"Go Gators!" 🐊 Savannah had recently been accepted to the University of Florida as a neuroscience graduate student, which meant the whole family had to join for an orientation tour. Dad had no shortage of oohs- and ahhs-, and he absolutely had to purchase a Gator Dad shirt as soon as they found the campus bookstore. Mom could not have been more proud, but needed to remind Savannah the we are a FSU household and would not be cheering for UF come football season. Ginny spent the day enjoying the free snacks and plotting to raid her sister's closet once she moved out.
Taking a break from the horse-queue, I wanted to show off @simmedaway and I's blended family; Ginny was created by Maggie and is the daughter to my character, Mallory, and half-sister to Savannah. I can never get enough of seeing these girls in both of our games and developing their dynamics, memories, past, and future. 🥺
Dad is sort-of a half baked character between us but he's getting there. 😳

I usually loathe poetry, but <3
So I've been tentatively edging my way back into the ACD Holmes fandom at a glacier-like pace, in an effort to recapture a muse a decade forgotten. Looking for bookverse SH fans to follow, feel free to like this post or point me at them.
Meanwhile, have the poem I wrote waaaay back when, for The Empty House anthology, and then promptly forgot about until going through my WIP folder.
Cadenced scales and chords discordant Coaxed from strings, more scrape than tune Partner with the darkling twilight Shrouding all in fog-wreathed moon.
Softly now the lamp-light flickers Casting ‘cross that pensive face Shadows which betray the darkest Perils of the human race.
A child’s hope, a father’s burden A gracious lady’s firm behest – But L’art pour l’art, because the Master Is not swayed by wealth or crest.
But then! The tuneful musing halts As convoluted lies take flight. Sophistry and misconception Must give way before the Light.
Truth is Light, and his Conductor Unassuming, strong, discreet – Stalwart friend and chronicler, he Guards the sleuth of Baker Street.
Scarlet studies, Games and madmen Speckled bands but one close call. Valleys change from Fear to Shadows Heralding the Final Fall.
An Empty House stands still and silent Monument to genius gone; But no true hero lies forgotten While a chronicler lives on.
#acd holmes#in case anyone out there does the bookverse thing#i'm just married to granada#because brett is my tortured soulmate#i read the books once#and i just actually found this anthology i bought in a bookstore in savannah that was from like the 1930s#this book smells amazing#the spine is in awful shape tho#but i don't know them well enough#whomp whomp

“We are seeing a growing interest in cork as a sustainable material,” says Rui Novais, a materials expert at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. “Compared with materials like polyurethane foam [used for thermal insulation], products made with cork require less energy and produce less CO2 emissions.” The cork oak’s thick bark adapted to defend the tree from fire, making it a powerful insulating material that’s been used to shield fuel tanks on NASA spacecraft and electric car batteries. It’s also resistant to water and oil, and can withstand compression while retaining springiness. “It’s an extraordinary, renewable and biodegradable material,” says Novais. “It’s also very durable. It has been demonstrated that cork products remain virtually unchanged for more than 50 years.” Part of the carbon absorbed by cork oak trees is transferred to cork products, which can be used for long periods, repurposed and recycled. Several studies found that cork is carbon negative, meaning it can store more carbon than what is required to produce it. When cork planks are trimmed and punched to form natural cork stoppers, the leftovers are ground into granules and pressed together to form cork sheets or blocks. “Even cork dust is used to produce energy,” says João Rui Ferreira, secretary general of the Portuguese Cork Association. “It feeds the industry’s boilers and powers some of the production.”
[...]
Most of the cork produced in Portugal grows in the gently undulating hills and plains in the south of the country, in an ancient agroforestry system known as montado. This savannah-like ecosystem combines cork, holm oaks and olive trees with pastures, grazing livestock, crops and fallows. “The soil in southern Portugal is very poor, there is very little rain and temperatures are very high in the summer,” says Teresa Pinto-Correia, a professor at the University of Évora in Portugal specializing in rural landscapes and agricultural systems. “But this kind of system is productive even when resources are scarce and conditions are difficult.” For centuries, locals have preserved the montado because cork provided landowners with a source of income. This mosaic of habitats supports hundreds of species, including the Iberian lynx, the world’s most endangered wildcat, and the threatened Imperial eagle. One of the world’s oldest known cork oak trees, planted in 1783 in Águas de Moura, is known as “the whistler” because so many birds visit its large sprawling branches. Iberian pigs feed on acorns and goats graze the interwoven pastures. Interspersing cork oak trees with animals and crops can boost production and biodiversity, but also build soil, control erosion, retain water, combat desertification and sequester carbon, says Pinto-Correia.

On my knitter!Crozier bullshit and thinking so long and hard about what he would knit for each of the crew ahead of their 800 mile walk to encourage them and keep them warm, so here are some selections (with pattern links)
Jopson:
Toddler Mittens on a String by Ruth Bendig
that's crozier's special little guy!! some cozy wee mittens connected by a string so he doesn't lose them <3
Irving:
Fallen Halo by Pam Grushkin
he doesn't tell irving the name of this particular pattern. just that it will keep his neck warm.
Little:
So Basic Scarf by Olguine Brutus
sorry ned :(
Goodsir:
Padded Hiking Socks by J Kolette Beckert
keep your doctor healthy by keeping his feet warm and dry. with added padding for the soles to keep them, uh, nice and tender
Tozer:
Hunting Gloves by Elizabeth Green Musselman
he's their best shot. they need his hands warm and his trigger finger nimble.
Fitzjames:
Boyfriend Sweater by Lene Holme Samsoe
a fine gauge baselayer that will rest directly against fitzjames' skin at all times to keep him warm and protect his bullet wounds. unfortunately crozier's on sleeve island when they leave so it becomes more of a vest.
Hickey:
Knife Coaster by Melanie Thompson
he has to knit SOMETHING for hickey cause it would look bad not to, but he also wants him to die so it can't be something actually useful. the knife pattern is also subtly calling him a fucking backstabber. hickey thinks maybe it's phallic and this is crozier trying to say he wants to fuck
Bonus under the cut
He WANTS to knit Fitzjames the A La Reine Blouse by Savannah Gerlach. It'll have to wait until after they're rescued, though.
Description from pattern website: This blouse is inspired by an infamous portrait of Marie Antoinette of France, painted by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, which appeared in a short-lived exhibition in the Musée du Louvre in 1783. The queen’s depiction in a gossamer shift (what would have then been akin to her nightgown) shocked the public, and the painting was removed shortly after its debut. Today we know this style as the “chemise à la reine.”
#the terror#francis crozier#knitting#i am...WAY too deep into this#if you have a suggestion for a character I should add LET ME KNOW

Councilor Shanna Miles
Piers came to stand beside Councilor Miles... In her bare hands, she held the original copy of the modern Constitution, a thick, leather bound book. She began to recite her lines, voice amplified by the tiny microphone clipped to the collar of her deep blue shirt. (Knight of Dawn, Chapter 1)
Quick Facts
Full Name: Shanna Blaire Miles
Pronouns: she/they
Title: Councilor of the Savannah Zone of Safety (formerly: Mayor of Savannah)
Gender: Demifemale
Sexuality: Lesbian
Birthday (Age at start): November 16th, 2146 (64)
Parents: Ronan Miles, Elisha Miles (deceased)
Siblings: Jonathan Miles, Christina Miles, Sarah Miles (deceased)
Notable physical features: grey hair dyed blonde
Personality: great public speaker but socially awkward, selfless, quiet, intelligent, quick witted, calculating, devoted
Extended Intro
Councilor Shanna Miles is the longest-serving and Chief Councilor. While she initially presents herself as an enemy to Piers, the two eventually warm up to one another and grow to be close allies. Shanna was born and raised in the Savannah Zone of Safety, and their family traces their roots in the area to pre-Fall times. She grew up relatively comfortable, not rich but her parents made enough to put all four of their children through their higher education. Their mother worked as a biofuel engineer with the Royal Guard Navy, while their father was a speechwriter for several local Savannah politicians. While all of her older siblings joined the Royal Guard Academy, and eventually all became officers of varying rank in the Navy, Shanna shadowed under their father, gaining political experience and eventually becoming an intern/aide to the Mayor at the time. Eventually, Shanna worked her way up, serving as Mayor for five years before being elected to serve in the Council at age 42, and has continued to serve since. Despite being bullied constantly by Adele, Shanna has stood up for her Zone and has earned their respect.... and Shanna has also become the biggest pain in Adele's side. However, now that she's no longer Queen, Shanna finds herself in a complicated position with Piers, unable to tell their true intentions while also trying to prevent them from becoming as much of an asshole as Adele was. Shanna was married for over 20 years and had two children during that time. However, their wife and children disappeared 15 years ago and have not been seen since.

6. A song that makes you want to dance.
Television Rules the Nation/Crescendolls by Daft Punk and i mean the ACTUAL mix of them together, not the songs separately 9. A song that makes you happy.
A lot of songs make me happy! But I think Be Fine by Madeon is one I should mention. "I will, be fine." Just...calms me the fuck down. I will be fine! 11. A song that you never get tired of.
Savannah by Relient K. all the fucking way. i've had this song with me for 6 years. and it always manages to make my top 5 on spotify :) 17. A song you would sing a duet with for karaoke.
Still Alive by Aperture Science. Ever since I heard those people at the TF2con singing it all together, just automatically joining in as soon as they recognized the song. It changed me. 23. A song that you think everyone should listen to.
Anything by Rupert Holmes other than the Pina Colada song. I recommend Morning Man or Philly. Words can't even describe how much I love Holmes's music. 30. A song that reminds you of yourself.
..........Bright Idea by Mother Mother. I'd been assigned it by Ed back in 2019 and it's always...stuck with me.
