1940s vs. 2015. San Jose, CA. On W. Santa Clara Street between Almaden Boulevard and the Guadalupe Freeway (Hwy 87) overpass, looking east-northeast. Over the years, the city of San Jose has done a wonderful job of restoring and maintaining historic buildings. However, the addition of numerous skyscrapers has diluted the impact of these historic buildings. Some are difficult to find and others are obscured. For example, in the 1940s photo above, Hotel De Anza and the Bank of America building, including its distinctive Spanish spire tower, are clear. In the 2015 photo, however, Hotel De Anza is barely visible due to the presence of the CWFG National Title/Comerica Bank building (with the blue awnings) and the stand of palm trees; only a portion of the pink exterior and the letters H, T, D, and E on the “HOTEL DE ANZA” sign are visible. The Bank of America building further down the street can only be identified by the cream exterior and the red tile roof; the Spanish spire tower is obscured.

1986 vs. 2015. San Jose, CA. On W. Santa Clara Street, near the intersection of W. Santa Clara and Market Streets, looking northeast. The 1986 photo shows a group of men and women walking along W. Santa Clara Street (and approaching Market Street). They were participating in the 1986 Y-Walk, one of two annual events created by YWCA Executive Director Faith Rein and President Sarah Janigian to raise public awareness and money for YWCA programs. (The other event was TWIN – Tribute to Women and Industry.) Some of them are carrying balloons and some are wearing tee shirts that read: "Walk for women. YWCA 1986." They are walking past a building with a sign on it that reads: "Barclays Bank," which is now Umbrella Salon. The white building with the three-arch facade, just beyond Barclays Bank, is the San Jose Savings and Loan Association building. It is now Gold Club, a gentlemen’s club. One block away across the street is the historic Bank of America brick building. The street lamp and the tree may be the exact same ones in both photos.
The 1986 photo is courtesy of the San Jose State University Library Special Collections and Archives.
