Introduction
Hi! Call me Calli - it's short for my main handle, @callipraxia. That's a nonsense word which came about when I started trying to combine word roots in a way that sounded comprehensible, since I had the vague impression that was how screen names worked. Pretty sure I got it wrong, but so it goes. As stated in the blog summary, I had been keeping up with my reading in a notebook for a few years, but after keeping up with it for that long, I...still managed to finally lose the thing. Tumblr is, er, decidedly harder to misplace, so I decided to make a side blog as a replacement that I can put hyperlinks in, and now here I am.
Relevant facts about me in the event that anyone else reads this and wonders where I'm coming from: I'm a woman in my thirties, from the Southern United States, and I have a Master's degree in English education. I work in an education-related field, but I'm not a teacher. I own a lot of books, and most of them were acquired at Friends of the Library fill-a-bag sales, where, a few times a year, I can get as many books as I can persuade to fit inside a paper grocery bag for ten bucks. Between acquiring so many of my books that way, being a writer, and having a tendency to flit between intense interests at unpredictable intervals, my personal library is...eclectic, shall we say, so there's probably no real way to pin down a theme for this blog other than that it is, well, the things Calli reads. Most of it is nonfiction these days, but a solid month of YA novels is never out of the question and long digressions into RPG sourcebooks are actually pretty common at the moment. Just depends on what my brain's latched onto at any given time, really.

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Kayla Williams scored 21 points and California handed No. 19 Alabama its first loss 69-65 in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Thursday night. Ionna Krimili, who had 19 points, made three free throws in the last half minute to seal the win for the Golden Bears (8-1), who never led by more than six, when Krimili made two free throws with 26.6 seconds to play. Christabel Ezumah then made 1 of 2 from the line for Alabama, making it 68-63 with 19.1 seconds left but Krimili, who came in 25 of 28 from the line for the season, missed two free throws. Zaay Green scored inside for the Tide before Krimili missed her third straight free throw before icing the game with six seconds remaining. Marta Suarez added 16 points and six assists for Cal, which picked up its fourth win against a 2024 NCAA Tournament team and the highest-ranked win since beating #13 Arizona on March 1, 2020. The win is also the first against a ranked opponent since the Bears defeated #15 USC on Feb. 15, 2023 and gives Cal its best start to a season under head coach Charmin Smith. Green led Alabama (9-1) with 28 points, Essence Cody added 13 and Karly Weathers had 12. Cal was up 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but a 15-2 run put Alabama on top late in the second. Cody scored six points and Green had five. But the Bears scored the next eight points and trailed 32-25 at the half. Green and Cody both had 13 points.
Alabama was up 41-36 after Sarah Ashlee Baker's three-point play almost three minutes into the third quarter but then the Golden Bears reeled off 11 straight. Krimili had a 3-pointer to tie it and Suárez followed with a 3 for the lead. Williams scored the last seven points of the quarter for Cal for a 54-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter. With the Bears up by four with 1:32 left in the game, Jayda Noble made a key block to hold the Tide off. "This is a huge win for our program and what we have been fighting for," Smith said. "To have this opportunity in the SEC/ACC Challenge means a lot. It was a great game for Marta on both ends of the floor. And then Kayla making plays, hitting dagger threes and responding. These guys didn't hang their heads and they responded. That's the true sign of winners."

The growing Palisades fire — the area on fire is shown in orange — is threatening homes along Mandeville Canyon Road. Mandatory evacuation zones are colored red, which include MountainGate Country Club and swaths of Encino and Brentwood. Evacuation warning areas are in yellow, and include portions of Bel Air. (Cal-FIRE)
Excerpt from this LA Times story:
An epic aerial assault was underway Saturday as a fleet of aircraft worked to prevent the Palisades fire from hitting homes in Brentwood and Encino.
A shift in winds late Friday sent the fire north and east through the Santa Monica Mountains, forcing evacuations of Brentwood and the hills of Encino and Tarzana — keeping Los Angeles on edge in Day 5 of an unprecedented fire siege that has already damaged or destroyed more than 10,000 structures and killed at least 13 people.
All morning, firefighting helicopters and airplanes dropped water and fire retardant on fire lines not far from the 405 Freeway in an attempt to prevent flames from engulfing more neighborhoods. The drops seemed productive, but still, it appeared at least two remote hillside homes in Mandeville Canyon had burned, according to aerial footage on local TV stations.
The aircraft were cycling between the fire zone and the Encino Reservoir to refill with water, while firefighters on the ground were also assisting in the mission. During the worst of the firestorm Tuesday, the winds were so bad that air operations were suspended.
“We’re a nervous wreck,” said Sarah Cohen, 29, who lives with her parents in Braemar Country Club Estates, a gated community off Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana — just outside the evacuation zones. “Every time they drop water, it gets better. But then it gets worse again.”
The Palisades fire grew by about 1,000 acres late Friday into Saturday in the Mandeville Canyon area, officials said Saturday.
The sight of flames and smoke visible from across the region heightened anxiety across Los Angeles even though there were some signs of progress.
“Despite the flare-up, relentless air and ground assaults have led to increased containment,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said.
As of Saturday morning, the Palisades fire was 11% contained and the Eaton fire, which devastated much of Altadena and is now burning mostly in the San Gabriel Mountains, was 15% contained. On Friday, the Palisades fire was 8% contained and the Eaton fire was 3% contained.

top 5 albums (or artists) you’ve been listening to lately
good question! maybe it's the adhd but i feel like i don't listen to albums much anymore and i want to change that so here is a mixture:
the rise and fall of a midwest princess - did you know about this underground indie queer artist i'm sure i'm the only queer girl listening to this album in the last year. no but seriously this is one of the only albums i've fully listened to and loved recently i have to admit
escaper - sarah kinsley - @cal-daisies-and-briars told me about this one and it absolutely slaps. great use of string arrangements! particularly love last time we never meet again and knights
a variety of doechii songs but particularly off alligator bites never heal, denial is a river goes so hard
the magnetic fields' 69 love songs - particularly i don't want to get over you and i think i need a new heart. they should use these for buck's bisexual dating montages after eddie's in el paso
i finally properly listened to cowboy carter in full while i was putting my new bed frame together and yeah, that is an album of the year it's great!
bonus: another cal rec, cruel nature by RIP dunes (eddie diaz ass song) i listened to this a lot last year
thank you! <3 <3

9 Fandom Peeps to Get to Know Better
Tagged by @voidcat-senket
3 Ships I Like: surprising no one: spyscrapper (Bode/Cal); Aloy/Kotallo (but am perfectly happy with Aloy/Seyka too); Finn/Poe/Rey
First Ship Ever: I drew fanart for the Phantom of the Opera musical before I knew what fanart was, but I don't think I really shipped Erik/Christine at the time. I also drew art of the various Disney Renaissance princesses and their princes around the same time (late 80s to early 90s); think lots of Belle/Beast and Jasmine/Aladdin. The first ship I wrote fanfic for (a fixit, of course) was for Max/Liz from the 1999 Roswell tv show. Then I just...neglected to write about any characters until I found the spyscrapper community, almost exactly twenty years after writing that Roswell fic.
Last Song You Heard: "Clarity" by John Mayer, as spun by my Random Writing Music playlist on Spotify.
Favorite Childhood Book: Flute Song Magic by Amanda Shettle gave me a different perspective on life. Self-Portrait with Wings by Susan Green is wish fulfillment with all its attendant problems. I also got a hold of Robin Hobbs' Assassin's Apprentice much earlier in life than I probably should have, and thinking back on it make me realize it might have shaped how I turned out. The Forever King by Molly Cochran and Warren Murphy gave me a lifelong love of Authuriana.
Currently Reading: Just finished The Nightmare Before Kissmas by Sarah Raasch (alas for books coming off hold at the library after their season has passed), very good, quite spicy and not just fluffy! Now trying to make a little more headway in my Stormlight Archive reread before book 2 expires from the library in a few days (can't renew it because it's on hold for others; will have to read it the old fashioned way with my hardcover copy and only read at home because I'm not schlepping the 1000+ page behemoth to work, until the ebook becomes available again)
Currently Watching: What If, sorta. We don't tend to watch a whole lot of tv so it's taking a long time to get through the final season. I broke down and bought myself the first two seasons of AMC's Interview With the Vampire, because I missed the last two episodes of S2 when they aired and I wasn't going to buy another streaming service just for those. Based on the fanart that's going around I feel like I should watch Arcane but the sobbing emojis I've seen make me worry.
Currently Consuming: leftovers.
Currently Craving: Detroit style pizza.

You said you loved Orphan Black overall, but what are things that you would have changed about it?
Oh, hm, anon.
The thing is, I loved the show and its emotional core despite its flaws as it delivered one of the most unique sci-fi stories on television.
All in all, they did a good job balancing so many characters, but maybe with more time or maybe fewer plot threads, they could have polished some of the rougher edges there.
Let me think.
Everything about Paul was weak. Maybe a different actor would have worked better, but he did nothing for me as Sarah's love interest. He was bland and boring. I kept yawning during his scenes. Art, as much as I love him as Sarah's bro (and in retrospect I'm glad they didn't shoehorn another romance there) would have been a better choice despite the fact that he was in love with Beth. And given that they later confirmed that Sarah is bi? Why not make Paul a woman instead?
I love Michael Mando, but the way his character was written leaves something to be desired. Full of stereotypes.
Better pacing for some of the seasons. I personally liked season 5 very much, but a few more episodes were needed. 13 instead of 10 would have helped with Rachel's redemption, Helena's flashbacks and the final takedown of Neolution.
Like I said, as much as I adore Rachel, her arc could have gone way deeper. (It's unfair that I keep comparing her to Helena Eagan, who's a protagonist, but I can't help it.) The second half of the final season redeemed her, sure, but it felt rushed.
Helena’s childhood and traumas were fascinating but also somewhat rushed in later seasons. Her backstory could have been explored more.
Since they decided to include male clones, they should have given them more nuance and utilized them to say something more poignant about the military. With the exception of Mark and Ira, the Castor clones were rape-y caricatures. Hard pass.
Incorporating Marion Bowles. She disappeared for some reason in season 3 although she was a major power player in season 2.
The fandom is thankfully dead so I won't be killed for this one, but they should have made Delphine more interesting. I'm sure that had I watched the show as it was airing, I would have been all over Cosima/Delphine, but as it is...Delphine kept making me zone out even when she went full Rachel mode in season 3. That being said, I found their reunion touching in late season 4--especially since I knew the context (fans were mad af that another queer character was killed off).
Bringing back Angela Deangelis. I thought that detective was funny and had the potential to switch sides and help Art and the clone club.
As funny as I find Krystal, I wish she had been given more development.
MK and the Helsinki thingy. Wanted more of that. Especially given how brutal MK's murder was. (I still maintain the opinion that Rachel should have subverted the "powerful woman (almost) dies violently by a guy for being morally ambiguous" and murdered Ferdinand. Not just send him to his death like she did, but grab something while he's choking her and stab/hit him, then call Siobhan to deal with the body. Of course, that would have prevented Siobhan's death, which was very well-written and emotional so checkmate there.)
Bringing back Tony. I found it tokenistic that the gay trans clone was introduced and disappeared after, like, 2 episodes. At least, they mentioned him in the finale.
Cal should have been mentioned by Kira in the finale (and I'm saying this as a viewer that could not care less about him). He's her dad.
Kira's psychic connection to the clones was introduced early but never fully explained.
Neolution's motivations were a little murky and convoluted. Again, I loved season 5, but I think that PT would have carried more punch as the ultimate villain had he been introduced earlier.
Not a criticism, but it would have been nice if we had seen more of Ethan and Susan during their OG scientist days and how their experiment evolved. As it is, I dgaf that Ethan killed himself. Especially since he did it in front of Rachel to punish her for being a product of her upbringing.

For Cal and Kent:
failure: What's your OC's greatest failure? Have they been able to move past it? Does anyone else know about it?
I love you for this one, friend; thank you <3 (do keep in mind I'm still working this kind of thing out for my various children, but I'm feeling strongly about both of these)
Caelum 'Cal' Sokół: There is a Damn Good Reason why I personally believe TWST took at least a little influence from Treasure Planet's Jim Hawkins for the characterization of Deuce: they're both mechanically inclined mama's boys with emotional baggage and a rebel streak they're trying to redeem.
Cal is much the same way, though with some additional issues that are decidedly Not Helped by his outlook on life nor the actions of certain individuals (including himself). One of the bigger differences is that at least Delia Spade & Sarah Hawkins are around to see their boys get better and talk them through it when they doubt themselves...
Kentigern Vaughan: I have yet to come up with any one specific failure that Kent is guilty of so much as I believe the lad carries quite the load on his shoulders. He's quite literally been the King of his hometown since age 12 (not without counsel, mind you, but it's ultimately his ass on the throne), so he feels immense pressure to do right by his people. He's a good boy and at least a decent king, but there's still a little Welt (childhood 'nickname'; he will not elaborate further unless he considers you a friend) naivety in the lad. Both: Neither of them openly expresses these feelings they have with anyone, though it's for different reasons.
Kent doesn't do it because he 'thinks' everyone knows and many are simply not saying anything to spare his feelings.
Cal doesn't do it because he 'knows' no one cares and many are frankly not afraid to say it to his face.

#22 Cal Blanks #16 Pitt 1-0
Bears Win ACC Home Opener
Dimry Nets First Career Goal
BERKELEY – The No. 22 California women's soccer team became the first Cal program to win an ACC contest on home soil, defeating No. 16 Pitt 1-0 Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Sophomore forward Soleil Dimry provided the game-winning goal in the 47th minute, the first score of her career. It was a day of firsts for the Golden Bears (9-1-2, 2-0-1) who earned their first ACC shutout and first ranked win of the season in the program's inaugural conference home opener. Cal has now won eight of its last nine matches and has gone 10 straight contests without a loss. Pitt (7-3-1, 1-2-0) won the shot battle 11-3 and put five shots on goal, but Golden Bear goalkeeper Teagan Wy kept a clean sheet in her first game back from a bronze medal performance with Team USA at the U20 FIFA Women's World Cup. The junior collected a season-high five saves, including a couple of highlight, game-saving efforts.
After taking just one shot in the first half, the Bears sent out a more offensive-centered lineup to start the second half with senior Velize King and Dimry hitting the field first. Dimry, who has missed a lot of time this year due to injury and did not play a single minute in the first period, wasted no time providing her team with some offense in the 47th minute. King beat the Pitt defense down the right touchline and centered it for Dimry who fired it into the bottom left corner of the goal. The shot rolled just past diving Pitt keeper Ellie Breech and into the net giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
King now ranks second on the team with three assists on the year and third with seven points. The entire match was a physical battle, and the pace picked up even more following Cal's early second-half score. The Panthers got off six shots and had a handful of solid looks, none more than Sarah Schupansky's rifle of a shot from outside of the 18-yard box with under two minutes to play. The Pitt senior forward curled a ball perfectly towards the upper right corner of the Cal goal with her left foot, but had her chance foiled by Wy who made an incredible leaping save.
The Bears are back at Edwards Stadium this Sunday for a matchup with the Miami Hurricanes. Kick off is set for 1 PM on ACC Network Extra.

Alright, Round 3 because I was supposed to be writing something else but I crashed and burned for a bit. So, hear me out please:
-
Linda-058 likes to sneak up on her partner when they're not aware and hug them from behind. She tends to do this at the end of the day in your quarters, usually when you're so busy or stressed or when you're occupied with something else that you never see or hear her coming. She lives for the delight on your face when you turn to see her, and she can feel your heartbeat through her chest while she places her chin on your shoulder. It makes her day.
-
Kelly-087 likes to steal her partner's food. She swears that it just tastes better than her food when you catch her. It doesn't matter if it's the same MRE, the same food from the mess, or food you packed yourself, she will steal it. The first time you packed her the same lunch as you and brought it to her at the start of the day, Fred could've sworn she was skipping for the rest of the day.
-
The fastest way to fluster Cal-141 is to unexpectedly hold her hand. It's adorable how she has to confirm that it's your hand in hers and then pretend to not be excited that you are. Sometimes, she forgets where she is and just stares at your conjoined hands in wonder and daydreams of what life after the war would be like for the both of you. It makes fighting this war worth it if she gets to see that wintery cabin in her dreams become reality.
-
It's easy for Sarah Palmer to forget that, beneath the armor and rank, that she's human too. She often goes for long periods without sleep and pushes herself to be the very best for every soul under her command and on the Infinity. It's only with her partner that she truly lets her vulnerable side free. After one particularly stressful day, you had suggested she take a break and slow dance with you. It was in your arms, swaying to the music with her head to your chest, that she found peace. It's the little moments at the end of the day that make she lives for.
When I say I'm screaming and kicking my feet, I really am. OMG THOSE ARE SO CUTE! I love seeing you in my inbox. You are giving me every reason to make a Sarah Palmer relationship headcanons post. I'm tempted to link these on my masterlist if you're okay with it.
I think seeing the delight on her partner's face makes Linda feel so loved. Like she's more than a Spartan, a feeling she didn't realize she enjoyed until you.
All I imagine is Kelly running through the ship with her lunch above her head in utter delight. But also I agree with Kelly, stealing your partner's food always tastes better. This habit soon develops in you two sharing different meals, like you get one thing and Kelly gets another, then split it between you too and Kelly still steals off your plate.
It grounds Cal when she feels her partner's hand in hers. It's like a warmth that pulls her back to reality no matter how far her mind has traveled. And if you ever kiss her hand while holding it, Cal.exe has stopped working. She's also one to think about the future together even though she knows she shouldn't.
Sarah has slowly realized she can't pull rank on her partner because you just look at her with a 'try again' expression and continue to pull her out of her workaholic phase. Honestly, acts of service are her language, anytime her partner cares for her, brings her coffee, and genuinely just asks how her day is going or to tell them about her day, she feels so loved. AS SHE SHOULD
