Last Black Man in San Francisco is more than a movie, it is a poetic experience. I have never been to San Fran but after watching this film, I feel like I have. The story couldn't be more authentic, being directed and co-writen by San Francisco natives @technicolor_talbot and his childhood friend @jimmiefailsiv who plays himself in the film. The incredibly beautiful cinematography by @knucklewood drives you through the city, telling a story much more about a place than a character. This film was made possible by several independent producers, a Kickstarter, @planbentertainment , and @a24 . The cast has everyone from big stars like #dannyglover and #robmorgan as well as local, first-time San Francisco actors. The film has already won several awards for first-time filmmakers, and I'm sure it will continue to win even more. This film is a poetic ode to San Francisco that addresses gentrification, local characters, male friendships, vulnerability, feeling like an outsider, community, and so much more. Please experience Last Black Man in San Francisco. ⠀ ⠀ #filmfriday #lastblackmaninsanfrancisco #joetalbot #jimmiefails #sanfrancisco #sanfranciscofilm #cinematography #planbentertainment #a24 #firsttimefilmmaker #originalscreenplay #independentfilm #kickstarter #AdamNewportBerra #malefriendship #thisguyfucks #gentrification #homeownership #blackhistorymonth #blackartist #blackstories #africanamericanhistorymonth ⠀ ⠀ (at San Francisco, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8jLXW1BoOd/?igshid=hwwg8s20qjzf

Life As A Foreigner
San Francisco International Film Festival 2017 began on April 5 at the Castro Theatre with the drama comedy Landline. But what really caught my attention while scrolling through the line up was The Future Perfect.
Why? Because of how much I can relate to the Chinese girl, Xiaobin.

The sixty-five minute long movie tells the story of Xiaobin who emigrates to Argentina to be reunited with her family who moved years earlier. Her parents do not put effort in mingling with other Argentinians and prefer to stay in the Chinese circle, expecting the same of their daughter. They think 18 is the perfect age for a girl to get married and want her to only marry a nice Chinese boy through a set-up meeting, everything arranged by the parents.
She struggles with her background culture and the local language which results in her getting fired from her work. Her enthusiasm to blend with the society forces her to secretly takes language lesson and date an Indian immigrant.

This reminds me of how my family who has a Chinese background, expects a lot from their children, similar to the movie. Their perception has been shaped since a long time ago, even though it does get better as the world starting to change and more people become open-minded. They want their children to be able to speak Chinese (besides Indonesian), and English comes after. It would bring them to shame to not be able to speak their own mother tongue.
My parents are more open-minded than most Chinese, but they still prefer me marrying a Chinese guy who has a decent, stable job who owns a house, with a business education background. And list goes on and on and on...
Coming to the US for the first time was a culture shock. My English was not as good. I got a hard time in figuring out what some people speak about when they use slang language. My parents never stop reminding me to only look for Chinese boys, which I always find very funny and end up with me teasing them of how I get a white boyfriend.
The Future Perfect brings the audience in her journey in finding her true identity, growing up as a young adult, and the importance of language in communication with others. It is very relatable to us students, travelers. Watching this may remind us of how far we have come, take us back to the first day we moved here, and why we moved here.
A movie worth to watch. Buy the ticket now before it is too late!
