90% of SAP Implementations are Vulnerable to New SAP Vulnerability

For the most part, SAP implementations continue to be affected by vulnerability in the security configuration initially documented in 2005, information security experts warn.

Analysts comment that careless security configurations and unintended derivations of previously protected system configurations make SAP implementations vulnerable despite the release of security notes designed to address issues. According to Onapsis information security researchers, 90% of SAP systems were vulnerable to this error.

This vulnerability affects SAP Netweaver and can be exploited by an unauthenticated remote attacker who has access to the system network. By attacking this vulnerability, one could obtain unrestricted access to the system, being able to compromise the platform and all the information it contains, extract data or turn off the system.

The vulnerability affects all versions of SAP Netweaver. Since SAP Netweaver is the foundation of SAP implementations, 378,000 customers worldwide are affected, researchers say. The vulnerability exists within the default security configuration in each SAP product based on Netweaver. Even the next generation digital business suite S / 4HANA is affected.

The information security researchers of Onapsis explain in a report where the vulnerability is detailed, that a protection scheme through ACL (access control list) ensures that the SAP application servers are registered within the SAP Message Server to function. This record is made using the internal port 39 <xx> (3900 by default), SAP explained in a Security Note that the port must be secure and only accessible by the IP addresses of the trusted application.

The ACL of the message server is designed to verify “which IP addresses can be registered by an application server and which ones are not”; it is controlled by a profile parameter (ms / acl_info) that must contain a path to a file with a specific format. SAP published the details on how to correctly configure this access file in a Security Note.

“However, this parameter is configured with the default configuration, as well as with the contents of the ACL open, this allows any host with access to the network to the SAP Message Server to register an application server in the SAP system,” explain information security professionals of Onapsis.

At the time of exploiting the lack of a secure configuration of the message server ACL in an SAP system, an attacker can register a fake application server, which could then be abused to achieve total system compromise through attacks more complex.

Professionals comment that, for an attack to be successful, an actor needs to take advantage of this incorrect configuration: access to the internal port of the Message Server with a default configuration in the ACL. This tells us that proper ACL configuration of SAP Message Server should mitigate the risks associated with the attack.

JP Perez-Etchegoyen, CTO of Onapsis, commented that “This year attention will be devoted to new vulnerabilities, such as IoT, Meltdown and Spectre; there is a more silent threat to the lurking that can be so serious and so wide. So interconnected and complex that disconnecting a system to implement a secure configuration can be very disruptive to the organization. It is essential that organizations make sure they take the time to implement the configuration. These updates should be planned and scheduled to have the least impact on the organization.”

Information security researchers recommend that organizations implement continuous controls and compliance checks in order to ensure that the relevant configurations do not affect the security posture of the system, as well as to execute an SAP security program that helps close the breach between the devices.

Announcing the release of SAP Predictive Analytics 3.3

We are delighted to announce the release of SAP Predictive Analytics 3.3. This new release is available for download on SAP Software Center.   Python API for Automated Analytics Automated Analytics provides a set of machine learning functions such as classification, regression, key influencers, clustering, forecasting, recommendation and link analysis to easily answer business questions with no need for extensive training or data science skills. Python is an open-source programming language widely used within the data science community. Through its Python API, SAP Predictive Analytics 3.3 allows developers to build powerful machine learning applications. They can now use Python as a scripting language to create, train, debrief and apply automated models. The new API makes automated functions available not only within a Python script but also within a web-based interactive computational environment like the Jupyter Notebook.   Publish Predictive Models to SAP Business Applications Predictive Factory is a web-based application that simplifies, accelerates and automates the predictive modeling process. Predictive Analytics integrator (PAi) is a framework for applications built on SAP HANA to use and manage predictive models. It is a component of SAP Predictive Analytics. With version 3.3, Predictive Factory users can seamlessly publish customized classification and regression models to a PAi server for integration into SAP business applications such as SAP Fraud Management or SAP S/4HANA Sourcing and Procurement.   Data Privacy Support SAP Predictive Analytics 3.3 comes with security features and specific data-protection functions to support compliance with the relevant legal requirements and data privacy. Predictive Factory delivers new capabilities to implement a data retention policy and limit the accumulation of unnecessary data storage. Administrators can schedule the automatic daily deletion of data. A new log file helps them trace data deletion activity. Administrators can also keep track of active user accounts and user access to forecast and signal analysis data.   Other Features Before you go and download the 3.3 release let’s see other features it brings. SAP Transportation Management with S/4HANA 1709

It’s a compelling offering for shipper industries, combining best-in-class, proven transportation management capabilities with the benefits of the S/4HANA system. Watch our video – I talked to @PeterFlensberg, Chief Product Owner SAP Transportation Management, on highlights in SAP TM in S/4HANA 1709: SAP Transportation Management (SAP TM): A Winning Solution A few years ago, we launched our new SAP Transportation Management solution (SAP TM) – uniting both transportation planning and execution processes in one, advanced, state-of-the-art solution. Our clear strategy and continuous, strong investment quickly established SAP TM as the leading transportation management system in the market. Today, SAP TM is a world-class solution with complete, end-to-end transportation process support – from strategic freight management, order management, transportation planning, booking, tendering and subcontracting, through to freight execution, costing, settlement, analytics and reporting. It is really an impressive offering! We have developed SAP TM to successively support different market segments, starting with shippers, then logistic service providers and carriers. And our powerful freight planning capabilities cover domestic, international, multi-mode and multi-stage shipment planning across inbound, outbound, and intercompany freight! Thankfully, I can say that this strategy was right and our strong investment paid off. Today, SAP TM has approximately 700 customers around the globe, across all relevant industries and market segments. It is a great testament to hear how SAP TM is helping so many companies improve process efficiency, real-time visibility and ultimately reduce freight costs. Given this success, it was an obvious next step to make this winning solution also available in SAP’s new generation enterprise resource management system, S/4HANA. Embedded SAP TM in S/4HANA: What is it? SAP TM in S/4HANA provides our customers with a deployment alternative. Our strategy is to deliver a common core – developing one code-line for transportation management – and delivering this for different deployment options for customer’s needs. What does this mean? Formerly, SAP TM was only available as an add-on solution, that could be run either standalone or together with warehousing, as part of the SAP Supply Chain Execution platform. This deployment option is particularly interesting for companies running separate ERP (ECC) instances for divisions/subsidiaries, yet want to centralize and consolidate logistics planning and execution management. Today, SAP Transportation Management is also delivered as an embedded solution in S/4HANA – SAP’s new enterprise resource management suite. It’s a smart, strategic move to make our proven transportation software, and the continuous innovation here, also available in a centrally-deployed ERP suite. This first release for SAP TM embedded in S/4HANA, leverages our core capabilities for shipper industries.   SAP TM in SAP S/4HANA 1709: What’s in it for you? SAP S/4HANA 1709 has a compelling value proposition for shippers. Leveraging the world-class TM solution with the latest innovations Because it is leveraging the same TM code line – you get all the core, proven capabilities from SAP TM developments to date, as well as the new 2017 innovations – all in the first release embedded in S/4HANA! For example, you benefit from recent innovations, such as the Gantt chart–based planning, optimization planning with package building, load consolidation and 3D load planning, driver management etc. You also have the new SAP TM 9.5 shipper-relevant innovations built-in. Here, we deliver important enhancements in general usability, performance optimization (i.e. faster vehicle scheduling and routing, load consolidation planning etc.), as well as round-offs for manual planning, air and ocean freight management, charge management and industry-specific enhancements (i.e. flexible stop duration for retail). The additional benefits of a single, unified system With S/4HANA, you have a simplified system landscape – one system – with a common user experience across all business areas. As both SAP Extended Warehouse Management and SAP Transportation Management are now embedded in S/4HANA, we support end-to-end logistics processes. These solutions are also seamlessly integrated with S/4HANA supply chain, procure-to-pay and order-to-cash processes to enable end-to-end planning and execution across product development, manufacturing, quality, warehousing, and transportation. Companies can also leverage new capabilities for transportation that are made available via the central S/4HANA platform. For example, you can use the data modelling infrastructure (and Core Data Services (CDS) views) for embedded analytics in S/4HANA TM.
