL and Marvel is uncharacteristically interested in making sure you know it. She got a Pride variant cover kissing her girlfriend when Pearlmutter was still at the company. Her MCU show is full of gay kisses and has not one but TWO fantasy gay wedding sequences (it also got removed from Disney+ earlier this year, funny that).

Now, uh, America Chavez is basically the face of Sapphic Marvel in the comics and her queerness got reduced to a Pride pin in her movie, so I'm not sure if Nico's bisexuality will be acknowledged in the show given that precedent... but I sure hope it does!!! It'd be cute if Karolina pops in too, helping her girlfriend out with whatever antics she gets into... She wasn't in the initial revealed character line-up, but I could also see them waiting to reveal her and hoping to get hype specifically from shippers who haven't thought about the pairing in a few years since the Runaways TV show ended.

ANYWAY. That was a lot of thoughts, but I'm just very curious what's going to happen here... I love Nico and am eager to see her in this show, but it also just feels like such an unconventional choice... to the point where I am apparently thinking about it this hard a year later.

I realize now you asked for one fic but uh--I kinda compiled a list of some of my favorite AUs instead. I've read a lot of fics, but to save your sanity I'll stick with my 3 main fandoms: Linked Universe, Kingdom Hearts, and Tales of the Abyss. I'll tag authors where I can, but some I just couldn't find anywhere 😭

This definitely isn't all of them but if I tried to compile every single AU I've loved, we'll be here all day.

Familiars by @kutikue @letoasai- all the characters are witches and/or familiars. I've just started reading it but it seems good so far! Definitely one of a kind!

Runaway Wind by Pred1059 - Ven wakes up early. It gets very off the rails very quickly.

Vulpes to Dandelions by YumeTakato (deviantart profile)- An Ava is Sora's Mom AU as well as a Master of Master's Arc speculation series. This one also goes into alternate universes and other things that make it unique.

Links Assemble by @vicmillen (Victor_Millen on AO3)- Marvel fusion AU featuring Warriors as Captain America. It's in-the-works so seriously, go over to Vic's blog and check it out!

Townhouse AU by st0rmy - a really fun AU where all the Links end up living in the same townhouse together. Chaos ensues. Time is tired.

Tales of Courage from Across the Galaxy by @wizard-finix (CubanCracker62 on AO3) - Star Wars fusion. I'm currently reading it, but it's good so far! There's also some art for it too!

Linked Nexus AU by @zarvasace- Space AU. I've just started reading it but I can't wait to see where it goes.

Wing Bois AU by @breannasfluff - probbaly one of the most unique AUs in the fandom. The Links have wings and bird traits. It's also very fluffy!

Hero's Aspect AU by @tashacee - Wild gets stuck in the Hero's Aspect outfit. I'm currently trying to catch up on all 45 parts, but it's definitely one of the biggest AUs for Linked Universe.

Opera House AU by @bokettochild (FlamingIdiot on AO3) - modern AU but all the Links work in an opera house. It a very different and interesting setting for a modern AU. I also can't reccomend Ketto's fics enough to be honest.

Fierce Hero 9 by @crazylittlejester (Can_Opener on AO3)- Big Hero 6 but it's Linked Universe. It loosely follows the plot of the movie, but there are some huge, interesting differences between this and the movie.

Tales of the Abyss:

Bladework by @starcrossed-sky - probably the best "Asch joins the group" series out there. Lots of political intrigue. The characters are so well-written and the 2nd person POV is so unique! Definitely made me obsessed with 2nd person POV lol. Follows the plot of the game initially

Reflections by @darkangelmya - an AU where Asch decides to return to the manor instead of running away with Van. Asch is an overprotective brother and it's awesome! Also follows the plot of the game, probably the most religiously of all my other fic recs for this game

Troth by @daily-rayless (Rayless_Night on AO3) - A post-game Asch comes back too AU focused on Asch and Natalia's relationship. Very beautiful, Rayless is an amazing author!

As for stuff I've written... I have to say the more unique ones boil down to [obscure media I read when I was 13] fused with either Linked Universe or Kingdom Hearts 😅 So like, my Lockwood and Co Fusion or the Stravaganza fusion I'm thinking of making lol. I also have a lot of unfinished Kingdom Hearts fics from years ago, like a "Eraqus gets brought back to life but he's 16 again and has amnesia" fic and a "Brain ends up in the time of Days and changes things" fic.

As for serious fics... I can't not plug my passion projects, the Reconnect the Chain AU and Relinked AU. They're both Linked Universe fics where the Links reunite (though I'm planning Relinked to be a comic). They're AUs of each other, with Reconnect the Chain being an AU that boils down to "what if Relinked happend 10 years earlier minus all the kidnapping?" (AKA, it's my fluff outlet lol).

I yet again managed to write an essay but uh--enjoy the fic recs!

Doctor Strange and the supernatural characters pt 1 - Nico Minoru

Since Nico will soon be featured in v6, I decided to start with her. For context, let’s do a quick review on her character.

Nico Minoru is a member of the Runaways, a team of teenagers that found out their parents were part of a cult called The Pride. Their goal was to perform a ritual to release the elder gods called Gibborin, who would feed on the souls of the entire world and claim it for themselves. The Runaways saved the world, but their parents died in the process. As a consequence, their hearts never recovered from that trauma, which only worsened due to the following betrayal of one of their teammates, Alex Wilder. The TV show is more or less loyal to the characters, but there are heavy differences in case you’re wondering (and one of them is Nico’s character development, which I’ll explain in a second).

Nico comes from a powerful japanese clan of wizards and her weapon is/was The Staff of One, which she stole from her evil parents. It turns out this artifact is actually an ancient sorcerer called The One, who was challenged by Nico’s ancestor. He lost the battle and thus was turned into the Staff. Nico only learned about that recently in the last Runaways volume, when The One came out and revealed himself.

In the past, Nico was forced to draw her own blood to summon the Staff out of her body, but after making a (terrible) deal with The One, she no longer needs to harm herself in order to summon the staff. In exchange, The One releases a drop of his own essence into Nico’s soul, one at a time. On top of that, her staff allows her to perform spells only once, failing whenever she tries to repeat them. But this is not the only issue with Nico and her magic.

She went through a VERY traumatizing experience along with her teammate Chase in Avengers Arena, when Arcade kidnapped sixteen teenagers and created his own Battle Royale scenario. She lost an arm and actually died there, but the staff brought her back, boosting her magic powers and giving her a new artificial arm, although turning her a little more violent. Her mental health was severely damaged there, and so she decided to never speak of that incident ever again.

Following this event, in Avengers Undercover, she infiltrated Zemo’s organization along with the survivors of Murderworld. Their first goal was to rescue Elsa Bloodstone’s little brother, Cullen, unaware that he actually wanted to stay in order to find Arcade and get revenge for Murderworld.

Meanwhile, Nico was welcomed by Daimon Hellstrom (please don’t ask), who was working under Zemo’s leadership (please don’t ask²). Daimon summoned the soul and body of Alex Wilder back from hell (since he was dead) so they could train magic together. Alex’s true intentions were never revealed, but I do suspect Daimon was using him to waste Nico’s spells and also make her vulnerable since Nico had a relationship with Alex before his betrayal. She later realizes that it’s useless to train her magic skills because she wouldn’t be able to use them a second time in battle, accusing Alex of manipulating her.

After that, Daimon teleported them to a hall where Arcade was hosting a murder game. They did kill Arcade, finally getting their revenge, but he just a meat doll created by Daimon. Zemo manipulated them all so he could lure the Avengers while he attacked S.H.I.E.L.D. and framed the kids.

Turns out Daimon was not only manipulating Nico but Cullen as well. Daimon taught Cullen how to control the monster inside him, unaware that his true intent was to put it under his control (please don’t ask³). Since Arcade was still alive, they proved their innocence, although another emotional scar was carved into their souls.

(”oh, but aren’t they teachers at Strange Academy?” you may ask. YES, they are! Marvel’s continuity, am I right?)

Later on, Nico also joined the A-Force team, which sadly didn’t last. But she became good friends with some of the members, such as Dazzler and Singularity (her relationship with Carol became sour due to a terrible event called Civil War II, although they were able to come to an understanding).

Lastly, the Runaways reunited once more, facing new challenges concerning their found family. The volume was sadly cancelled, although it brought huge changes for Nico. She asked Karolina to take The Staff of One with her to space, which depowered her magic abilities significantly. The consequences are seen in Midnight Suns, her last appearance, where she constantly struggles with self-worth and self-doubt (just like a certain magician we know hehe).

That’s what leads us to the next topic: her personality.

Nico is the very definition of a bi disaster. One of her most infamous bad habits is the fact that she’s always trying to kiss almost every member of her team in order to cope with her loneliness, whether they’re single or not. The thing is, the smallest sign of affection is enough for her to get involved with someone, and at the worst possible times (for instance, after burying a friend). Don’t get me wrong, I love her and I’ll protect her. But I can’t pretend she doesn’t have the same bad coping mechanisms than Stephen did when he was trying to forget Clea. And that’s what stood out the most to me as a Stephen stan, opening my mind to ideas of how they can bond.

The thing is, Nico constantly feels alone and insecure about her own capabilities. First of all, there’s the leadership issue. After Alex’s betrayal, she was forced into leading the Runaways, although she canonically states she never wanted that in the first place. It’s a responsibility she was never ready for.

Secondly, there’s the trust issues. Their parents lied to her all her life and tried more than once harm her. She was in love with Alex and then he betrayed everyone, constantly inserting himself into her life and making it a living hell over and over (sometimes quite literally). She trusted Doc Justice and he tried to murder the Runaways in order to promote himself, even though she swore she’d never trust adults.

And that’s a super interesting point because... The very premise of the Runaways is that adults are bad. They refuse to ask for help because the Avengers and the X-Men failed them over and over. This is why Nico never asked for Stephen’s help like Illyana did. And yet... It seems that this is about to change in v6.

I don’t really know where writers are going with their relationship, but I do hope that Stephen realizes that The One is slowly infecting Nico’s soul. That’s a good thing, believe it or not, because Stephen can be a good role model to Nico and a bridge for her to work on her trust issues regarding adults. He can teach her how to get rid of The One’s grip and also teach her safer methods to perform magic. Friendly reminder that Wong also taught her a spell or two.

Overall, I believe that the Strange Academy was a fresh start to her because Nico doesn’t really have a purpose. Karolina is her first stable relationship, and she’s off to space to deal with Majesdanian stuff. Besides, if Nico is considered to be the “mother” of the Runaways, Chase was the “father”, and he was taken to the future for a reason yet to be explored in future stories. Point is, she needs an adult figure to reassure her. The Midnight Suns was another good addition because she was able to open up with Illyana and find comfort and self-worth.

Personally, this is truly touching and meaningful because, as I always like to put, the magic community has something quite special going on. Their connection runs deeper because of the soul/spirituality. And that’s why I have huuuuuge hopes that Stephen will be able to reach out for her. It’s been shown that he keeps in touch with her whenever magic is involved, not to mention the school itself.

It’s true that they barely interacted in the past, mostly because Nico is always neglected when it comes to big magic events (Last Days of Magic, Civil War II etc). Strange Academy was another missed opportunity, but there’s room now thanks to the team of v6.

This is what I’m looking forward to, honestly. Even with limited powers, Nico is quite creative, although her self-destructive tendencies get in her way, which is exactly what v4!Stephen used to be. I’m pretty sure he’d see himself in her and would do his best to support her. That’s Nico’s opportunity to bond and grow as a character, to work on her trust issues, to heal from the trauma she’s been through and create healthy relationships, not only when it comes to Stephen, but the magic community as a whole. Friendly reminder that he taught magic to both Jericho and Illyana and almost became Billy’s and Wanda’s mentor.

So this is it. As you can see, the potential and background are all there. I’m really excited to see what comes next for them and I do hope they’re able to create a nice and sweet bond in the next issues!

Chase was staring at his computer, trying to find some clue as to Gert's whereabouts. Ever since she mysteriously disappeared a few years ago, not even Nico had been able to find her.

So, without a second thought, he set the coordinates on his device and prepared to go into the past, he had finally found out what had happened to Gert and no one had noticed.

She arrived before the interdimensional being that was stalking her managed to get to her and take her away.

He was not prepared to go back to living in a future without her.

Team Supplemental - The Runaways

The group of young heroes known as The Runaways is composed of the children of a group of super villains who had controlled much of organized crime in Los Angeles, California.  These villains were called ‘The Pride’ and they had maintained their empire by offering blood sacrifices to the powerful, extra-dimensional beings known as The Gibborim. The sacrifices the Pride offered up to these beings would ultimately allow The Gibborim to invade and destroy the earth.  

Upon realizing that their parents were villains whose actions could bring about an end to the world, Gertrude Yorkes, Chase Stein, Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, Karolina Dean, and Molly Hayes all decided band together so to stop their parents.  Accompanied by a genetically augmented deinonychus named Old Lace, the group would go on to have numerous adventures and came to be known as the Runaways.  In the final confrontation between The Runaways and The Gibborim, the Pride chose to sacrifice themselves so to save their children, stranding the malevolent entities in their home dimension.

Orphaned and on the run, The Runaways stuck together and would have many more adventures.  Along the way, their ranks were joined by the cyborg, Victor Mancha, and the Skrull known as Xavin.  

The team first appeared in The Runaways Vol. 1 #1 (2003).

Can I request Cloak from ultimate Spider-Man having to deal with a child reader who had been separated from their family during a villain attack and the reader hiding under his cloak and clings to him and it turns out it’s fury’s kid and cloak has been assigned to watch them because reader asked for him specifically because he protected them and now wears a blanket like a cloak and nova or one of the others tease him about having a tiny version of him((I can just see nova teasing him and is this request okay?))

Of course you can request this! This doesn’t break any of the blog’s rules, so it’s a perfectly okay request, don’t worry about it my dear 😊 Thank you so much for sending in a request for what’s a rather underloved fandom on this blog! It makes me really happy to see. This is my first time writing for Cloak, but I do hope you’ll enjoy!

Cloak honestly does have some misgivings about the heroism stuff. He struggles to always know what to do, and his own learned distrust of the world makes him wary of jumping into situations and helping complete strangers. It’s something he works really hard to fix and improve on, especially with the influence of his fellow Heroes, so he’s definitely a real force of good but a more cautious and wary one who isn’t likely to jump straight into the thick of things.

That being said, because of his own rough upbringing, the fact that he’s a runaway kid, and he knows how hard and terrifying childhood can be, he’s really got a huge soft spot for children and other teens his age. That soft spot remains no matter how old he gets, for anyone wondering. The second he does see a child in danger, that typical mistrust and all those misgivings of his fly away from his mind and he truly acts on complete impulse. His body almost moves on its own before his brain catches up because he needs to save that child in danger. It’s not just that he wants to, there is a piece of his soul and his brain that needs to save as many children as he can, needs to ensure they have all these wonderful opportunities to keep living, to find and keep happiness.

Needless to say, the second he sees that child in danger during a villain attack, he’s on it. He hyper-focuses on them and ensures they don’t get harmed any more than they were when he first saw them, even if it means his own body suffers because of it. He fully steps up and he would definitely be a hero to the child in question, because that child would not only see their savior but would also see the soft side of Cloak that really only Tandy gets to see.

The only thing I disagree with at all in this scenario is the kid hiding under Tyrone’s cloak, solely because, when fighting, Cloak’s actual cloak is part of his portal to the Darkforce Dimension (at least, I’m very much assuming it is based on Marvel mythology, which Ultimate Spider-Man borrowed heavily from in different bits and pieces, though each character is its own unique portrayal in the universe of the show). It’s part of his field of darkness, and people within Cloak’s darkness feel numbing cold and see absolutely horrifying visions of their own worst fears and nightmares. Any long periods of exposure to Cloak’s darkness results in the person’s life force starting to slowly drain away and unless Cloak releases them from the portal, they really do die. Like Cloak’s power is insane and dangerous and that’s something he struggles with.

The possibility he’d risk exposing a child to any of that is absolutely zero, but because they are in the middle of a villain fight, Cloak needs to be able to use that Darkforce Dimension and his field of darkness, which is generally used with his cloak as a focal point. I see him more consistently always making sure that the kid is hiding behind his legs, with Cloak being this kid’s human shield and constantly being aware of where the child is and soothing their panic with assurances that he’s going to get the kid out of this, everything will be fine, just leave it to him and those kind of things. Again, kids bring out Tyrone’s hidden inner softie.

Of course, Tyrone’s ecstatic that he saved the kid and he’s kind of touched by how thankful the kid is to him. Like, the very second that kid is telling him how awesome Cloak is and how he’s this kid’s new favourite superhero, Tyrone gets all tongue-tied and he’s definitely huddling a bit deeper into his cloak to hide how badly he’s blushing, though he definitely does try to play it cool.

When the kid is taken away to find his guardian’s, Cloak really thinks that is the last he’ll see of the kid. The whole thing really does do something to his heart and makes him feel really damn good to be honest, and even his teammate’s teasing him about the kid’s loud amazement of Cloak’s powers and declarations of how cool he is won’t really get to him as much as they normally would, though he still snarks back. Just not to the normal extent that he would.

So, imagine Cloak’s surprise, a bit later, to find himself being assigned a new mission. He’s initially a little disappointed at being assigned a protection mission because that’s not really something he enjoys as much. Protection missions, yeah he’s good at them, he’s suited for them, but they tend to be boring. But when it turns out that he’s assigned to protect the kid?

Cloak is honestly thrown right for a fucking loop. He never expected to see the kid again and he’s really happy that he’s getting that chance but there’s utter confusion about it all too. When he learns all the details and sees that the kid has started copying his style and is still declaring that they want to be just like Cloak, he’s having no second thoughts about the mission. Again, Tyrone adores kids. While he’s struggling to really know what to say to the kid, he’s happy to let the little one chatter on and on, and he tries to control some of his more snarky and rude nature when around the child.

His teammates definitely take advantage of this to tease him about his newly found mini-me. Tandy’s having a ball with it all, both to tease her best friend and because she does kind of find this really cute. Nova, Peter, and Flash are all right up there among people who are loving the opportunity to good-naturedly rib Cloak about all this.

It’s just a cute idea I have but at some point, I really do see Cloak searching out and using his own earnings to buy his new ‘sidekick’, as the kid will loudly declare themselves a few times, their own version of a cloak, as close to his own as he could find.

More Differences Between the Screenplay and Theatrical Release

I'm only on page 104 of 259. I might have to stop mentioning very minor changes or this will take days.

Another deleted dialogue. Shuri asks Ross if "DARPA" or "Project Pegasus" are the ones who made the vibranium detector. Both Marvel bad government agencies. DARPA has been mentioned in Agents of SHIELD and Runaways (hopefully both of those are canon!) and Project Pegasus is in several projects most prominently in Captain Marvel and The Avengers 1. (RiRi is out here putting the government to shame and I support her.)

Some extra bit of RiRi and Shuri bonding. On the motorcycle, Shuri compliments it and Riri asks her to keep it safe. Scene concludes with Riri shooting down a police helicopter.

Subplot involving Riri's notebook computer appears to have been cut. It was supposed to fall out of her Ironheart suit when she hit the pavement of the bridge. Val is to note it when she investigates (at the same time Ross finds the kimoyo beads) and since it's taken into custody. Then Ross mentions it to Ramonda when they speak over the kimoyo beads.

Okoye says the Talocanil are sensitive to fire and heat. This was probably cut because there wasn't much fire and heat in the way the fight was filmed. But maybe it's still important for your Namora fireside lover fanfic.

A bit more information on names from the scene where Okoye is dismissed. Okoye is called "Okoye daughter of Korabo" when addressed formally and Ayo is "Ayo, daughter of Kani". There is also a scene where Ramonda makes Ayo general. Which I know from what she wears later on but I still would've liked to see how Florence Kasumba played it.

Another scene between Val and Ross that I'm glad was cut. He was worried about "innocent bystanders" getting shot. She is annoyed he wasn't worried about the cops. Everything with Ross and Ramonda has multiple options. Not sure if this means it was when or why it was rewritten.

The scene between Ramonda and Namor on the beach was also rewritten. Then she prays to Bast for Shuri. And there is a scene between her and Griot about Nakia:

GRIOT Where to, my queen?

RAMONDA I need to see an old friend. Nakia, daughter of Yaa.

GRIOT I apologize my queen. The princess forbade me from collecting data on Nakia daughter of Yaa. She said she is, and I quote, “Dead to me.”

RAMONDA I do not need data from you about the love of my son’s life. I know exactly where she is.

8. The full text of the scene between Okoye and the Dora Milaje that was in the first trailer but not scene in the movie begins on page 99. Aneka was among them and she wants to allow Okoye to go. This is why she quits the dora milaje. This will probably be a deleted scene when it's on blu-ray.

9. The Mayan woman who Nakia speaks to about Namor says much more in the script, "When I was young, we would play in the rainforest and sometimes would catch a glimpse of a man with winged feet on the shore of the beach, or a river. Sometimes as a form flitting through the sky.

• All the housewardens of NRC became a male equivalent of black widow assassins in marvel

• They are all aged up slightly

-Leona, Malleus -20

-Riddle, Kalim, Azul - 18

• There memories of their life when they were young were erased

• Before they graduated in becoming a assassin four of the housewardens escaped

• Malleus, Leona, Idia, and Azul escape and has been on the run since then

• Vil, Riddle, and Kalim couldn't escape

• Riddle's reason for not escaping was because Kalim got injured and couldn't go

• Vil's reason for not escaping because he needed to protect Kalim and Riddle

• Since Kalim got hurt, he really wanted the other 2 to escape but was slightly relived they didn't (he slightly felt guilty about it)

• Riddle and Kalim are co-dependent to each other and only trust each other and Vil

• Vil specialize in Honey pot missions because of his face but prefers poison to kill his target

• Riddle specializes in infiltration and only ever kill in close combat

• Kalim specialize as sniper and prefers long distance

• Both Kalim and Riddle are always partnered in missions (sometimes with Vil)

• The four runaways had gone closer as they were on the run

• Leona is protective to the group only and became closer to them

• Idia is the introvert but just as talkative when they are only with the group

• Azul is the most honest but a liar when tricking others

• Malleus us the older brother that would protect them no matter what

• They slowly remembered their past (before the red room)

• They regretted leaving the other 3 but they needed to leave

• They were taken in by the NRC staff and helped them in saving their friends

• All the children that was saved was either sent back to their family or housed by NRC or RSA

• When they reunited with the other three they were happy but was horrified with the amounts of scars they littered all around their body

• They became protective of each other more than ever (especially the other 3)

• They were also reunited by their parents but some were orphaned

On Ao3, it was strictly Gertchase from Runaways (Marvel) but I've also written for Gossip Girl & Harry Potter as well.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Most of them are my earlier stuff but there's one that was more recent that people seemed to like my take on a scene. 1. A Place Isn't Home - it's my baby, my first dip into writing fic in YEARS & for a ship that I'd only just gotten into. I put a lot prep & care into it beforehand so I'll always be proud of it considering it's centered around one trope - sharing a bed. lol 2. Lost Moments - doesn't surprise me now since there were lots of missed opportunities for good Gertchase content in S2 so I just had to do a missing moments fic for them 3. Over & Over Again - inspired by the Runaways promo team releasing the first few minutes of S3 before the season dropped & gave me the opportunity to write in Chase's pov which I love since it's easy for me. 4. Maybe I'm Falling - based on the teased bed talk with Gertchase before S2 dropped (which is still a cute scene) but I kinda prefer my version lol And 5. It's Your Call - my two different takes on Gertchase's S2 kiss scene written right after the trailer had been released. And guess what? Neither one was at all like what we got. lmao

5. Do you respond to comments?

Most of the time. Considering kudos are usually the only way I know if people are liking a fic by me, getting any comments on one is kinda a big deal to me cuz I love getting them. lmao

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Angstiest ending... Well, even when I write angst, there's generally some kinda hope since I like to write angst with a purpose even if it cuts hard. But since you were my home but now i'm (so) lost is about Future Chase reflecting on Gert's death & deciding to save her, I guess that's the automatic answer. But also, Lost Moments technically since it ends with Gert deciding to get over Chase after his betrayal (I was proud of that chapter tbh)

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Ummm, basically the majority of them are happy like I said. lol Maybe I'm Falling is the purest tho since the whole thing is fluffy. hell was the journey but it brought me heaven was pretty cute too imo.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not on Ao3 since like I said, I hardly get comments as it is. But on ff.net... Trust me, I got some flames. It wasn't pretty. lol

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Before I wrote love doesn't know what distance is, the answer would have been a hard no. Mostly because I would always chicken out before I even got started. lol Somehow I convinced myself to get it a proper try on that fic and I didn't hate it??? Do I think I'm the best at it? Still no. But I'm not as scared now. It's pretty basic but at least I did it. lol

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

Not with my Gertchase fics cuz I suck at that kinda thing but during my Harry Potter days I used to experiment with AU ideas that never went too far before I deleted them. I remember I was gonna use a Real World (yes, the reality show lol) concept for a Harry/Ginny fic that never made it passed Chap 1. lmao

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of...

No.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Nope.

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

Oh, this is so hard these days because younger me would always say Chuck/Blair and they are still up there.... I think Cole/Cassie from 12 Monkeys might be my most epic ship tho, despite me never having written for them before (I wouldn't know where to start tbh) And my heart will always belong to Ron/Hermione too. I love Gertchase but at the end of the day they might actually be more of a top 10 ship for me, I just am able to be inspired to write for them.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

The ultimate WIP for Gertchase for me is a post-canon fic that initially was gonna be just a simple proposal but then I wanted to include other stuff like Gert getting pregnant, etc. so it could be a mini fic. But I've just never written it because of lost inspiration (the real life drama of the cast did kinda taint the show a bit at one point but also, the fandom's pretty dead too) That said, never say never. Maybe one day I'll do it. There's scenes I had written for it that I still have somewhere so it's possible. We'll see. lol

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. lol I know it is because that's how I start writing my fics. I tend to write scenes out like a script first because it's how I'm able to start visualizing the rest of it. Rarely does a fic of mine not start with a quote or at least a train thought by a character. I also like to think that when I do write angst I'm not afraid to go for the jugular so to speak because it's meant to hurt BUT I do always want it to have a purpose and move the story along. Also, apparently when I'm really feeling a chapter I'm not afraid to have a big word count. I can't help it. lol

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

The actual writing process. lol It doesn't always come naturally to me. I don't usually write anything all in one go unless I'm truly feeling it. Also, descriptive stuff. There's a reason why dialogue is my strength. It's writing around all that I struggle with a lot.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Um, it's intimidating. lol I did consider doing it a few times because Gert is fluent in Spanish & she was supposed to tutor Chase for it so I always thought it would be fun to tease that in a fic or two but never did. I don't want to get the translation wrong.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Harry Potter. Because I was obsessed with Ron/Hermione. And yet if you looked at my old ff.net account you'd assume it was Harry/Ginny because I deleted all my RHr related fics. lol

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

Omg, the hardest question. lol Most of them are all my bbs for different reasons. I do think my mini The College Woes trilogy is some of my strongest work to date tho because all of that is pure me going for it since it's all post-canon. I did research and had fun with the process.
