Okay. I’m back with my Sansûkh read through. I am so sorry it took so long for me to do this chapter. Several things came up that had to take priority in my life and some stuff had to be put to the side so I could deal with it. But don’t worry, most everything has been sorted out and I’m ready to get back to it! So,without further ado…
Sansûkh Chapter 5: Reactions/Review
The audio of The Dwarves’ Walking Song was really good! It reminded me of Erutan’s music, which I’m a huge fan of. Excellent job!
Gosh, I love Glóin’s family. Almost every fanon depiction of them is just so wholesome and this one is no exception. Bombur’s family is giving them a run for their money though!
I really appreciate the little meetup of Bilbo and the dwarves from the Blue Mountains and some of the company. I’ve always found it sad that Bilbo, as far as we know, doesn’t reconnect with the members of the company. However, Tolkien does leave plenty of gaps in his story that can be filled with moments like this, which is used to full advantage.
I see what you’re doing, determamfidd, with that early interaction between Bilbo and Gimli. I think in LotR, Bilbo was just a part of a story to Gimli, but by actually seeing and talking to Bilbo he has a better understanding of both Bilbo and hobbits in general. I imagine this will add more significance to future conversations he has with Frodo in the future.
It’s really cool seeing all the different artistic renderings of various characters. Not only does it add visuals to the story, but it demonstrates how much of writing and storytelling is dependent on the interpretation, imagination and environment of the reader.
😆 Conkers.
Man, the end of the chapter was particularly hard for Bilbo in particular.
The meeting of Bilbo and Dís held a lot of weight for both characters. Under happier circumstances, they would have greeted each other as family, and I think they both know it. Instead, however, they are overwhelmed with their own grief. They both see the echoes of what was and what could have been in each other’s eyes.
Damn, we got *this* close to getting a “Bilbo lives in the Lonely Mountain” AU. But Bilbo’s right, it wouldn’t be the same without Thorin.
Overall, this was a rather lighthearted chapter compared to what we have seen so far, which isn’t at all a bad thing. It was a much needed break from the heavy feels that has been thrown at the audience. We can’t have constant doom and gloom, so sometimes we just need to meet up with friends and kick ass at conkers. This chapter was a great way to balance the previous angst, which shows that the author has a good sense of story pacing. Great job!
