Ariadne explaining how to navigate the labyrinth (and after) to Theseus. It’s important, she’s committing treason for you Theseus, don’t look at her like that.
#ariadne#theseus#greek mythology#I read the labyrinth myth over the weekend again and have Thoughts#hc Ariadne makes Really Good string theory boards#she’s a good planner too! as long as everything goes well being queen of athens would hopefully shield her from Mino’s wrath… right?#my art#can you tell I gave up on Theseus lmao#it’s been a productive few days arting :]#sanskart (mythos)

“My hair is Holy,
I grow it for the god.”
- Bacchae, Euripedes
Hair in the Bacchae is like a really minor thing but I was plagued by this vision the whole afternoon!! I need to banish these scenes from my head and work on my actual research subjects or I’ll go insane fr
Early on in the play Penthus roughly grabs Dionysus’ hair and cuts it, and later he is given a long wig and has a loose lock of hair gently fixed by Dionysus when he dresses up as a maenad. Isn’t that something? Violence juxtaposed against tenderness and how Pentheus slowly forgets his self clothed like a follower of the very god he opposes. I coloured the ends of the wig purple because making the wig from the hair Pentheus cut is hilarious and probably something Dionysus would do ngl
Anyway I can already tell the proportions/hands/quality is fried but idc I needed to draw this and yell at the void a little, y’all can enjoy it too I guess <3

“If I turn from the beach there is no roof in this tenantless island, no way shows a passage, circled by waves of the sea; no way of flight, no hope; all denotes dumbness, desolation, and death. Nevertheless my eyes shall not be dimmed in death, nor my senses secede from my spent frame, until I have besought from the gods a just penalty for my betrayal, and implored the faith of the celestials with my last breath.”
I feel like depictions of Ariadne on Naxos kinda mostly portray sleeping or sad Ariadne but like. Where’s my “sped-run the five stages of grief on Naxos” Ariadne. All this to say I love “pissed off and calling for divine intervention” Ariadne from Catallus 64 very much speak your truth darling
Also added a bunch of panels where her thread leads a silly little guy to her because I want her to have a happy ending :]
#ariadne#dionysus#greek mythology#my art#sanskart (mythos)#yes the art style is different again. I like trying new things sue me :(#also because I drew this during my breaktimes over Two Months RL is legitimately kicking my ass gods

[Leaving]
I have so many questions about the story of Ariadne’s abandonment on Naxos like:
1. On one hand I get not wanting to marry the daughter of the guy who’s sacrificing your people to the cowboy that lives under his castle (even if you originally promised her), but Theseus then marries Ariadne’s sister?? Is it because in some stories Ariadne is running the labyrinth while Phaedra’s mostly not involved or
2. Did Phaedra say nothing on the boat/Naxos before ditching her sister to become Queen of Athens. I desperately want to know what’s their siblings dynamic and if they consider the Minotaur a brother or a monster
3. What is going on in Naxos at this period in the mythos. Was it inhabited by people? Were there only cats and wandering gods? Like on the “getting stranded on a greek island in a mythic scenario” scale where does Naxos lie if you don’t attract godly notice
Anyway drew more Ariadne my favourite greek mythos girl fr
#ariadne#theseus#minotaur#greek mythology#my art#sanskart (mythos)#I did these pieces over the month of Aug if anyone is wondering what is up with the slightly different styles#this month is looking to be a lot busier so I’m just taking when I can to clean up my wips#at least one more wip to go for Ariadne bc I had to split them up for my sanity#with a special little guy :]

As a princess Ariadne knows she’ll likely be married off for gold or politics, but that doesn’t mean she can’t daydream about meeting and falling in love with a beautiful stranger :)

Oh hello and thank you!! <3
If you meant the Bacchae piece I did then yeah! A silly fact is that the reason for the blank mask is because while drawing it I straight out didn’t have a design in mind for Dionysus’ face :p Then I was checking the play again while drawing maenad!Pentheus and realised that D wears a mask for basically all of it and went: “Perfect. Say no more.”
“If I turn from the beach there is no roof in this tenantless island, no way shows a passage, circled by waves of the sea; no way of flight, no hope; all denotes dumbness, desolation, and death. #I can’t link it in this post for some reason but#if you checked ‘the bacchae’ or ‘sanskart(mythos)’ tag on this blog it should be at the bottom#I haven’t posted that much greek myth art so it should be really quick#dionysus#greek mythology#I also drew that in an afternoon because the hair quote haunted me the whole night after I read it#if I could redo it I’ll probably fix D’s weird wonky shoulder in the last panel#but yeah I very much am quite happy with it overall and I’m glad it made an impression! :)
