In spite of the heated water that surrounds you, you find it difficult to relax. Your thoughts have been long elsewhere - traveling down the worn stone wall behind you, and around the sloped bend at the end of the spring.

To the other side, where he bathes.

The waters are shared, and there’s an intimacy in that. Fueling the acute knowledge that if you wanted to, you could follow the flow of water. To take that curve.

You won’t, though. He trusts you not to, and even that is a gift.

But it doesn’t keep your mind from wandering. Imaging the slow removal of armor, piece by piece. The slow unfurling until he’s just flesh and bone and a steady, beating heart.

It sends your own racing - eyes shut as your head dips back against the stone. Focusing on the quiet sound of limbs moving through water, the soft hum of a relaxed groan. Leaving you to wonder if he’s thinking of you.

You think he must be. It’s there in those hidden moments, stolen away in the ship. The press of his forehead against yours as if he’s imagining - just for a moment - what it might be like to see you with his own eyes.

And even if he never can, it doesn’t mean he isn’t yours. It’s his creed that binds him, not his heart. You know that right now - if you called out his name - he would always answer. Just like you would do for him.

And that is enough.

something inside him softens, as it often did when he was with you. certain of one thing among many…

walking to dinner had seemed like a great idea until now. trapped together beneath the eaves of the little shop you ducked under - hands shading eyes as you gaze up at the cracked sky above you.

“sorry, darling,” klaue is murmuring in your ear. acutely aware of the desire that thrums inside you from wandering hands at dinner, for it courses through him as well.

there’s a beat, before you’re stepping out onto the sidewalk. a smile thrown from over your shoulder, before you’re holding your hand out for him.

“why?” you ask, as the rain drips against your skin - easing the heat of summer. it’s no burden - you’re only going home, after all. “i’ve always liked the rain. don’t you?”

“something like that.” he answers, though his eyes aren’t on the sky above, or the patter on the concrete. those blue eyes fixed solely you.

only a heartbeat passes, before his hand fits into yours.
