2021 Horror Challenge: [20/?]

Plot: A YouTuber who craves shocking stories realizes she has made a mistake when she meets a serial killer in a cabin.

Starring: Mark Duplass, Desiree Akhavan & Karan Soni

20th watch of the challenge and I think this was a win for the most part! It’s effectively creepy and I was more invested with this one. I think in part because I like how more proactive Desiree Akhavan’s character felt in this, which is why it feels like The Creep met his match in her. If the first one lacked subtlety, this one definitely does as well but it works here because we already know Mark Duplass’s character is a psycho. lol They start off from the jump to show that his behavior is escalating from boredom and wants a challenge with his murders after killing his latest victim sooner than he wanted to. So, he invites Sara and lays out all his cards in front of her, which I thought was totally wild. I’m like, there’s no way she’s getting out of this one alive, right? He admitted to being a serial killer to 39 deaths! But she hangs in there, despite this admission (could not be me!!!) and agrees to film him. I kinda loved how hard she was making it for him to unnerve her, despite him trying his best to scare her the whole time. I think he begins to admire her and it’s why he challenges her to kill him. And yet, despite everything that he’s said or done, she wants no part in doing that. Because she doesn’t believe he’s a serial killer, just a really weird dude. And well, like any normal person, she doesn’t want to kill someone. lol Which is why I think he switches gears and lies that he’s not a killer in an effort to make her feel comfortable and that throws her off her game slightly before a nail-biting confrontation. I’m curious how a third movie would come into play because this feels like a natural end. (To show he’s still alive and gonna continue to stalk people)  It’s interesting to hear that Duplass and Brice thought this movie could have been better, even tho the general consensus (at least according to Rotten Tomatoes over IMDB lol) is that its superior to its predecessor. And at least looking at it from an entertainment standpoint, I think I have to agree. Like I said, I couldn’t stop watching even when I was cringing. These movies are effective at that. Made me kinda excited for the challenge again. I like being surprised so it’s a win.
