"I just don't think it'll work."

Sasha froze in the act of reaching for the door. She was not, by and large, a believer in the sunk cost fallacy and indeed rather felt that there was no point too late to make better choices, so even though she'd been closer to the cafe than the Institute - admittedly not by much - when she'd spotted the dark clouds on the horizon, she'd still opted to turn around and go back for her umbrella, on the basis that possibly getting a little wet if it caught her before she was able to retrieve it was better than getting a little wet if it caught her before she got to the cafe and then having to walk all the way back in a deluge. She meant to just slip in, grab it, and head out, but the sound of Melanie's voice, and more importantly the faint note of despair in it, pulled her up short.

"Why not?" Tim's voice, not Martin's. That was...worrying. Sasha gnawed at her lip. The Unknowing was close - they would be leaving the next day, while she and Tim stayed behind - and they'd been laying plans for a while. Melanie - and Gerry and Martin - were their litmus tests for how well a plan would work, since they'd been doing this so long, and they'd signed off on this one, but if Melanie thought it wouldn't work...

"Well, she's...you know. And I'm...me." Melanie sounded unusually vulnerable. Sasha wanted to go in and give her a hug, reassure her that she was stronger than Nikola Orsinov and that everything would be fine. But, guiltily, treacherously, she hovered outside the door and eavesdropped shamelessly. She wanted all the facts before she swept in to save the day.

Tim's sigh sounded less resigned Archival Assistant and more exasperated older brother. "Neens. I know you've had a shitty time of it with people you've dated before, but trust me, okay? Sasha's not going to force you into anything you don't want to do, and she's sure as hell not going to make sex a condition of being in a relationship with her." There was a brief pause, enough time to pat Melanie on the shoulder. "She likes you. You like her. The rest will take care of itself."

It was several seconds before Melanie replied, and Sasha could hear the smile in it that she hadn't heard in a while. "You think she likes me, huh?"

"Well, she sure doesn't cuddle me in my sleep."

Melanie laughed - actually laughed - and Sasha heard footsteps heading away from the door. She paused and counted to ten before opening the door for her umbrella.

She wasn't meant to hear that. She probably shouldn't act on it. She certainly shouldn't say anything tonight; she'd already done enough "just in case" and didn't want to tempt fate further. But...maybe when Melanie got back, she would tell her what she'd said on the tape. About how she needed her to be safe.

After all, Melanie hadn't been meant to hear that either.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news (I don't this is delightful) but almost all TMA ship names with the exception of a very few are literally just character+character name smoosh especially if the ship contains Jon. We have combos such as jonmartimsasha, jontim, timsasha, sashamelanie, gerrymartin. It's a bit unfortunate but at least I know who everyone is talking about

Melanie!

First Impression: I was hoping she would make a repeat appearance as soon as she first came with her statement, just because her and Jon had this ‘ten seconds away from a slap fight’ sibling energy that I genuinely enjoy. Plus, big fan of youtube ghost shows so….I definitely liked her.

Impression Now: I still like her as a character, though I have a hard time dealing with the season five developments. She’s not really my go to in terms of fic, but I enjoy her early canon appearances and I really liked her towards the end of season four.

Favorite Moment: I liked when she read the statement ‘Tucked In’ in season three! I like her narration, it’s a genuinely spooky tale (the blanket never did anything!!!) and the supplemental when she meets up with Jon.

Idea for a story: ghost hunt uk au when….i think georgie melanie and jon roommates au is a fun dynamic for that and I wanna write it, okay? I will write it, damnit. Eventually. Maybe.

Unpopular Opinion: I don’t know that I have any unpopular opinions of her, other than the fact that I was kind of upset at the walkback of ‘we could be friends’ at the end of season four. But, apocalypse happens. And then the anger’s back, but I really liked her character arc before that.

Favorite Relationship: I guess wtgfs? Though i think SashaMelanie is interesting, considering she was the only one who remembered her.

Favorite Headcanon: another more idea than headcanon, but georgie would often refer to ‘her ex from college’ and it was just a bunch of wildly conflicting comments/information so Melanie assumed there were several exs and when she finds out all of it was jon she has locks herself in her room for two days. How was she supposed to know that ‘stayed up for 72 hours watching exclusively david attenborough documentaries’ and ‘threw a brick through a church window so he could break in and rescue a cat’ and ‘lead singer of space pirate cabaret’ were all the same person??

all the people I ship romantically with this character: I mean, obvious answer is Georgie & I love wtgfs as a ship! also into sashamelanie, sasha/melanie/georgie, melanie/annabelle could be fun, also not so much ~romantic~ but I do think helen & melanie fucked at least once

my non-romantic otp for this character: interestingly enough I love all her interactions with all three of the s1 guys? I think she & jon are SUPER interesting parallels & I love how they’re friends but their friendship is exclusively on sight (Georgie has a Type). I love her & martin, mean gays unionize. I think she & tim could’ve had a really interesting dynamic too!

my unpopular opinion about this character: if I see another melanie/elias fic I will become an avatar of the slaughter myself, stop being fucking gross, love & light

one thing I wish had happened with this character in canon: I’m actually pretty content with her canon storyline! I was gonna jokingly say I wish jonny had let her kiss Georgie on-audio too but she canonically fucks so like, honestly I’m happy with her storyline. give us a scene of her petting the admiral maybe?
