No but seriously I love both of these ideas for the ship name. Tbh their names are so hard to really get a good ship portmanteau besides Ham. Sam literally has so many names porter bridges and then strand. So many to pick from. And ((SPOILERS)) Monaghan isn’t an easy name to mash together with them anyways.

I’m up for using anything really. I’d just like a tag so I can use it next month when I start writing shipping content.

A soft sigh escaped Sam’s mouth as he looked up towards the large hill, seeing Higgs sitting at the top on his lonesome. He was half-pressed to leave him there, not give a shit at what the ex-terrorist was up to, but curiosity won out in the end. Sam quietly made the trek uphill, holding onto the straps of his porter pack. He no longer worked for the UCA, but did odd jobs. Instead of standard packages, he carried mechanical parts. It wasn’t as cutthroat compared to his previous life but still had its challenges. 

Higgs didn’t give Sam acknowledgment when he heard the ex-porters footsteps from behind. He continued to stare at the sky, looking out for the first hints of sunlight. He felt cold, but it was more than welcomed compared to the stuffy Timefall shelter he had taken refuge in with Sam the previous night. Blinking, Higgs took in a deep breath and huffed when Sam sat down beside him. 

“Don’t we make a lovely couple, watching the sunrise together?” Higgs said sarcastically, earning a smirk from Sam.

“I didn’t think you liked me that much,” Sam said.

“Trust me, I don’t.” Higgs countered, once more his tone was playful. Nonetheless, there was truth to his words. Despite their mutual aid, Higgs held a lot of resentment towards him. He wouldn’t outright say it though, too proud to explain himself. 

“What are you doing up here anyhow?” Sam asked, getting to the point. 

Higgs quietly fixated his gaze on the rolling hills, making out the faint traces of giant rock that littered the terrain heading into a valley floor. There were no signs of life other than the occasional bird or two, something he enjoyed looking at given how rare they were. 

“When I escaped my daddy and saw the sun for the first time, it was grand. Nothin’ compared to it. A boy earnin’ freedom is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not even the shit that went down with Amelie could hold a torch.” Higgs murmured. 

Sam briefly tensed, relaxing as he attempted to not linger on the past. “You trying to experience it again?”

Higgs shrugged. “In a way, I guess. I dunno Bridges, I’m usually not a sentimental kind of a guy. Nostalgia must be warping my head.” 

Sam smiled briefly as Higgs gently knocked on his own skull as his body relaxed. He continued to watch for the first golden glows. It didn’t take long until the glimmers of yellow began to peak out over the horizon. The light enraptured Higgs as he stared, wishing more than anything he could be engulfed by the warmth radiating across his flesh as the rays cascaded across the lands. There was a split second where Higgs felt like he was young again. A naive boy scared shitless of the world but also feeling like he was at home. 

Sam could see the experience in Higgs’s facial expressions. How they changed from one moment to the next as his mind flooded with the memories he had. Furrowing his brows, Sam sighed and looked outward at the sun, squinting his eyes as the rays became more strong. 

“You think if we ever met at another time we could have been friends?” He asked curiously. 

Higgs, taken aback, contemplated the question before giving an answer. 

“I’d like to think so,” Higgs said softly. “We both were royally fucked growing up. Just had a different way of handlin’ it.” 

Sam gave a firm nod, then began to rise to his feet. He grunted every once in a while, adjusting the straps to his pack. Higgs looked up towards his former adversary as Sam debated with himself. 

“I gotta split. My kiddo needs me.” Sam said. 

Higgs let out a huff. “Keep the pipsqueak safe.”

The nickname made Sam smile, and then he quietly left Higgs without a further word. As he trekked down the hill and made his way onto the road, Sam looked behind him to see Higgs remained put. There was a part of Sam that wanted to invite him along, but there was too much bad blood between them still. They both couldn’t let go just yet of all the hurt they had thrown upon each other. Sam had some hope that maybe Higgs and he would see eye to eye someday.
