In case anyone is wondering, no I won’t be watching what is now going to be called Miss Scarlet for s5. I invested my emotional energy into 4 seasons of Miss Scarlet and the Duke and their infuriating and unnecessarily drawn out slow burn to have it all be for nothing. This is literally like a bait and switch fic where they change the tags right at the last chapter. I refuse to give them any more of my viewing time.
Farewell, William Wellington, you will be missed. 💔

Charlotte’s thoughts as The Sanditon Flyer coach took off for London were filled with myriad possibilities over what could have gone wrong in Georgiana’s planned meeting with Mr Molyneux and all that could conceivably be done to bring her friend back safely. She tried to distract her mind from her troubles, and as the carriage passed the construction site, she noticed that Mr Robinson now appeared to be supervising the workers.
“It is good of Mr Robinson to see after the workers on such short notice,” she said almost absently, finding that, for the first time, she was straining to make conversation with her unanticipated companion.
“Aye, Mr Robinson has a sensible mind and an even temper. He is well-respected by the workers.”
Charlotte smiled to herself, as that was how she would have described young Mr Stringer to anyone who asked after him.
“And he knows the building plans almost as well as Mr Parker and I do,” Mr Stringer continued.
“He is also a particular friend of yours. Is he not?”
Mr Stringer gave a small nod. “He is.”
“I thought as much when I observed the two of you at the cricket match. Your team appeared to have a good shorthand among them, but particularly you and Mr Robinson.”
When Miss Heywood mentioned her observation of him at the previous day’s match, Stringer thought of how his eyes had kept meeting hers when he had looked into the crowd. The bright smile she had directed to him and the enthusiasm with which she had been cheering him on (until the point she began to play for the opposing team, that is) had been encouragement that she might return his affections. But as they discussed his friendship with Mr Robinson, he could hear his friend’s voice reminding him that young ladies—even those as keen and agreeable as Miss Heywood—were not likely to make their preferences known until they were absolutely certain of a man’s interest.
“Does he share your interest in architecture?” Charlotte asked.
“More than most in my acquaintance. Though perhaps not as much as my present company,” he said, throwing Charlotte a small smile. “But he is quite congenial and is apt to humour me when I have new ideas for designs.”
Charlotte smiled to herself, knowing how often Mr Stringer liked to sketch. “The construction seems to be coming along rather nicely. It is going to be the most handsome gathering of buildings when it is completed.”
“Thank you for saying so, Miss Heywood,” he said kindly. However, his lips soon pulled back into a grim expression. “But I’m not sure that it is.”

Sanditon Meta: How Mr. Colbourne Saved This Regency Romance
By the time Charlotte’s story concluded in Sanditon’s third season, I was fully convinced the series had given its heroine a Jane Austen-worthy arc. Her romance with Mr. Sidney Parker in season 1 had sexy moments, sure, but it left me deeply unsettled. The guy lectured her regularly and didn’t seem to respect her as an equal. Plus he, you know, got engaged to an heiress without so much as a heads-up.
With Mr. Colbourne’s introduction in season 2, the show (inspired by an unfinished Austen manuscript) teased Charlotte’s second chance at love. Then Season 3 brought it all home. Evolving from a grumpy lord of the manor to a supportive life partner, Mr. Colbourne showed Charlotte that he is her true soulmate.
How? Let us count the ways…

Sanditon
Almost done with season 1. A fine romp. I am told it does NOT follow the book. So, if that is the case, then it becomes a Regency era soap opera (novella, if you will). I have enjoyed S1. I do not know if I will be able to stomach S2 & S3.
stay tuned....

Yesterday I finished rewatching season 1 of Sanditon with Mr Wifey because he’d never seen it, and I was reminded of a) how much I freaking loved Sidney Parker and b) how infuriated I was that his character gets dropped like that. 😩 Jane Austen would never!

Sea Change - A Sanditon Fanfic
Sanditon Fanfiction|Charlotte Heywood/James Stringer|Ch 1 of ?|1.3K|Rated G|Season One Alternate Take|Developing friendships|Friends to lovers
Story summary: Charlotte chances upon Mr Stringer on her way to the carriage to London. He insists upon going with her to find Georgiana, and their futures are forever changed.
Tumblr media
I've written my first fic for Sanditon! It takes place at the end of s01e05 when Charlotte decides to set out on her own to rescue Georgiana.

An uncommonly heavy rain had reached Sanditon overnight, the swift winds and steady drops bringing a rise to the sea level and delaying travel to and from the seaside town.
Frustrated by those delays and determined as ever to right what had gone so terribly wrong, Miss Charlotte Heywood may as well have been wearing horse blinders as she made her way past the construction site on her way to the carriage bound for London.
“Miss Heywood?”
She stopped promptly at hearing her name called.
Charlotte placed a hand on her bonnet, squinting to see past the rising sun as she looked up to find the man attached to the voice. “Mr Stringer,” she greeted, adjusting her position so she could see him more clearly. “My apologies. I did not mean to pass by without saying hello. I seem I find myself rather distracted at the moment.”
He studied her countenance, noting the effort that went into forcing a pleasant smile to cover her furrowed brow. “If I may say so, you seem more distressed than distracted,” he said, his voice low and laced with concern. “Is everything all right, Miss Heywood?”
“I am, of course, troubled by Miss Lambe’s abduction.”
“Of course,” he repeated softly. “I know that she has become a good friend to you.”
“No one has heard word of her since you delivered the news that she was taken by those men instead of meeting Mr Molyneux as planned.” She fidgeted with the strap of her reticule as she avoided letting on the true reason for her worry. “If you’ll excuse me, Mr Stringer, I must be going.”
Charlotte did not wait for a response from Mr Stringer before taking off in the direction of the coach house.
But Miss Heywood’s evasive nature seemed so unlike her that Mr Stringer’s concern had only increased. He would not be satisfied until he was assured that Miss Heywood was no longer in distress and he wasted no time in following after her.
“May I ask where you are going with such haste?”
She looked over her shoulder, then turned towards him and quieted her voice. “I am on my way to London to retrieve Miss Lambe.”
“I see. And what did the Parkers have to say about this?”
“I have left word for Mrs Parker of my mission,” she offered nonchalantly.
Mr Stringer nodded and continued to walk alongside her in silence as he decided on what to say next. “Is there anyone accompanying you, Miss Heywood?” he asked, trying to match her casual tone.
“I am travelling alone.”
“Miss Heywood…” James considered how his words might be received before he continued speaking. “I appreciate that you are more concerned with the safe return of your friend than with your own safety. But I do not think it is wise to go in search of Miss Lambe of your own accord.”
“I thank you for your concern, Mister Stringer, but I am more than capable of travelling to London by myself.”
“I have do doubt of that, Miss. But once you arrive in London… Do you have a plan for locating Miss Lambe?”
“I–” Charlotte paused as she considered his question. She lifted her chin defiantly as she spoke. “I shall start with locating Mr Molyneux. I have his address from our correspondence.”
“If you will allow me to say so, Miss Heywood… Given the nature of Miss Lambe’s disappearance, I fear that this could be a dangerous situation you find yourself in.”
She left out a huff and resumed her quickened pace towards her destination. “I am determined to see that my friend is safe. You will not deter me from my journey.”
His long strides allowed him to easily catch up with her. “I apologise if you have misunderstood me, Miss Heywood. For I do not wish to deter you from going in search of Miss Lambe. I wish to accompany you and see that you both have a safe return to Sanditon.”

Yeah this needs to be talked about more, the amount of articles, podcasts, youtube/tiktok videos or just online comments that I saw after season 1 came out that just assume the Bton books were diverse because the show is? And the fact the new marketing push around the books is not disabusing people about that notion, mainly through the new covers (both regular and the show tie-in ones).
It's a really complicated, thorny issue in some ways and very simple in others. If I look at Just Romance Novels (which is obviously a niche, just zeroing in a genre for the sake of discussion) the genre is still dominated by product from white authors, largely with characters written as white. While it's diversifying (far more slowly than it should be) a lot of the older "proven success" books are written by white people, about white people. I don't think it's wrong to cast diversely if you're adapting those books--and on a practical, "people putting food on the table" level, I want actors of color to have as many solid, well-paying opportunities as possible.
At the same time, there are still so many authors of color neglected. Not all of whom wrote people of color on the page, of course, especially in historical romance--Sherry Thomas and Stacy Reid are two historical romance novelists who write about white characters, and it's no surprise that the potential adaptation of Stacy's works would be cast more diversely. There's a level of tracking how expectations have changed when you look at how Sinful Wallflowers was presented as a book series, and how it could be presented as a show.
And like, I'll allow that we're in the midst of a sort of "boom" (who knows how long it'll last) of period pieces cast more diversely than they would've been even 15 years ago. The approaches are often different and individualized. The Great has people of color playing characters who'd be literal white Russians "in real life", and it's literally never commented on, which I think many would prefer for a show like Bton. BUT, most of the lead characters are white, with Orlo (who I think did not get the strongest writing from jump, though Sascha wanting to leave after s1 didn't help) and Arkady (who I think is hilarious and finally got more screentime in s3, but he could've gotten more from the beginning... so much Velementov screentime should be Arkady screentime) being two of the only truly prominent people of color onscreen.
Then you have something like Sanditon, where Georgiana gets better writing than many people on Bton, but the show obviously never knew how to really confront her background, made the racist old lady the peak comic relief, and never prioritized Georgiana the way her white counterpart Charlotte was prioritized. Georgiana got an afterthought of an ending after being humiliated by the narrative several times.
One of the shows that handled this best was Tom Jones--Sophia is treated as this gem of a girl whose grandfather and aunt love her, but clearly aren't fully sure about how to solidify her safety as a Black woman of means in England. There's a very tender scene where she discusses her father enslaving her and her mother with Tom, and the show doesn't shy away from Sophia's mixed feelings on the entire thing. There's a heavy implication re: her being made to perform whiteness with face powder, etc, but nonetheless this is not dominating Sophia's storyline. She gets to be the swooning girl who falls head over heels and is desired by a good man and upheld as his ideal in every way. She confronts conflict, but she does not SUFFER, and she is not MINIMIZED in favor of white women in the story--Sophia is really pretty explicitly like, The Woman of that piece. Presented as the most beautiful, as not flawless but good and deserving of love, as a true classical heroine whose personal narrative is actively expanded to match Tom's. The only thing I find prominently weird (after one viewing) is that she and Tom never had like, a sweet wedding night scene, as we saw Tom have sex with three different white women onscreen, of of which was like.... the core villain. I would've liked to have seen Sophia get the full physical adoration there, onscreen, and it did stand out a bit that she didn't.
So those are adaptations with growing pains, not getting everything right, but some being better than others (and Bton being the bottom of the barrel, there).
Then there are things that are unequivocally wrong, and not a part of growing pains as adaptations navigate between what sells and what diversifies and what works, and one of those unequivocally wrong things is selling the Bton books as diverse reads. Those books are some of the most conventional Regency romances out there; you don't even get a lot of economic or class diversity, let alone any racial diversity. Almost everyone in that series is upper class. Even Sophie is the daughter of a nobleman. And I'm not saying it's wrong to write about those people, but for the books to now be sold as something they're not, when the author didn't even think people of color could get HEAs in her Historically Accurate World... is the worst kind of capitalism.
That's part of the extra ugliness (on top of all the obvious ugliness) here. Julia Quinn was against what she's now profiting from. It's not just picking a white author's works to be emblematic of diversity they don't represent; it's THAT author's works. And I think that making Queen Charlotte from all this, putting Julia's name on the cover (I am.... 90% sure that book was ghostwritten, with input from Julia and Shonda, but go off) just adds to all of it.

Period drama week 2023-
Tumblr media
Lady Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), the absolute queen of Downton Abbey. What more can be said?
Best line: I'm a woman Mary, I can be as contrary as I choose.
Tumblr media
Day 6: Favourite characters.
William Buxton (Tom Hiddleston), Cranfords resident dog dad. Have to give a shout out to Sykes, Hiddles may have been my teenage crush but he will forever be my favourite actor RIP.
Best trait: Hopeless romantic.
Elizabeth Butler (Charlie Murphy) she has it all talent to sing, brains to train as a doctor, born into money yet has a heart for those "beneath" her. Truly embodies the spirit of Rebellion, I wish she was in the second series or at least had more than that one line mention.
Tumblr media
Best feat: Joined the Easter rising faught and healed, all while looking stunning in her wedding dress.
This is in no particular order appart from definitely number 1.
Tumblr media
Best line: Wouldn't dream of it *sassiest head wobble known to mankind*
Captain Declan Fraser (Frank Blake), Sanditon season twos real heartthrob. Them eyes you could swim in with the sarcastic smile, why did any of the ladies look at anyone else? Heroic, intelligent, dry sense of humour and sensitive to boot. Austinesque swoonwodthyness at its peak.
Tumblr media
Abigail Hill (Emma Stone), so pure yet so evil, no wonder she is The Favourite. Amazing characterisation, still can't figure out if I love or loath her but I'm here for it.
Greatest feat: Changes the course of a war whilst holding the position of a maid.
Tumblr media
Benadict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson). If Colin is the labrador of the family, Benadict is the cat. Appreciative of the finer things in life, values aesthetics, is willing to play by his own rules and is very loving to his family (I especially love his relationship with Eloise, he doesn't understand her struggles but he still wants to listen and share a cheeky cig).
Best line: Poetry is the art of revealing precious truth with words.
