Casa en el Agua, San Bernardo Islas, Colombia: July 2017

It’s no surprise that some of the best places to visit also demand that most creativity to get there. Casa en el Agua is hands down, one of the most worthwhile places to visit in Colombia. From Cartagena you can take a 2 hour boat ride to this house turned hostel in the middle of the ocean. Meals are made fresh and served 3 times a day, happy hour goes all day and night, there is no wifi, and most sleep in hammocks. Every day new visitors arrive and others leave and it’s this sort of cycle that makes it possible to have 10 new best friends in the span of 2-3 days. Although the Casa offers more than enough entertainment: kayaking, floating on a huge inflatable pizza, stand up paddle, ladders to jump off of, snorkeling...there’s also excursions like visits to Islote, nearby beaches, and night swims with glowing algae.

The best part of this whole experience is the unshakeable feeling that you’re experiencing something very few will ever get to enjoy: solitude and socializing in the middle of a precious part of the sea. The people who come here, come for a reason: seeking to disconnect from technology and reconnect with other travelers. So whether you decide to splurge on fresh caught lobster, or subsist of 2x1 drinks; stay active on the home-made gym equipment or swim with the tropical fish- you will never regret a side trip to Casa en el Agua.
