Sand and Surf Lodge, Fort Bragg, California
I went on vacation last month to the North Coast of California. It's a lovely area with scenic cliffs overlooking the Pacific, ancient redwood forests, and quaint sea-side towns. It doesn't boast the overloading excitement of, say, a Disneyland vacation, but if you want to relax to stunning views, it's a good place to go.
We stayed at this lovely lodge, where we were unexpectedly upgraded from a normal room to the "owner's suite," a two story, two bedroom suite attached to the main office and laundry. I've attempted to recreate it in broad strokes as a Vacation Rental in Windenburg, where I hope my sims will have as much fun as I did.
The front façade with carport and office. The suite is accessed through the gate to the side and through the sliding doors, inside of which is the keycard-access door.
The Office. The door in the background is another entrance to the suite. To the right is a door leading to the laundry.
The suite enters into the kitchen. There's a full-sized fridge and stove, and plenty of cookware and appliances. The picture to the left in the right-hand picture is the actual painting in the room: it's one of two pieces of cc I made for this build (otherwise I stuck to EA items or cc I already had, such as the stove from Hattie's Coastal collection and the rug from the Cottage Garden collection).
The first floor has a dining area and living area as well. The sims get only a tv stand, but the real hotel has an electric fireplace under the tv.
The porch on the first floor has some patio furniture and a barbeque. You can sit and watch the ocean for hours. Stairs lead off the porch and down into a small enclosed garden, and a gate lets out onto the coast-side trail.
The master bedroom. It's a little smaller in reality. Sliding glass doors lead onto the upstairs balcony, where two Adirondack chairs provide seating. By being upstairs and therefore higher, it provides a better view of the water than the porch below.
The second bedroom. The view is less than exciting: it overlooks a satellite dish and the parking lot. The chest of drawers, on the other hand, is fascinating: giant and with hidden compartments.
The bathroom, which connects to the two bedrooms. It features both a shower and a jacuzzi-style tub, the latter of which overlooks the ocean. I greatly appreciate Hamsterbellbelle for creating a sunken bathtub, as it made the bathroom that much more accurate.

on vacation with the f1 boys ✈️
i love to travel so this is just me being self indulgent lol. also disclaimer i know some of the pictures are not from the country i said the vacation is in, bear with me lol. hope you enjoy and drop me any pref requests you might have!
Lando Norris
Destination: Finland
Lando always went on a ski trip with his friends during the winter break and this year he invited you to go along. You started on the easier slopes, as you both had to get the hang of skiing again, but by the end of the day you were tackling some of the more difficult ones along with your group of friends. Afterwards, the group settled down in the ski lodge with cups of hot chocolate around a crackling fire. You all spent a few hours joking around and catching up after not having all been together for a while. To finish off the day, you and Lando went alone to the sauna where you had the chance to decompress together before heading to bed. All in all, the day was well spent and you asked Lando when you would be able to come back even though you knew the answer would be next year.
Oscar Piastri
Destination: New Zealand
During the winter break, you and Oscar did not want to travel too far from his home in Australia, so you decided to go to the nearby country of New Zealand. Both of you loved staying at the beach and so you decided to spend most of your days at the scenic shores of the country. After having a relaxing time at the beach, you decided to tour the country’s mountains together and to take in the beautiful views. A personal highlight for you is a romantic dinner with Oscar in the stunning city of Queenstown. All in all, it is a relaxing trip far from the pressures of racing that brings the two of you unforgettable memories.
Max Verstappen
Destination: Italy
For Max, a vacation was any time he could spend completely away from racing with you and his friends. So, instead of traveling far away from his apartment in Monaco, he wasted no time in going on a boating trip with all his favorite people along the Italian coast. You both spent days lounging on the deck together and nights drinking with the group at the yacht’s bar. The sea made for a perfect getaway from Max’s fast paced life and you could not be happier to get some time with your boyfriend in such a scenic place. Relaxing in the waves truly made for a great time.
Charles Leclerc
Destination: Los Angeles
Your favorite place to visit together was definitely LA. You both had friends who lived there so it only made sense to take a trip there when you both were free. You spent the days on the beach with him, either surfing if the waves were nice or simply sunbathing otherwise. Charles also convinced you to go on the most extreme rides at all of the amusement parks, giving you an adrenaline rush that kept you wanting more. So many laughs were had with each of your friends, especially when Charles insisted on winning you a giant Ferrari colored banana plush at the arcade. You had no idea where you would find space for it in your apartment, but you knew you would cherish the memories it brought to mind.
Carlos Sainz
Destination: Miami
To Carlos, it would not be a good vacation without some golf. So, you both decided to head to Miami where you could find the best of what both of you loved doing, golf and relaxing on the beach. While Carlos golfed in the mornings, you relaxed on the beachfront balcony of the house you were staying in. And during the afternoons, you would both head to the beach to relax in the sand and waves. One morning you decided to spice things up and have Carlos try to teach you to golf, but after accidentally hitting the ball into someone else’s golf cart, you quickly scrapped that idea. Your favorite memory of the trip was definitely the day you spent completely together on a snorkeling trip to see a nearby coral reef.
Lewis Hamilton
Destination: Dubai
When Lewis wasn’t racing, he still loved to be doing something adventurous. Lucky for him, you shared his love of an adrenaline rush. So the perfect destination was Dubai. Every day was filled with excitement, from riding ATVs though the desert to eating at luxurious restaurants in the city. Lewis even convinced you to go skydiving with him at the end of your trip which was an experience you knew you would never forget. There was never a dull moment when you and Lewis traveled together and you knew that once this vacation ended, you would already be planning for another.
Daniel Ricciardo
Destination: Austin
Everyone knew one of Daniel’s favorite places was Austin, Texas. So when he had a week off after the race in Texas, Daniel of course convinced you to stay with him on vacation there for the next few days. He took you to his favorite bars and barbecue restaurants to savor the food. He also took you to a ranch where you got to ride horses through the American countryside. On the last day of the trip, the two of you decided to go to a country music concert and dance the night away. Both of you loved music and so this was the perfect memory to end what was a great few days of exploring the Texan landscape. And of course you had to get a souvenir cowboy hat to remember the trip by.
Yuki Tsunoda
Destination: Mexico
As you and Yuki are both foodies, you decided to go to a place with one of your favorite cuisines, Mexico. You arranged to travel throughout the country to try different foods from various regions. Between meals, you would spend time seeing some of Mexico’s most scenic beaches and visiting some of the tourist destinations like Chichen Itza. The best part, however, was getting to spend so much uninterrupted time with your boyfriend who was always away from home. Though you knew Yuki lived the fast life, all you wanted to do with him was relax. And what better place to do it than in such a warm and beautiful country. As for your favorite food you tried? There were too many good dishes to choose!
Alex Albon
Destination: Phuket
Alex was thrilled when you agreed to go to the country he raced for. When you got there, he excitedly showed you around all of the sights and took you to eat his favorite local food. After a few days of frantically touring Alex’s favorite places, you both decided that it wasn’t truly a vacation unless you relaxed a little bit. So, you spent the rest of the week at the beach in each other’s arms, just savoring the other’s company. There were a few splash fights in the pool and the time where you jokingly pushed Alex off of the boat, but otherwise you spent your time relaxing on the sand. Thai sunsets were truly like no other and you knew you would savor your memories for years to come.
Logan Sargeant
Destination: USA
When you realized that Logan hadn’t traveled much around his own country outside of Florida, you immediately decided that you were going on a road trip to fix that. The plan was that you would go up the east coast, stopping in all of the major cities to see the sights. From Carolina beaches to the nation’s capital, there were surely a lot of things to do. And when you had a boyfriend who drove cars for a living, of course you got to the be the passenger princess. Every time a road sign showed something that sounded cool, you insisted that you stop. Your personal favorite destination was New York, where you got to show Logan a lot of the famous landmarks that everybody would recognize. Once you hit Boston, you decided to head back south to his home state and warmer weather. You would cherish these memories forever.

Fifteen years. It had been fifteen long, unyielding years since the day Jack Sparrow betrayed you, since the bitter moment when the Black Pearl sailed away, leaving you stranded in that ghostly, abandoned city. You had watched the ship grow smaller and smaller on the horizon, the realization cutting through you like a blade. All you had were the clothes on your back, a handful of coins in your pocket, and the heavy ache of Jack Sparrow’s betrayal lodged deep in your chest.
Jack.
Even now, the memory of him stirred a storm of emotions—anger, heartbreak, and a pain so sharp it felt fresh, no matter how many years had passed. You had trusted him—more than trusted him. Jack had been your anchor in the stormy seas of your life, the person who understood you better than anyone else ever had.
From the moment you met him, he had been a force of chaos and charm, sweeping you into a whirlwind of adventures. You had seen the worst of the world together, fought side by side against mutinies, rival crews, and the law itself. Jack had a knack for getting into trouble, and you had a knack for pulling him out of it. Somewhere along the way, between the dangers and the laughter, you’d fallen for him.
You never told him, of course. Jack was Jack—flamboyant, reckless, impossible to pin down. But you had thought, in the quiet moments, when he would look at you with a glint in his dark eyes, that he might have felt the same. There had been nights under the stars when his hand lingered too long on yours, moments when his laughter softened into something tender. You had let yourself believe in those fleeting instants, let yourself hope.
And then he left you.
The city where he abandoned you was a hollow place, its crumbling walls echoing with the whispers of lives long gone. The buildings were broken, the streets empty. You had spent days wandering, calling out for anyone, but no one answered. The sun blazed mercilessly overhead, and by the time you stumbled across a well with brackish water, your throat was raw with thirst.
The betrayal ate at you, a slow and gnawing thing. How could he have done it? You replayed your last moments together again and again, searching for answers. You had seen no signs of treachery, no hint of the knife he would twist in your back. The Jack Sparrow you thought you knew would never have done this.
But there was no time for wallowing. You were alone, and the city offered no sustenance. The sea stretched out before you, mocking you with its vastness. There were no ships, no signs of life—just you and your wits.
Survival became your sole focus. You scavenged the city for anything useful—a rusted blade, scraps of cloth, fragments of food long past edible. Hunger gnawed at you, a cruel companion, but you refused to succumb. You refused to let Jack’s betrayal be the end of you.
It took weeks, but you eventually found a dilapidated skiff half-buried in sand along the shore. The boat was barely seaworthy, its hull riddled with cracks, but it was your only chance. You spent days repairing it, patching the holes with resin made from tree sap and sewing together a makeshift sail.
When the boat was ready, you pushed it into the surf, your muscles trembling with effort. The wind caught the tattered sail, and you felt the boat lurch forward, leaving the cursed city behind.
The journey to safety was no less harrowing. The sea was an unforgiving mistress, battering you with waves and storms, but you clung to life with a ferocity you hadn’t known you possessed. You caught fish with your bare hands, drank rainwater when you could, and prayed to gods you didn’t believe in.
By the time you reached the nearest port, you were a shadow of your former self—starved, sunburned, and hardened in ways you hadn’t thought possible. But you were alive.
Over the years, you built yourself into someone new. You became a pirate in your own right, carving out a name that struck fear into the hearts of sailors. You learned to fight, to steal, to trust no one but yourself. The memory of Jack Sparrow lingered like a phantom, fueling your determination.
You thought of him often, though you hated yourself for it. His laughter haunted your dreams, and his betrayal burned in your chest. You vowed that if you ever saw him again, you would make him pay for what he had done.
And now, fifteen years later, here he was.
The tavern was loud and dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of spilled rum and unwashed bodies. You had just closed a deal when your eyes landed on him, and the world seemed to stop.
Jack Sparrow.
He sat at a corner table, his hat tilted back, his grin as infuriating as ever.
Your heart skipped a beat when you saw him sitting there, the years seemingly melting away in an instant. But the flicker of surprise and recognition was quickly engulfed by the searing rage that had lived within you for fifteen long years. The betrayal, the abandonment, the countless nights spent cursing his name—all of it surged to the surface in a violent storm of emotion. Without a second thought, you moved toward him, your boots thudding against the wooden floor with purposeful strides.
“Jack Sparrow,” you spat, your voice as sharp as a blade.
He looked up, and for a fleeting moment, his expression froze. His eyes widened slightly, and a thousand emotions flickered across his face in rapid succession: panic, disbelief, relief, joy, and then fear. He hadn’t thought he’d ever see you again, not after all this time. Relief flooded him first—you were alive, and that alone was enough to loosen the knot in his chest. Then came happiness, a warm, bubbling feeling he couldn’t suppress even as fear clawed its way to the forefront. What would you do to him now? What could he possibly say to make it right?
But Jack Sparrow was nothing if not a master at hiding his emotions, and within seconds, he plastered on a familiar, devil-may-care grin.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t—”
You didn’t let him finish. Your fist connected with his jaw with a force that sent him sprawling backward into his chair. The sudden impact made the room fall silent, every patron turning to stare.
Jack groaned, rubbing his jaw as he blinked up at you, his hat skewed and his grin faltering only for a moment. “I suppose I deserved that,” he muttered, adjusting his hat before his grin returned, crooked as ever.
“You deserved more than that!” you shouted, your voice trembling with years of pent-up fury. “You left me for dead, you bastard!”
You didn’t wait for him to respond. Your hand flew to the hilt of your sword, and you drew it in one fluid motion, the steel catching the dim light of the tavern. Jack’s eyes darted to the blade, and for once, the mask of humor slipped.
“Now, love,” he began, his tone laced with cautious charm. “Surely, we can talk about this like civilized—”
“Civilized?” you snapped, your voice rising. “After what you did? I should run you through right here!”
The bartender slammed his hands on the counter, his face a mixture of exasperation and fear. “Not in my tavern!” he barked. “If you two want to kill each other, do it outside!”
You barely spared the man a glance, your attention fully locked on Jack. Reaching forward, you grabbed him by the collar of his coat and yanked him to his feet.
“Outside,” you growled, dragging him toward the door.
Jack stumbled after you, his hands raised in mock surrender. “Now, there’s no need for this sort of—oof!”
You shoved him out the door and into the cool night air. The sounds of the tavern faded behind you as you threw him against the wooden wall of the building. He winced as his back hit the planks, his hands instinctively going to steady himself.
“Be ready to die, traitor!” you hissed, leveling your sword at his chest.
Jack held up his hands, his palms outward in a placating gesture. “Whoa, whoa, whoa. Let’s not overreact, shall we?” he said, his tone laced with nervous humor. “I’ve been called many things in my day, but traitor feels a touch... harsh.”
“Harsh?” you shouted, your voice trembling with emotion. “You abandoned me, Jack! You left me to die in that cursed city! After everything we’d been through, after—” Your voice broke, and you quickly swallowed down the lump in your throat. “You betrayed me.”
Jack’s grin faltered, his expression softening as he saw the raw pain in your eyes. For a moment, he didn’t know what to say, didn’t know how to bridge the chasm that had opened between you all those years ago.
“Look, love,” he started, his voice quieter now, “I know it seems bad—”
“Seems?” you interrupted, your blade pressing against his chest.
“—but there’s more to the story,” he finished quickly, his hands still raised. “If you’ll give me a moment to explain before you skewer me, that is.”
Your grip on the sword tightened, the fury bubbling in your chest warring with the faint flicker of curiosity. Finally, you growled, “You have one minute.”
Jack let out a breath, clearly relieved you weren’t running him through—yet. His dark eyes flickered to the blade you still held, but when they met yours, the humor that usually danced within them was gone. In its place was something raw, something vulnerable you’d never seen before.
“I left you in that city because I had no choice,” he said, his voice low, uncharacteristically serious. The grin he’d always used as armor was nowhere to be seen. “Barbossa had the crew turned against me—and against you. They wanted you gone, love, and their methods…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening as the words caught in his throat. “Their methods wouldn’t have left you alive. Leaving you there was the only way I could keep you safe.”
Safe. The word hit you like a slap, tearing through your fury. The memories of that cursed city came rushing back: the hunger, the thirst, the sleepless nights spent jumping at shadows, wondering when danger would come for you.
“Safe?” you echoed, your voice trembling with barely restrained rage. “You call that safe? You left me alone, Jack. No food, no water, no way out. I had to fight for my life every damn day because of you!”
Jack flinched at your words, his hands twitching as if he wanted to reach for you but thought better of it. “And I knew you would,” he said, his voice rising, his frustration seeping through. “You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known, and I knew you’d survive. You had to. It was the only way I could keep them off your trail!”
“Don’t you dare put this on me,” you snarled, the blade in your hand shaking as anger and sorrow churned inside you. “You didn’t even tell me! You didn’t trust me enough to explain—”
“Because I was bloody terrified!” he roared, the sudden intensity in his voice making you flinch. His hands shot up, grabbing your shoulders. “Terrified, alright? Of what they’d do to you. Of what I’d lose if I didn’t make the hardest choice of my life.”
His words slammed into you like a wave, leaving you momentarily stunned. Jack Sparrow—Jack, the unflappable rogue, the man who had faced down storms, cannon fire, and death without blinking—was standing before you with his heart on his sleeve, trembling with the weight of the truth.
“And what about me, Jack?” you asked, your voice breaking as tears threatened to spill. “You left me thinking you’d betrayed me, thinking I was nothing to you. Fifteen years, Jack. I hated you for fifteen years!”
“I hated myself more,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Every bloody day, I wondered if I’d made the right choice. If you were alive. If I’d condemned you to something worse than what the crew had planned. But I couldn’t risk it, love. I couldn’t risk you.”
Your sword arm faltered, the weight of his words pressing down on you like the weight of the ocean itself. He hadn’t abandoned you out of malice or selfishness—it had been out of fear, a desperate, twisted attempt to save you.
“Why, Jack?” you whispered, the tears now freely falling. “Why would you do something like that?”
His hands left your shoulders to cup your face, his calloused thumbs brushing away your tears. His dark eyes bore into yours, filled with a mixture of pain, regret, and something else—something you hadn’t allowed yourself to believe was real.
“Because I loved you,” he said, his voice breaking into a shout, as if the words had been locked inside him for too long and burst free of their own accord. “I loved you then, and I love you now. And I’d do it all over again if it meant keeping you alive. Even if it meant you hating me forever.”
The world seemed to fall silent. Your breath caught in your throat as his confession hung between you, raw and unpolished, tearing through the years of anger and bitterness that had kept your heart locked away.
“I loved you, too,” you admitted, the words tumbling out before you could stop them. Your voice cracked, and a sob escaped your lips. “And you broke me, Jack. You broke me when you left.”
Jack’s own eyes were glassy now, and he pressed his forehead against yours. “I know,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “And I’ll spend the rest of my days trying to make it right. If you’ll let me.”
The sword slipped from your hand, clattering to the ground, forgotten. All the rage, the grief, the betrayal—it was still there, but it was eclipsed by something stronger. You reached for him, your fingers tangling in the fabric of his coat, and he pulled you into his arms like he’d never let go.
His lips found yours, hesitant at first, but when you didn’t pull away, the kiss deepened, filled with all the words left unsaid over the years. His hands held you as if you might vanish, and for the first time in fifteen years, the ache in your chest began to heal.
When you finally pulled back, Jack rested his forehead against yours, his breath warm against your skin.
“You’re still an insufferable bastard,” you shot back, though your voice held no heat.
“Aye,” he said, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “But I’m your insufferable bastard, love.”
For the first time in years, you smiled—a real, unguarded smile—and the two of you stood there, tangled in each other, as the weight of fifteen years finally began to lift.

The submitter commented, “Really chill area (although overpriced in the busy season) with great surfing (I recommend Cox Bay) and hiking (Tonquin Trailhead, and Meares Island Big Tree Trail), and kayaking! Lots of fantastic food options, highly recommend Tacofino (although this food truck can get really busy), Shelter, Al’oha Poke and Tostada, and Sand Bar Bistro at Long Beach Lodge (I do not recommend Wolf in the Fog, overhyped, expensive and food was not good!). The craft/farmers market is great if you can catch it! Also on your road trip there, be sure to stop by Goats on the Roof Old Country Market in Coombes, great ice-cream (and now they have donuts!), cool marketplace and you can watch the goats eating the grass on the roof (their names are Minyon and Pip of which you can watch their livestream or videos on youtube!) <3”

You have an unexpected extra day off work or school! What are you going to do? wake up, have a long leisurely breakfast, and then spend a few hours writing. maybe do some laundry while i'm at it.
What is your favorite way to spend a summer day? exactly how i spent today: sleeping in and waking up at the cape house, a quick drive to get coffee and bagels for the fam, spend the day at the beach playing in the sand and the surf with my little cousins, come back to the house a little crispy but not too bad, have a beverage while i shower, then go out to dinner with the fam and do a fire and some s'mores with my cousins a bit later. bliss. (can you tell i'm on vacation this week?)
What is your favorite way to spend a winter day? wake up at 5am, drive a ridiculous amount of time to get up to a decent sized mountain in NH or VT, spend a hundred bucks on a lift ticket and even more on beers at the lodge later, and ski for the entire day. this might sound sarcastic, but i'm beind genuine. there's nothing i love more than skiing in the winter.
What do you do to unwind at the end of the day? read fic or a book until i pass out
Do you play any sports? yes! so many! my summer softball season just ended, and i've been filling in for my friend's co-ed 11v11 soccer team the past few weekends. my other friend and i wanna start our own team. also the aforementioned skiing. i dabble in a few others when the occasion arises, i'm pretty much game to try any sport
Other than fanfic, what is your favorite genre to read? fantasy, contemporary, coming of age
What is your comfort movie/tv show? comfort movie is dead poets society (don't @ me) and comfort tv show is the west wing
Do you write or draw? i write! i am trying to get more into drawing on my ipad, but i am very bad at it right now so tbd
What other arts or crafts do you do? i make a lot of friendship bracelets. it's just a fun craft i like to do while i watch tv. i have so many just hanging around my house, but here are some of my recent creations:
Describe your perfect breakfast: a bagel toasted with cream cheese, a big ass side of bacon, a tall glass of milk, and maybe some hot chocolate if it's cold outside

Sossusvlei - The Dunes of Namibia
May 18, 2024
Looking forward to something is so fun. When the reality exceeds expectations, it’s a treat!….. We had a 6:30 AM departure for the dunes this morning, so up and at ‘em we were at 5:15 AM. Dressed and ready, we headed to the lodge where omelets and banana muffins awaited. Oh, and cappuccino/coffee! We set off with Chicco and the same group as yesterday’s outing, save for the guy traveling on his own. It seems the ice was broken and everyone was more chatty and friendly even than yesterday. We had about a two-hour drive to get to Big Daddy - the highest of the dunes. The journey was the epitome of the “African massage” traveling over dirt and gravel roads, a few paved sections, and inside the park, deep sand. The scenery was lovely as the sun rose behind the mountains, the colors seemingly changing by the minute as the light got brighter and brighter and the definition of the shapes and textures emerging. Chicco was attentive to offering rest stops where they existed, but hey, we’re in the desert - it’s mostly nothingness. Infrequently, we’d spot a springbok, oryx or ostrich (why are the boys so often more beautiful than the girls in nature?)
We arrived at the entrance to Sossusvlei National Park before the gates opened, so we queued up with 27 vehicles ahead of us (but who’s counting). Shock of all shocks, we weren’t the only travelers headed for the dunes. In we went and it was about another 40 minutes to the point where Chicco put us in 4x4 mode. Crazy bumpy, we made it past a few stuck vehicles (so nice to be with an experienced guide who knows the complexities of sand travel), past Dune 45 - a graceful rounded shape - and on to the area of Big Daddy and the Deadvlei. Driving in across what once had been a riverbed, the dunes flanked us on both sides. The way the light catches them, for a sunny side and full-shaded side makes them even more striking than they’d be in simply full sun. At the car park, Chicco pointed about a few things about the foliage (scruffy, but still alive) including that some of the gin that seems popular here is made from scruffy trees! We parked and there was the big dilemma of which path to take: over the baby dunes at one extreme, full-on Big Daddy on the other extreme or the middle path we took which was en-route to Big Daddy, with the ability to veer off toward Deadvlei at any point. One climbs the crest of the dunes going up. Being not the first for the day, and in fact slightly later, the crest was a bit trodden which made it easier. We (to include Chicco) were a bit concerned about Jillebob’s knee situation, but she was comfortable with slow and steady so we figured it was worth a go. It was indeed quite strenuous, as every step results it a bit forward/up and a slightly less slip backwards. Slow progress. But ah, the views over and across the dunes were so so so worth it. A few people passed us, one guide for a couple of travelers generously took a bunch of photos of us,and on we pushed. Lance and Rebecca (Americans) had opted for the baby dunes. Idea and Ty (Thai and Aussie newlyweds) started toward the baby dunes but ultimately came with us. Thankfully, Chicco accompanied us on the high road. When we felt that we’d gotten the full experience, and had taken in the spectacular views, we decided to head down. Chicco recommended removing our shoes (best advice ever), so off they came. The first step off the ridge is terrifying, but the trip down was a total kick. What looked like straight down (yes, steep!) was an experience of sliding several feet with each step, stopping when the lead foot sank into the cold sand to mid-shin. Jill with poles to steady her and Seb with arms outstretched as if surfing to balance, we careened down. The exfoliation effect on our feet felt fabulous and it really wasn’t at all scary once we started. Such an experience!
We emerged at Deadvlei where dead trees are upright, held in place with no living bacteria to make them decay and in what is effectively concrete - clay hardened in the sun. It’s quite the sight. The guides (and a few signs) are clear not to touch or sit on the trees to keep them for future travelers to see. Wow. We hung out for a bit then headed back across the baby dunes.
Many vehicles did as we did - left the car park and found a big tree under which to picnic. Staff from the lodge were already set up with a multi-course meal. Second breakfast of the day, but what the heck, it replaced lunch. Everyone was cheery and chatty and the meal went by quickly. We headed “home,” with wonderful memories and a dose of exhaustion from the exertion, heat, and sun. Not bad for a morning.
Back at #11 (of 12 bungalows) we enjoyed rest and relaxation by the pool (too freezing cold to jump in), a glass of wine (Seb) and gin and tonic (Jill - in honor of the trees from the morning). Then we were off to our afternoon’s activity- a hike to some old, native paintings/carvings in the nearby mountains. We walked across the expanse that we’d been looking at just a few minutes before to one of the mountains (hills?) in what had been the distance. Along the way, Mario, our wonderful guide, passed on everything from bits about the landscape, wildlife (there is more that is unseen), archeological finds and theories, and even more enjoyably, tidbits about his life. Truly enjoyable. Jillebob’s knees did not brave the climb to the mountain cave, so Seb took her walking sticks (thank goodness!!!) and forged upward with Mario. It was a rough climb over unstable rocks and slippery pebbles, but they made it to the top intact. There, the reward were cave paintings that date back anywhere from 200 to multiple thousands of years old. Some are barely decipherable and others, quite vivid. The view back to the lodge was fantastic. No hope of seeing Jill at the bottom as her earth-tone clothes blended in; she could spot Seb scrambling up and down, wearing a light turquoise shirt. The way back got increasingly dark with only phone flashlights to illuminate the way. Mario still did well getting us home safely.
On arrival, as is the norm, the staff met us with a fresh moist towel and fruit drink. We settled into the lounge for a drink, before moving to the lodge’s upper deck, where Esther (our butler) set our table for dinner. With stars above and a cooling breeze, it was lovely. The meal, as has become expected, delicious! Ostrich for Jill and vegetarian for Seb. We chatted about the adventures to come and spied on the party of eight eating by the pool. We checked out Bruce’s observatory, but he seemed caught up with another guest, so we headed home with the possibility of meeting him there for a pre-dawn planet viewing. We’ll see how that early morning wake-up goes.
All in all, we’re in love with &Beyond: a fantastic introduction to Namibia.

The mist has finally cleared and my destination is in sight. I am unfamiliar with the feeling of oceanic sand under my feet. It is quite soft, I may add.
This place is as idyllic as I heard it described. Undella is a small town with not too many inhabitants surrounded by the sea and surf. I have never seen the ocean before, and I am captivated by it.
Perhaps I may stay out here for a while before checking into lodging. I feel at peace.
