If you are a family caregiver of a senior and going on a family summer vacation with your senior loved one, there are some important things to consider in advance, keeping your loved one safe throughout the trip and making the trip more relaxing and fun for all family members. Please keep a copy of their medical file, which should include their medical history, prescriptions, contact information for their doctor, and any other information that may be required. You should also consider saving the information on your smartphone, which will be more convenient than lugging around a file.
5. Emergency Contact Cards
In case of an event that you get separated from your senior loved one at a rest stop or a busy airport, make sure to give them a card with your contact number on it, or they must have their cell phone. If they don't have one, you can also get them a disposable one for vacation purposes. If your loved one is memory impaired due to some form of dementia, don't forget to mention on the card a few additional family members' names and contact information and put several copies of the card in their purse or wallet and pockets.
6. GPS Tracking Accessories
Make sure to join your loved one in a GPS tracking program if they struggle to remember things due to Alzheimer's disease or another kind of dementia related to this condition. If your loved one has a tendency to go lost while you are away on vacation, it is a good idea to provide them with GPS tracking gear, such as a watch or a bracelet, so that you can locate them without risk using your smartphone.

Sorry, parents: The American dream is only for DINKS
Homebuyers with kids will likely spend 66% of their income on a mortgage and childcare this year.
Parents in Los Angeles and San Diego can expect to spend as much as 121% and 113%, respectively.
Some Californians have moved across the country to afford to buy a home.
Thinking about buying a home this year with kids already in the picture? Get ready to dig deep.
A recent study from Zillow found that potential homebuyers with children are likely to spend 66% of their income on mortgage payments and childcare expenses — an increase of nearly 50% from 2019.
The real-estate company estimated city- and state-level childcare costs from 2009 to 2022 for the typical American family with 1.94 children by analyzing data from the Women’s Bureau of the US Department of Labor and advocacy group Child Care Aware.
According to Zillow’s analysis, in 31 of the largest 50 US metropolitan areas with available childcare cost data, families looking to buy a home can expect to spend more than 60% of their income on mortgage and childcare costs.
Some areas are even costlier, with parents in cities like Los Angeles and San Diego needing to dedicate as much as 121% and 113%, respectively. (In those areas, the cost of buying a typical home and childcare is so big relative to the median income that Zillow's calculation results in figures over 100%.)
Zillow determined that a family earning a median household income of $6,640 per month can expect to allocate $1,984 of that to childcare. If the family purchased a house at a 6.61% interest rate — the rate in early January, when the US Department of Labor released its latest data on childcare costs — and made a 10% down payment, their monthly mortgage would amount to $1,973.
That leaves just $2,683 for additional expenses like food, transportation, and healthcare. This means many households with kids are financially strained; they're likely spending more than 30% of their income on housing, well above what experts recommend.
It all adds up to a costly reality that's making the American dream of homeownership seem farther out of reach for parents than ever before.
Parents can blame a yearslong battle with inflation, as well as stubbornly high home prices and mortgage rates, for contributing to their predicament.
Based on the study, a new buyer household in the United States, making the median income, would spend 30% of it on housing. It's paying for childcare, then, that adds so much on top of the housing budget.
The upshot: Another group, less encumbered financially, appears better poised to realize the dream of homeownership: "DINKS," an acronym that stands for "dual income, no kids."
Some child-free DINKS — who boast a median net worth above $200,000 according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances — devote their disposable income to luxuries like boats and expensive cars.
Without the financial obligations of raising children, such as covering medical expenses or enrolling them in daycare or private school, DINKS can save thousands of dollars a year and build greater long-term wealth.
Some DINKS use their savings to finance vacations and travel the world, like Elizabeth Johnson and her husband, who, over the past couple of years, have hiked in the Swiss Alps, snorkeled in Hawaii, and enjoyed leaf peeping in Canada.
"We hang out with other people's kids every once in a while," Johnson previously told Business Insider's Bartie Scott and Juliana Kaplan, "but then we happily just give them back to their parents."
Some Americans with kids move to places where their money goes further
One solution to the high cost of both buying a home and raising a family?
Move.
In recent years, young Americans in higher-cost states have decided to move to places that offer them a cheaper cost of living.
Janelle Crossan moved to New Braunfels, Texas, from Costa Mesa, California, in 2020 following a divorce.
She was able to become a first-time homebuyer and found a safe community to raise her son.
"I paid $1,750 for rent in a crappy little apartment in California," Crossan told BI earlier this year. "Now, three years later, my whole payment, including mortgage and property taxes, is $1,800 a month for my three-bedroom house."
Pengyu Cheng, a program manager for a tech company, told BI in 2023 that moving from California to Texas allowed him and his wife to afford their first home, giving them the confidence and security to have their first child.
"Living in California has always been expensive," Cheng said. "I knew that when my wife and I eventually expanded our family, we wouldn't be able to afford San Francisco or the Bay Area in general — even though we both earn good salaries."

15 health systems dropping Medicare Advantage plans | 2024
Medicare Advantage provides health coverage to more than half of the nation's older adults, but some hospitals and health systems are opting to end their contracts with MA plans over administrative challenges.
Among the most commonly cited reasons are excessive prior authorization denial rates and slow payments from insurers.
In 2023, Becker's began reporting on hospitals and health systems nationwide that dropped some or all of their Medicare Advantage contracts.
In January, the Healthcare Financial Management Association released a survey of 135 health system CFOs, which found that 16% of systems are planning to stop accepting one or more MA plans in the next two years. Another 45% said they are considering the same but have not made a final decision. The report also found that 62% of CFOs believe collecting from MA is "significantly more difficult" than it was two years ago.

Glory's easy acceptance—whatever you want to tell me—does feel like a 'Fox thing'. Like she's used to skittish new players, dancing around their backgrounds. Kai winces internally, feeling like he's lying somehow.
Because outside of Katie, his history is boring. He's got two parents, and they aren't even divorced. They've got money for vacations, expensive Exy gear, healthcare. Instead of languishing on some waitlist, Kai got on hormones within a year of coming out. He knows what it could've been, the hoops he might've had to jump through if his parents didn't have love and money to back up his requests. There aren't any true skeletons in his closest; he's just not ready to talk about his sister.
Kai shakes his head in response to Glory's question, though, because that's easy to answer. Thankfully, Claudia's home base is far, far away from Kai's. He's got enough familiar faces around here.
He's focused on Glory for right now, but if he looks past her, he might see TK or Mateo loitering somewhere in the bar. Just thinking about them leaves a pit in his stomach, a sense of dread—Mateo moreso than TK, yes, but even the kinder of the two siblings brings up plenty of unwelcome memories.
He clears his throat, still with the lingering burn of the shot in the back of his mouth. "To give you an idea...last time my family traveled to San Diego, we actually took a plane," Kai says. "I think it's like, eight hours by car or something."
Glory's own past feels equally unfamiliar to him. Here he is complaining about two familiar faces, when no doubt a town as small as she's describing must be full of them. Of course, as far as Kai knows, none of them have followed Glory here. "You think we'll get a chance to take a plane this year?" Championships, that is.

We're Back, A Blog Story?
Hey, long time no see, huh?
I'm back from the longest hiatus this blog's ever gone on. And for today's entry, I'm just going to briefly recap what's been going on because I think it'll touch on a lot.
Last time I updated, I did the second part of a big ask me almost anything and we covered a lot of ground, both fun and the sort of questions that're burning for upcoming creators. That week, I was thinking about what was next and how to follow it up. And then IDW underwent significant layoffs and it threw things off for me and plenty of other folks. I am still at IDW, but a lot of my friends and co-workers suddenly were not.
For what it's worth, I know a lot of them are still seeking employment. This includes, among others, Anna Morrow, Megan Brown, Devon Ashby, Zac Boone, Julia Borden, Keith Davidsen, Alex Hargett, Greg Gustin, Blake Kobashigawa, Jonathan Manning, Shawn Lee, Jack Levesque, Hanna Lafferty, Topher Alford, Nachie Marsham, and seriously, so many folks. I apologize to anyone I missed. If you're looking for experienced sales, marketing, production, foreign licensing, or editorial folks, there're a ton of good ones still on the market (as an aside, my pals Chris Mowry��and Caleb Goellner are also fairly freshly available).
That was pretty freshly on my mind for Becca's next event, Fangaea, that weekend. I had mentioned that last post. It went alright. I did not stay for very long because even a little one day show like that was a lot in light of what had just happened.
Within the next week, the Writers Guild of America went on strike. Currently, they are still on strike. You can check out what they're asking for here. Unsurprisingly, a lot of it boils down to fair wages, especially in the newer forms of media that have become commonplace over the past 15 years. There's more, like treating each writer in a writing team as an individual and, hey, not using AI. At the end of their negotiation table, the WGA points out that the benefits and raises they're asking for come out to about $429 million per year across all members of the guild and split between all negotiating companies. That may sound like a LOT of money, right? I checked. As of today, with it available for home release, you can still see the Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters in San Diego. It's box office is over $1.3 billion. Even when you remove the budget for the film, approximately $100 million, the proceeds of just this movie could fully fund everything the writers are asking for, multiple times. (Also, again as an aside, while the Writers Guild is performing a strike action, they can do that because they're a union and other places are increasingly seeking unionization, like SEGA of America).
So, all of that is happening BEFORE Free Comic Book Day. As you may recall, we went to Geoffrey's Comics in Torrance, CA. Becca and I both exhibited with a bunch of our friends. It was a good time, though it made for an exhausting weekend with me spending a near-sleepless night in the ER before we drove up (I was fine, best guess is some nasty inflammation, but we'll come back to this). And then the next day, we went back up to the greater Los Angeles area for a California Independent Booksellers Alliance event and the launch of Girl Taking Over: A Lois Lane Story by Sarah Kuhn, Arielle Jovellanos, and Olivia Pecini at the Ripped Bodice (trips to LA will also come up again). It made for a very busy weekend. And then...
ER time again, bay-bee! I try not to talk about this stuff publicly too much because I do believe it's our private biz, but Becca's been dealing with an ongoing health thing for over a year now and most days it is under control and better, and last month, it was pretty regularly bad for a bit. There're appointments scheduled, but it's a whole thing because the American healthcare system sucks eggs. To that end, if you are sick in San Diego, if at alllllll possible, I really don't recommend Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest. An ER so bad, we had to go twice in one day! And, as you can imagine, it also hasn't been great to our finances, nor our time, nor our mental health dealing with all of that on such a regular basis. Just a reminder that I've got a shop here and Becca has one here and a Patreon and we probably have other channels we're on. We're doing okay, and Becca's certainly in a better place with their health now, but the occasional plug probably doesn't hurt. Plus, you can get lots of cool stuff in return!
From dealing with that stress over a couple of weeks, I left Becca at home (and fortunately everything was fine that weekend) and flew off to Atlanta to go do Editor's Day at SCAD Atlanta. It was my first time on campus in a few years and, as every time I've done it, I was supremely impressed with all the amazing work of the students in the program. A big part of the day is doing portfolio reviews and it's so interesting to see the wide array of styles and interests in different parts of sequential storytelling. While I was out there, got to see my best friend in person for the first time in years and confirmed they'll be in the wedding party, so that was nice.
Then we had a couple more casual weeks. Becca's folks came into town as a late Mother's Day/early Becca's birthday celebration. Becca and I went up to LA again to celebrate their birthday with some of our friends (and, as it turns out, it feels like we're increasingly knowing folks in LA over San Diego, which is kinda weird). That was all a nice reprieve from all the comics busyness--mostly because we told our friends no business talk at the party--but was no less busy than the rest of our recent weeks.
Again, as an aside, right around then, the Screen Actors Guild authorized their own strike, joining the WGA. The Directors Guild, to my understanding, was able to enter reasonable negotiations, though many directors are still of course standing by the strike action and on the picket line. Meanwhile, many entertainment companies, be they movies, video games, or comics, have continued/started layoffs, not in reaction to any of the strikes directly, but certainly inspiring more reasons to be on the line.
Which brings us to a little over a week ago. You may be familiar with the works of cartoonist Ian McGinty. He's done licensed and original comics and animation work. By all accounts, an incredibly kind person. The sort of artist who brings out the best in his peers, going back to his SCAD days. He unexpectedly passed away on the 8th of this month and because he had been prolific and because he worked so much and because he worked in comics, the conversation did turn to how it happened.
The conversation turned to #ComicsBrokeMe on Twitter. It's a hugely important conversation for anyone in this industry to really let sink in. It is stories from creators--often young, often marginalized--talking about the ways in which the comics industry has at least mistreated and at worst physically ailed them. I've read many of them. If you can sort through the less favorable responses of "that's the way it is" or "comics has only made me stronger" or "sometimes it seems bad but then it isn't" or what have you, like I said, these are important reads of stories that're all too common, too similar. And, it isn't about dwelling on the negative--which some of the ultra-positivity I've seen about comics in it's wake seems to have misinterpreted--it's about an industry without unions, unable to go on strike, trying to come to terms with and negotiate in much the same manner that the WGA is.
Also, I went to Sonic Revolution last weekend and that was fun. And my final LA trip for a while (fingers crossed).
That's what I've been up to. That's what the industry has been up to. It has been busy and stressful for me and seemingly for lots of folks all over. All I can say is do take care of yourself to the best of your abilities, if you have the means, take care of others, and keep an eye on all of this because it is a shift waiting to happen.
Next week, if I'm actually back, we'll get back to the regular features. For now, I am going to pick Becca up from work, we're going to see Across the Spider-Verse, and I think they'll be streaming on Twitch tonight, though maybe a little late because of the movie?

2022: A milestone year in Indiana – and beyond
2022 was a milestone year for the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter and – most importantly – for the fight against this disease. It included the Chapter’s first $1 million Walk to End Alzheimer’s and the most promising news yet in dementia research.

Advocates from across Indiana urged state legislators to pass a bill requiring minimum dementia training standards for home health aides during the Virtual Indiana State Day of Action.

The Alzheimer’s Association 2022 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report was released. It found significant shortages in the dementia care workforce, both nationwide and in Indiana. According to the report, there are currently 66 geriatricians in Indiana. By 2050, the state will need 299 geriatricians to serve 10% of those 65 and older – a 353% increase.
After passing the Indiana House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support, Governor Eric Holcomb signed the dementia training bill into law.

Volunteer advocates traveled to Washington D.C. for the first in-person Advocacy Forum since before the pandemic. They met with members of Congress and their staff to advocate for making Alzheimer’s a national priority. Evansville advocate Evan Haynes-Knepper was honored with the Young Advocate of the Year award.
JUNE
We concluded our fiscal year and found that in FY22, 5,256 people in our Chapter area attended an education program, support group, or early stage activity – a 37% increase over the previous year.
Staff and volunteers attended Indy Pride, sharing information on Alzheimer’s in the LGBTQ community and raising awareness of the resources available to help all those affected. The Greater Indiana Chapter also sponsored a Hydration Station.
West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis announced that he has been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. By sharing his diagnosis, he raised awareness of the disease and helped other families know they are not alone in this journey. Later in the year, he served as honorary chair of the Greater Lafayette Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
Staff and volunteers attended the Indy Juneteenth Festival Wellness Fair at Celebration Plaza in White River State Park.
The Longest Day participants held fundraisers on and around the summer solstice. By the end of the campaign, Aug. 31, they raised more than $324,000. The top team was Spoke & Memories at more than $40,000.

The Greater Indiana Chapter once again partnered with the Indiana Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center to provide information and resources at the Indiana Black and Minority Health Fair.
A new event for The Longest Day, the Making Memories Classic pickleball tournament, was held in Greenwood. It was co-hosted by Greater Indiana Chapter board member Dr. David Mandlebaum and local pickleball pros Jade and Jackie Kawamoto. The event raised nearly $36,000.
The 2022 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC) was held in San Diego. Greater Indiana Chapter executive director Natalie Sutton was in attendance and shared her reflections on the experience.
AUGUST
Indianapolis RivALZ players and coaches held their flag football game, raising more than $78,000.
SEPTEMBER
The 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s season began and continued for six weeks across 13 Greater Indiana Chapter communities. By the end of the season, 6,842 participants raised close to $2 million.
Positive topline results were announced from a Phase 3 global clinical trial of a treatment called lecanemab. The news brought additional energy and excitement to the remaining Walks.
To mark World Alzheimer’s Day, Sept. 21, the Chapter held a special Effective Communication Strategies for Future Healthcare Workers program. Students attended virtually from across the state.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority, sponsor of the Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer’s Promise Garden, unveiled a 10-foot tall spinning Promise Garden flower in the Civic Plaza area of the Indianapolis International Airport. The display was surrounded by information about the warning signs of the disease and the Alzheimer’s Association Helpline (800.272.3900), a free resource that is available nationwide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s season wrapped up, and the Indianapolis Walk achieved a major milestone – raising more than $1 million for the first time ever.

The 2022 Chocolate Sunday brunch gala was held, raising nearly $400,000.
To mark National Family Caregivers Month, the chapter held a “Caring for the Caregiver” workshop with about 40 faith leaders in Fort Wayne. Reaching out to faith communities was identified as a top priority during a local community forum, and both parties have committed to continuing the partnership in the new year.
At the Clinical Trials on Alzheimer's Disease conference (CTAD), data from the Phase 3 global clinical trial of lecanemab confirmed this treatment changes the course of the disease in a meaningful way for people in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer's Association has called for the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) accelerated approval of lecanemab and for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to revise its coverage policy with the utmost urgency.
