Macaque trials offer hope in pneumonia vaccine development
Science News from research organizations Development of a novel pneumococcal vaccine with confirmed efficacy in macaque monkeys Date: November 28, 2023 Source: Osaka Metropolitan University Summary: A research team has successfully developed a novel pneumococcal vaccine by combining the team’s proprietary mucosal vaccine technology with pneumococcal surface proteins that can cover a wide range of serotypes. Experiments were conducted using mice and macaques and it was confirmed that pneumonia caused by pneumococcal infection was clearly suppressed in the target groups of animals inoculated with the vaccine. Share: FULL STORY The global impact of the coronavirus pandemic has ignited a renewed focus on emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University are making great strides in combating pneumococcal pneumonia, one of the leading causes of respiratory deaths worldwide. Despite the existence of vaccines against pneumococcal infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, and meningitis, the prevalence of pneumococcal pneumonia remains high. Currently, around 100 new serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae have been identified, and the increase in pneumococcal infections caused by serotypes not covered by the vaccine has become a concern. This situation underscores the need for a more versatile vaccine. Building on their previous success in mucosal responses in 2019, in which they developed a mucosal vaccine that caninduce antigen-specific mucosal immune responses, mainly immunoglobulin A (IgA), on the target mucosal surface, a research team led by Professor Satoshi Uematsu and Associate Professor Kosuke Fujimoto from the Department of Immunology and Genomics at the Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka Metropolitan University, has this time set out to bridge the gap in pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination efficacy. To successfully develop a novel pneumococcal vaccine, the research team combined its proprietary mucosal vaccine technology with pneumococcal surface proteins that can cover a wide range of serotypes. Experiments conducted on mice and macaques have demonstrated the vaccine’s efficacy in suppressing pneumococcal pneumonia in the target animal groups. “This research has succeeded in developing a vaccine formulation that can potentially be used in humans, which will advance the development of this vaccine for clinical applications,” said Professor Fujimoto. “This next-generation vaccine technology is expected to contribute to the treatment of infectious diseases in the future.” Story Source: Materials provided by Osaka Metropolitan University. ‘Heaviest Rain Ever’ in Southern Japan Sets Off Floods and Landslides
Tumblr media
Heavy rains in southwestern Japan have washed away homes, flooded hospitals, disrupted mobile phone services and cut off power and water for hundreds of households, officials said on Tuesday. The unusually high level of rainfall in Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, on Monday has left at least six people dead and three missing, Japan’s top government spokesman, Hirokazu Matsuno, said at a news conference.Another official, Satoshi Sugimoto, the top forecaster at the Japan Meteorological Agency, on Monday called it “the heaviest rain ever experienced” in northern Kyushu.Among those who died was a woman whose home was swept away by a landslide on Monday, according to NHK, Japan’s public broadcaster. Another victim was a man who had been trapped in his pickup truck in an inundated area.In recent years, rains have taken hundreds of lives in Kyushu in part because its mountainous terrain is prone to landslides. Floods in Japan in July three years ago killed at least 86 people, mostly in Kyushu, and prompted the authorities to issue evacuation orders for millions of residents. On Monday morning, the meteorological agency issued “special heavy rain” emergency warnings in parts of Kyushu. Later in the day, the agency downgraded the warnings. Local officials urged the region’s residents to evacuate to safety. By Tuesday, the rains had stopped, but officials warned residents to remain alert for landslides and floods.“I’d like to ask people to pay attention to the weather information from municipalities,” Mr. Matsuno told reporters. “Please do not approach dangerous areas.”Yoshiyuki Toyoguchi, an official with the land ministry, said at a news conference on Monday that the rains were so heavy that some of the region’s dams could overflow with another downpour. The meteorological agency also warned residents throughout Japan that rainstorms would bring strong winds and lightning on Wednesday and Thursday.Elsewhere in the world, unusually heavy rains have lashed India and parts of the United States, raising fears that climate change is driving an escalation in extreme weather events. Studies have shown that warmer weather has increased the chances of stronger storms. In India, the current monsoon season has brought more than 10 times the average rainfall for this time of year in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh. The heavy rains washed away bridges and buildings last weekend and killed 23 people.Flash floods also struck New York State on Sunday, inundating roads and causing at least one death. Vermont’s river valleys and mountain towns were also ravaged by rains on Monday.Governor Kathy Hochul of New York called the extreme weather emergencies that continued in her state “our new normal.” President Biden declared a state of emergency in Vermont early Tuesday. o maidens in your savage season (araburu kisetsu no otome-domo yo)
*WARNING: SPOILERS*
tw // sexual assault , pedophilia, sex related things mentioned, nsfw
i finished all 12 episodes today and here are just some thoughts i have about it. this is quite long so if u actually read it wow thanks 😭
although i was quite uncomfortable with some of the inappropriate pairings, i really took it in and realized that all of this is there to make it as realistic as it could be. it does not shy away from portraying the reality of everyday life. it was definitely uncomfortable to watch and get through but these are actual things that can happen.
there is a heavy focus on women in this show & what life is like for them but it does not dismiss the idea that women can be in the wrong too.
specifically, women can be predatory in behaviour as seen with sugawara basically taking izumi’s hand to grope her. there was also hongo’s feelings for milo like NO you’re a student, he is a teacher. JAIL
women can harbour feelings or thoughts that are heavily influenced by patriarchy. it is quite conservative like the way sonezaki judged people for having sex. she called them all these names and basically slutshamed women. (however she kinda changed her mind when she became close with jujo)
also, there was momo having feelings for girls which i feel was lowkey dismissed by kazusa. she openly expressed how she thought why date men when there’s women right there. (like GO GIRL)
in sugawara’s talk with izumi about sexual stuff, she points out how kazusa thinks about sex too. this got izumi really shocked because i feel like he never thought she would as well. this highlights the idea that women are not passive and all innocent. they think about sex too and have these same feelings.
the concept of sex being constantly brought up is a fun one for me. the idea of having to shave, having matching underwear, having sexy underwear, virginity, sexual thoughts, will it fit? (duh honey it’s gonna fit that hole can push out a BABY. why do you think it can’t take a dick)
the conservative and strict view of the school that they went all the way of banning interaction between the opposite sexes. just completely shutting it out. it reminds me of the idea of abstinence. in the same way, by just telling people dont do it, its not like that stops them from completely doing it. they are gonna do it regardless so why not acknowledge that and teach them properly about sex? also, being seen infront of a love hotel got students expelled like i know it is not approved in society but why? why is it seen as something wrong?
sugimoto, guy friend of momo. i knew he was shitty as soon as him and his friends first appeared. why? his friends sang a song about wanting to fuck while being with girls making some uncomfortable. sugimoto said “oh they’re good guys i swear” as soon as he said that i could not trust him. if you have to claim that just for someone to believe you then idk it doesn’t seem genuine then. also, why would he associate himself with these people knowing that then if he wasn’t just like them. also he was glorifying how guys shouldn’t let girls pay feeling all mighty about himself. he told her how he looked up to how mature she was but in reality, he was just trying to make himself look good & nice to her for her to like him. i hate how he made her feel guilty by going saying something along the lines of “you lead me on. we went on a date” & even called her a bitch because she rejected & embarassed him. he called her “crazy slut” when she said he wasn’t her friend which was true to her as that was how she felt. like calling someone crazy because someone doesnt like you??
jujo, who was openly known to be sexual, got pregnant. she was slutshamed by her own peers and her private reason for dropping out was just shared to people which allowed people to say all types of things about her.
we also have the other end if the spectrum, not being sexual at all with izumi & kazusa. they think about sex but in their relationship, there is a lack of it. i think it’s important that they showed us this since sex isnt a requirement in a relationship. it doesn’t need sex for it to be validated or to be seen as “normal”. i think it was nice that izumi and kazusa talked about it, knew they both wanted to do it but decided to wait it out & take things slow.
hongo, a highschool writer, got an editor who wanted her to write some type of erotica novel as it is “exciting”. she had to do all this research as it was deemed unrealistic. she had to shape up and undergo all this stuff of wanting to have sex just to keep her editor. the lengths she had to go to just to be told by that same editor that she should try doing something with sci-fi instead of erotica. to me it seemed like she wasnt taken seriously & was just given another topic to keep up with the times.
how manipulative pedos can be with saegusa & sugawara. as soon as i saw that man i got seriously so disgusted and uncomfortable. i mean the way he “likes little girls because they’re unpredictable” fuck that. why would you allow a man like him around children just because he is famous. isn’t that so fucked up that sugawara’s mom thought it was fine for this man to take her out to see plays and all. it was not once seen as inappropriate and this just shows how power and influence can be used to dismiss stuff like that. his manipulation of sugawara of not being boring seems just like one of his fetishes for her so she can keep trying to prove herself to him
i felt bad about sugawara because she knows she is attractive but because of that people just look at her like that. to the point that she is used to people looking at her sexually. that is such a shitty feeling to be simply seen for your body and not for who you really are. i don’t excuse what she has done but i do feel she was manipulated to do such stuff.
hongo who did everything to measure up for her editor & her teacher. for milo-sensei, she wanted to feel like she was attractive enough to be viewed sexually since he said something about not being into highschool girls like he is looking down on her. i feel like she thought she wasn’t enough of a woman because of that so she did all these crazy stuff to make herself memorable to him. (no thank you to her having feelings for him like girl NO)
THOUGH, milo is also has a responsibility here. why is he allowing her to do all these things to the point that he actually takes her to a love hotel. i mean i know he was trying to scare her off but idk if he had to go those lengths esp the underwear thing
❤️ the only person i stan in this cast is shun amagiri like he just loved sonezaki for who she was and he was unproblematic!

So I guess I was half right with my last post (now deleted).
Johngalli A. WAS voiced by Satoshi Hino.
I only got Gwess wrong thinking it was Kotono Mitsuishi cuz she sounded like Misato from Evangelion.
Also having finished the last episodes, I did deduce that it could've been Chikahiro Kobayashi who voices Rangler just cuz he sounded like Sugimoto from Golden Kamuy. Turns out I was also right.

“Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi”
119.
Tumblr media
Title: Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi (“The World’s Most Difficult Love”) Genre: Romantic, Comedy Season: Spring 2016 TV Station: NTV Theme Song: “I Seek” by Arashi Starring: Satoshi Ohno, Haru, Eiko Koike, Kazuki Kitamura, Tetta Sugimoto, Nozomu Kotaki Date Finished: February 11, 2018 My Personal Reason for Watching: Ohno in a Romantic-Comedy was a must-watch!
Tumblr media
(^^ Ohno in love?! Now, this I had to see…)
I’ve been on a roll with my J-Drama watching!  I’m addicted to dramas once again and I couldn’t be happier(^o^)/   This drama has been on my to-watch list for about two years and I finally got around to seeing it!
This drama is about Reiji Samejima (Ohno), the president and CEO of Samejima Hotels.   His aggressive and straightforward behavior has helped him to succeed in the business world, but not so much for his love life.  One day, Misaki Shibayama (Haru), starts working in the company as his new employee. Reiji is infatuated with Misaki and wants to pursue her.  With the help of his assistant, Muraoki (Koike), his driver, Ishigami (Sugimoto), and his rival, Wada (Kitamura), he tries to succeed in love for the first time in his life.
Tumblr media
(^^ Drinking milk even though you hate milk to impress the girl who likes milk? Aww Reiji-san:))
I finished this drama in a week, so if that isn’t any indication that I loved this drama then I don’t know what is.  I have never seen Ohno in a romantic lead before and it was quite refreshing.  His character had a little Kaibutsu-kun in it, but I think that worked for Ohno.  Being so clueless in love and having an almost childish aspect to his character made you root for Reiji.  Reiji doesn’t seem to be the most likable or sympathetic character due to his actions. However, Ohno portrayed him in a way that you can be sympathetic towards his character at times.   Although some of those tactics that his rival, Wada, taught him would hit him straight with a sexual harassment claim real fast though.   In the times of MeToo and TimesUp, it was a little uncomfortable to see these highly acclaimed CEO’s talk about how to succeed in romance with their much younger female employees even if it was just fiction.
Tumblr media
(^^ “Master! Teach me the ways of romance!”  Uh…maybe it’s better not to follow his advice, Reiji).
I think what worked for this drama was the great supporting cast.  The characters at Samejima Hotels were all well played especially Muraoki and Ishigami (Reiji’s confidantes).  Miura (Kotaki) was amusing at times when being clueless to Reiji’s actions (i.e. “he said good morning to us because I’m wearing a blue tie!”).   Misaki was a good love interest for Reiji as she was calm, collected, and cool, but not afraid to back down from Reiji’s arrogance and immaturity.  However, I wish that Haru and Ohno had better chemistry.  On the other hand, the chemistry between Koike and Kitamura was much better (even though they didn’t end up together).
Tumblr media
(^^ I wish it worked out between them, but Muraoki is devoted to Reiji)
Overall, this drama had me intrigued throughout the whole ten episodes.  All of the characters brought something to the table and it was a delight to watch!  I highly recommend this drama!
Favorites: Favorite Character: Ishigami and Muraoki!  They supported Reiji and slapped some sense into him when he was being unreasonable (especially Muraoki on that part).  Favorite Episode: The first episode really hooked me in!  Favorite Scene: When Reiji and Misaki were at the beach. Reiji was so happy that his hobby of taking pictures of mushrooms wasn’t seen as disgusting by Misaki.  Ohno was just so cute in that scene!
Tumblr media
(^^ “I’m not disgusting! Ah! The water is warm!”(^^))
“Sekai Ichi Muzukashii Koi” Rating: Story: ✭✭✭✭½ I love the story and I love this drama! Acting: ✭✭✭✭ Ohno, Kitamura, Koike…such a great cast!! Theme Song: ✭✭✭½ Not my favorite Arashi song of all time, but the lyrics and beat suited the drama well.  I love the opening to the drama though (the score was amazing!).  Total: 12/15
Tumblr media
(^^ Speaking of Arashi…that Sakurai cameo :D)
 Next Up: “Yokoso, Wagaya E”
Tumblr media
(^^ Isanami Suyao. Isanami Shiho.)

本日から3日間に渡り行われるオンライン映像上映イベント「VIDEO PARTY 2020」に参加します。 自分は本日8/21、20:00〜の「Program2」にて、『東京節2020 - This Is Tokyo - Ver.D.S』が上映されます。
■Announcement for VIDEO PARTY in KYOTO 2020 There are many video works created by various independent artists these days, many of which seem to have no storylines and contents hard to comprehend. But the potential of this media is limitless and there are many fresh imageries being created continuously. Unfortunately, we do not have enough occasions in which we can come in contact with borderless variations of the genre. It is for this reason we assemble this VIDEO PARTY, where we can screen and make records of these ever-growing works of independent artists, as well as to simply increase the opportunity for Indies video works to be seen. Based in Kyoto, the VIDEO PARTY has been organized for independent artists to exhibit their works, regardless of their nationality, affiliation, standpoint and genre - ranging from drama, animation, experimental and documentary - and has been screening publicly offered works, since 2013. For this year, the PARTY will be held in July (provisional), at the “Lumen Gallery”, a video-specialized gallery established in Kyoto. We have also started the work exchange program since 2014, in cooperation with several overseas film festivals, educational establishments and Indies film screening organizations. In 2016, we had successful screenings in Taiwan, South Korea and Macau and China, to introduce participating works of the VIDEO PARTY. We plan to expand the interaction and create more opportunities to screen in more locations this year. We anticipate your joining to this opportunity of witnessing the future and exploring the potentials of video works, woven by various independent artists.
In 2020, the entire world is in a situation that has never been experienced before. The purpose of VIDEO PARTY staff is to interact with each other through screenings, and we have always valued the form of "screening" face-to-face. But now that the threat of the new coronavirus has shut down the means to do so, we can't just wait for the situation to subside. Therefore, as a new attempt, we will be screening the film on the Internet from August 21 to 23.
We look forward to your participation in this "place" that explores the future and further possibilities of the images spun by the eyes of individuals. First of all, we ask for your entry as an announcement of your participation.
■ONLINE 上映 8月21日(金)〜23日(日)にネット配信による上映を行ないます。

Disclaimer: This is a popular fan video made a couple of years ago way before the donghua was announced. I do think that the original Chinese VAs are great and I like what they did in TKA. This is not meant to be a comparison between Japanese and Chinese voice acting.
This is a what-if. And also pretty much a dream seiyuu cast! Imagine if all these seiyuu all come together for a Japanese take (and how much big the budget would be)! The ending song is nice too! It’s a bit spoiler-ish, provided you understand Chinese. But if you can read Chinese, I am presuming you might have already read the whole story anyway. ¯\_( ◉ 3 ◉ )_/¯ The pictures themselves don’t really give away too much.
