My grandmother in Toronto passed last week. Thankfully, as we’re in Canada, it’s not quite as much of a nightmare to risk seeing people (in limited quantities) for funeral things, though Grandma, practical soul that she is/was, deemed ceremony unnecessary and just wanted to have a headstone next to my grandfather, and have her ashes scattered in various places dear to her.

Until recently, when dementia and all its associated memory issues took hold, she could remember the names of every one of her class in a tiny one-room school from the 1930s, before she saw my (20-years-older) grandfather and went, “I want that one,” and he, very sensibly and in total shock that she was even interested in him, said, “Yes, of course.”

She and her sister, my Auntie Mary, moved to Toronto from Sarnia shortly after Grandma got her teacher’s certificate (from the University of Western Ontario, or possibly Brescia, which was the women’s university -- I also attended Western and lived in the Brescia dorms), and roomed together. Mary was a pattern-drafter for The Hudson’s Bay Company, and Grandma and she were accomplished seamstresses, so many of the clothes they owned were made by them, and I benefited as a child -- I had so many hand-smocked dresses made by them.

Now, I’m tasked with packing up those clothes. I’m also hoping to scan more of her photographs -- she was often behind the camera, which means we have an amazing record of Grandpa’s wardrobe, his grins, his obvious love for his kids, and just how much my older brother takes after him.

Grandpa’s the guy with the lopsided grin in the back row, left side. Grandma’s the one in the cream/white coat in the front -- she was 5′1″ at the best of times, and Grandpa was 5′6″-ish, so both my brother and I did well at 5′8″ and 5′10″ respectively (he takes after Mum’s side of the family, I take after Dad’s; he got the better deal for mental stability and overall health, I pray I take after my South African grandmother). This is one of the rare photos where they’re both in frame; like I said, Grandma was often behind the camera, and boy did she know she had a good-looking husband, because so many of the photos are of him:

I’m sad that she’s gone. I keep getting hit by the sadness at odd points.Grandpa had Alzheimer’s and died over twenty years ago; I was apparently his favourite for as long as he remembered who I was, to the point where he didn’t want to let my mother leave with me. My memory of him is of a stocky man with a full head of steely gray hair, who was missing a ring finger, and was always twiddling his thumbs while he sat in his recliner at Grandma’s house.

Grandma... well. I can still hear the delight in her voice when I would call. “Oh, <name>!!!” she’d say, happily, “How ARE you? How is <current pet>??? When are you coming to visit???” I can still remember how much I had to stoop to hug her, whenever I visited past age 14. Her love of cheesecake, even when she wasn’t supposed to have it anymore. And, above all, her memory for the people captured in her photos, for the love put into sweaters, into dresses, and the endless worry when she babysat my brother and I because we were adventurous kids and she was not. I remember her terrible cooking (I vowed I would never overcook roast beef when I grew up) and her incredible kindness. She’s a woman who would have been happiest with five kids, but overflowed with love for the two she had.

I’m going to miss her, but I also know that Grandpa’s been waiting patiently for her wherever they believe they’ll meet, and he’ll be as surprised as ever when she spots him and goes, “That one, please.”

s a long, improbable road from childhood dreams on the local golf course in Sarnia, Ontario to winning the Masters, but Mike Weir has lived it, and in the process, has become a Canadian sports hero.

Like most young Canadians, Weir 1st dreamed of playing professional hockey, but his fate changed when he picked up his first golf club. His determination, first seen as he spent complete days in the summer hitting balls at Huron Oaks under the mentorship of Steve Bennett, and then later as a star on the Brigham Young University golf team, aided him achieve wonderful success in the early years of his professional career on the Canadian Tour, where he won Rookie of the Year Honours in 1993 and led the Order of Merit in 1997, before reaching the PGA Tour in 1998.

In 1999, Weir won his first PGA Tour title at the 1999 Air Canada Championship with a two-stroke victory previously mentioned Fred Funk, becoming the first Canadian to win on Tour since Richard Zokol won the 1992 Greater Milwaukee Open and the first Canadian to win on native soil since Pat Fletcher won the 1954 Canadian Open. In 2000, Weir became the first Canadian to play in the Presidentâ€

s Cup, where he led the international team with a 3-2-0 checklist. He was also named to the Presidentâ€

s Cup team in 2003 and 2005. Weir would go on to win 4 a lot more tournaments on the PGA Tour before the defining moment of his career to date at the 2003 Masters.

Weir emerged as one of the gameâ€

s brightest stars with his Masters victory, a dramatic playoff win over Len Mattiace, and came back to a heroâ€

s welcome in Canada, which included him dropping the ceremonial face-off at a Toronto Maple Leafs playoff game, the perfect ‘Canadian-styleâ€

celebration for the hockey fan Weir.

His breakthrough year on the PGA Tour earned him the 2003 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canadaâ€

s top athlete of the year and the Lionel Conacher Award, given to Canadaâ€

s top male athlete of the year, an award he previously won in 2000 and 2001.

Weir has used his success as a professional golfer as a platform for helping other families in want with the creation of the Mike Weir Foundation in 2004, and this year will see the launch of a national fundraising technique through his foundation, called the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids, supporting Childrenâ€

It's possible to be versatile. Interview with Bisi Alawode (part two)

What was the reason you decided to become a full-time photographer?

Becoming full-time photographer was more of my dream, when I was continuing my photography and started reading autobiographies, I realise that it's possible to be versatile. What I mean by that is that now it is possible to be more than one-way traffic. I read a lot of biographies of people and there was some person who was an architect, engineer and doctor just one single person. It means our brain is able to do so many things and can achieve success in all of them. So, I wanted more for myself. I wanted to focus on photography exploring all the possibilities there and at the same time been able to diversify into other areas. Because it makes me realise, that human's ability is endless. As long as you are able to sit down and focus on one thing you could achieve and become best in. So, for me to become a full-time photographer is just to explore one of my abilities and excel in that area. Mostly, I do wedding photography, but I am versatile enough to do other things. And that is one of the benefits of studying Digital Photography at Lambton College, I was able to learn different aspects of photography and I was able to showcase what I can create in different scenarios.

  Why you choose Canada for photography education?

I always wanted to come to Canada. I think Canada embodies my personal values as a person. Canada is a very strong nation that is very shy. This beautiful country has so many resources and so much potential and Canada have power under control and that is one of the reasons I choose Canada for studying photography.

How did Digital Photography Program at Lambton College help you to archive your goals in photography?

One big thing for me was the closeness of the class, the relationship I developed in the Digital Photography program and also the experiences of the professors, which helped me to become who I am today and I am always thankful to them. 

Do you think any specific area you should have paid attention to, while you were in college?

Maybe, web design will be that area I should have paid attention, But I got too much busy with other things. Just because I am someone who does not like sitting. I am always looking for new opportunities the affects the people around me. I should have learned web design, but at one point I lose the interest but no excuses.

Who influences/inspire you the most in photography? / Do you have a mentor?

Yes, I do have a mentor, I realise that mentorship is usually depended on in which area you want to grow. Then you could have a mentor in photography or mentor in life. Richard Beland is my mentor in photography and in life, my mentor is someone I look up to and speak to is my paster back in Nigeria. I am very close with him now and I travelled to Chicago from Sarnia three months ago to see him.
