New Scotland Yard: Perfect in Every Way (1.9, LWT, 1972)
"You come here and you tell me my... dear man is dead. Your friend is dead, a good man - a good man, that's what they always tell me - you come here and you say he's dead, and, and 'Who did it? Oh, we must find out who did it, we're all good policemen!'... You're ruthless. Like he was."
"You don't mean that."
"Oh, he was a good man, wasn't he? Well, that's just what he wasn't. He was never allowed to be, he was a policeman! A perfect officer of the law, morning, afternoon, evening and night. Sometimes he wouldn't speak to me for weeks, we - we lived a terrible, terrible life."

Carlisle continues to be an odd fish#his character is just so... unlikeable frankly. he's deeply sarcastic and outright hostile to Kingdom here‚ and whilst Woodvine has been#allowed over the series to gradually breathe some humanity into his lead‚ Carlisle's character remains a cold‚ hard bastard#the final act lets this down just a little‚ an overly on the nose and vaguely patronising examination of a disturbed mind which ends with#Kingdom sermonizing on how 'killing is never clever' and sounding weirdly like a high school assembly. but elsewhere this is smartly#written and unafraid of interrogating the often ugly nature of a police officer's private life

Z Cars - Family (3 June 1974)
Z Cars was a long running British TV show focused on the police force patrolling a fictional Merseyside town called Newtown which ran between 1962 and 1978. Though much of the show has been unseen since it's original transmission (with over half of the episodes now sadly missing from the archives), Talking Pictures TV's current fragmented reruns of surviving 1970s episodes have been a golden chance to see these rarely seen episodes.
Family, written by Bill Lyons sees DC Skinner (Ian Cullen) receiving information from a snout about an upcoming bank robbery. One of the names mentioned is Stan Giles (Cyril Varley) who has been struggling financially since leaving prison, living in poverty on an obviously run-down estate with his wife Brenda (Maryann Turner) and daughter Susan (Sara Clee), forming the family of the title. It is not a happy family with Stan at odds with his daughter who while afraid of him is prepared to defy him and encourages her mother to stand up to him instead of weakly submitting.
Stan has been hired by his former partner in crime Lennie Bowles (Kenneth Colley) who when younger learnt much from Stan, but has since then become a lot more successful and is living a more comfortable life in London and this, coupled with his boasting about his new lifestyle while mocking Stan's poverty makes Stan resentful of him.
With the bank robbery due to go ahead with Skinner and Inspector Bert Lynch (James Ellis) ready to arrest the robbers, an unexpected spanner is thrown in the works by PC Quilley (Douglas Fielding) who, responding to a report of an attempted car theft where the thief left instead with the victim's watch ends up arresting Stan shortly before the robbery is due to take place...
This episode starts off slowly but gets better as the robbery nears and with Quilley's arrest of Stan providing the first twist in the tail, there's also another good twist at the end and there is no neat resolution here, with the ultimate outcome of Stan's arrest and the robbery still up in the air by the episode's conclusion, a good episode overall.

Quirky Character You’ll Love: Book Recommendations
Finn Fancy Necromancy by Randy Henderson
Writers of the Future grand prize winner Randy Henderson presents a dark and quirky debut in Finn Fancy Necromancy. Finn Gramaraye was framed for the crime of dark necromancy at the age of 15, and exiled to the Other Realm for twenty five years. But now that he's free, someone-probably the same someone-is trying to get him sent back. Finn has only a few days to discover who is so desperate to keep him out of the mortal world, and find evidence to prove it to the Arcane Enforcers. They are going to be very hard to convince, since he's already been convicted of trying to kill someone with dark magic. But Finn has his family: His brother Mort who is running the family necrotorium business now, his brother Pete who believes he's a werewolf, though he is not, and his sister Samantha who is, unfortunately, allergic to magic. And he's got Zeke, a fellow exile and former enforcer, who doesn't really believe in Finn's innocence but is willing to follow along in hopes of getting his old job back.
Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine Meet Eleanor Oliphant: she struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding unnecessary human contact, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen, the three rescue one another from the lives of isolation that they had been living. Ultimately, it is Raymond’s big heart that will help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one. If she does, she'll learn that she, too, is capable of finding friendship—and even love—after all. Smart, warm, uplifting, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . . the only way to survive is to open your heart.
The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald, Alice Menzies (Translator)
Once you let a book into your life, the most unexpected things can happen... Broken Wheel, Iowa, has never seen anyone like Sara, who traveled all the way from Sweden just to meet her pen pal, Amy. When she arrives, however, she finds that Amy's funeral has just ended. Luckily, the townspeople are happy to look after their bewildered tourist—even if they don't understand her peculiar need for books. Marooned in a farm town that's almost beyond repair, Sara starts a bookstore in honor of her friend's memory. All she wants is to share the books she loves with the citizens of Broken Wheel and to convince them that reading is one of the great joys of life. But she makes some unconventional choices that could force a lot of secrets into the open and change things for everyone in town. Reminiscent of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, this is a warm, witty book about friendship, stories, and love.
The First Bad Man by Miranda July
From the acclaimed filmmaker, artist, and bestselling author of No One Belongs Here More Than You, a spectacular debut novel that is so heartbreaking, so dirty, so tender, so funny--so Miranda July--readers will be blown away. Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. She is haunted by a baby boy she met when she was six, who sometimes recurs as other people's babies. Cheryl is also obsessed with Phillip, a philandering board member at the women's self-defense non-profit where she works. She believes they've been making love for many lifetimes, though they have yet to consummate in this one. When Cheryl's bosses ask if their twenty-one-year-old daughter Clee can move into her house for a little while, Cheryl's eccentrically-ordered world explodes. And yet it is Clee--the selfish, cruel blond bombshell--who bullies Cheryl into reality and, unexpectedly, provides her the love of a lifetime. Tender, gripping, slyly hilarious, infused with raging sexual fantasies and fierce maternal love, Miranda July's first novel confirms her as a spectacularly original, iconic and important voice today, and a writer for all time. The First Bad Man is dazzling, disorienting, and unforgettable.

The Brothers: Errors Of Judgement (2.8, BBC, 1973)
"That business about union membership has been sorted out."
"Maybe."
"The men accepted our proposals and went back to work."
"Oh, there was a majority in favour, aye. Not a very big one, though. There's a lot of ill feeling still. If there was any more trouble..."
"Well why should there be any trouble? We did everything we could to solve it!"
"Nothing was solved, Mr. Hammond. It were just swept under the carpet, out of sight. And that's not the same thing."

J. Crisp#A crucial episode in that it sets in motion both the shorter ongoing plot (another strike..) and the longer issue of the Hammonds financial#Woes and the complications that will ensue as they try to solve their debts. Its also a good Ann episode as she does the rounds and tests#The water for a potential reunion with Brian (whether he wants one or not). The highlight is her conference with Ted; the two characters#Are hardly ever in the same room let alone one on one so it's fascinating to see how they interact outside the social niceties demanded by#A larger family engagement. Ted in particular is much more blunt and much more direct than we would normally see him if Brian or David were#Also present. What shines through is that both Ted and Ann actually have a better understanding of one another than might be expected.

books i read in 2018
this year reading wise has been very odd for me. on one hand, i was finishing off my postgrad studies, including my dissertation, so i felt like i had very little time to read. that said, i found i was able to very quickly and easily read ebooks, specifically romance ones. because of this i actually managed to read a total of 106 books in 2018, which is far more than i expected to be able to given everything i had going on this year.
in terms of the actual books themselves, there’s not a lot of variety here - i read a few mysteries and thrillers and some other books, but the vast majority that i read were romance novels, particularly regency era ones. as for the goodreads challenge, i set myself a goal of reading 1 book, which i had managed to do on the 1st of january 2018. i will be doing the same thing this year. doing this relieved so much pressure on me. when i went into any kind of reading slump, i never felt guilty about it because i had already met my target.
i hope that in 2019, without the additional academic pressure, i will be able to read a similar amount this year but with greater variety in terms of genre. i would like to get back out of my comfort zones as i did when i first started doing the goodread challenges.
books i really enjoyed this year were most of the ones i read by tessa dare, who i found to be really easy and engaging to read. i also loved everything i read by lynn messina, who was very similar in tone and content to tessa dare. both of them have some really lovely regency romances that were very fun to read, and i would recommend if that’s your thing. on the more modern end of the romance scale, i really enjoyed mariana zapata’s books this year too.
so here are the books i read in 2018. my favourites are in bold, with my absolute favourite italicised as well, rereads ware in italics, and any with an * beside them were read for academic purposes.
her cherry by penelope bloom
his banana by penelope bloom
blood harvest by sharon bolton
managed by kristen callihan
wrong number, right guy by elle casey
hallowe’en party by agatha christie

The Brothers: Storm Birds (2.9, BBC, 1973)
"I think it's time you faced a few facts!"
"Oh? Alright, let's have them."
"You work for Hammonds now - at least, theoretically."
"What d'you mean, theoretically?"
"I mean that I doubt if you put in more than three hours a day, and I'm damned if I know what you even do during those three hours!"

The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes: The Secret Of The Fox Hunter (2.10, Thames, 1973)
"Oh dear, now you're talking as a governess."
"Mr. Drew, I am talking as an Englishwoman!"
"I beg your pardon."
#the rivals of sherlock holmes#rivals rewatch#rivals spoilers#william drew#duckworth drew#william le queux#derek jacobi#richard pearson#lisa harrow#simon gough#denise coffey#peter arne#sara clee#peter eyre#richard warner#karin maccarthy#david tate#kenneth barrow#clifford parrish#i always thought it was duckworth drew but he goes by william here#the only thing i remembered about this was the rather dramatic ending which is unusually dark for the show#jacobi is very good but honestly the mvp here is denise coffey#her excellent miss baines deserved a series in her own right#and delivers most of the best lines#this one seems to be played for laughs for much of the episode#highlighting the hypocrisy of upper class english sensibilities in the world of espionage#but then that ending pulls the rug right out from under you
