SAUNAS AND WEIGHT LOSS
How Long Should You Stay In A Sauna
If you’ve never used a sauna before, experts recommend starting small, according to the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Sauna Society, and skilled sauna bathers.
For the uninitiated. A sauna should not be used for more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
Following a workout. After exercising, wait at least 10 minutes before entering the sauna.
At its most extreme. Use the sauna for no more than 15 minutes at a time.
Since the sauna is meant for relaxing rather than counting minutes, the Finnish, from whence the word “sauna” comes, may have an even simpler suggestion: When you’ve had enough of the sauna, exit.
Continue reading to learn why a few minutes in the sauna and frequent use may be beneficial to your health.
While some experienced sauna users, particularly in Finland, may make the sauna a lengthier social affair, don’t go overboard. The longer you stay in the sauna, the more likely you are to become dehydrated, so stick to 15 to 20 minutes.
Why Lose Weight? (Does The Sauna Burn Fat)
People often use saunas to lose weight. This can be a great way to shed pounds and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When you’re in the sauna, you’ll be sweating and burning calories. But it’s important to remember that you need to be careful not to overdo it!
However, if you are burning more than that amount of calories a day and then want to burn more by using a sauna for 30 minutes on each occasion instead of just 15 minutes in one go, then you can use this formula to find out how many more calories you will burn:
(1500 – 900 = 500) * (1.2 + 0.15) = 1,300
For example, if you burn 1500 calories a day doing nothing and then burn an additional 900 calories doing a 15-minute sauna session, then the total number of calories burned during the sauna session is equal to the total number of calories burned during the day.
It’s important not to stay in too long because this could have negative consequences on your heart. Your body needs time to cool off after being exposed to high heat and humidity, but if you stay in the sauna for too long, your core temperature could rise beyond safe levels.
You also might experience dizziness or fainting. The best way is just to do 10-15 minutes of hard exercise before the heat of the sauna session begins (this will help warm up your muscles).
To make sure your heart doesn’t have any adverse effects, drink plenty of water before, during, and after your sauna session. For more reading about How To Dress For The Sauna.
How to Calculate Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
BMR is the number of calories your body needs to maintain its current weight. It accounts for both your nutritional needs and physical activity.
A person’s BMR can be calculated by multiplying their weight in kilograms by the number of hours they sleep per night by 10.
For example, if you are 60 kg and sleep 8 hours, your BMR would be about 1,200.
