sohee has always been a pretty baby. everyone always told her parents so. no one had ever seen a baby more beautiful and sweet-natured, they said. she was perfect. on a whim when she was just about to turn 2, her mother entered her in a beautiful baby contest run by a famous childcare brand looking to find their next baby models. her win set her on an unexpected path of billboards and fame, the citizens of korea all knowing her name and cooing over her image before she could even form full sentences. she kept modeling and appearing in commercials throughout her childhood. she was a darling sensation in the late 90s and early 2000s, even brands like samsung sought her out for advertisements. she first realized her dream of becoming an idol when was around 5 and she had to perform a rendition of a children’s song for one of her commercials. it was her biggest hit, the catchy jingle and her cute little face boosting the company’s sales ten-fold. 

she kept modeling and acting in commercials for years, but as she got older, she began to book less and less. she was still pretty, they said, but she was losing that same toddler charm she once had. when she was 9 years old, she and her parents were approached by a scout from mgc entertainment, the company of one of the highest-selling girl groups of the time. her parents were a little hesitant, not only ready to be done with the industry they had been sucked into so suddenly, but believing sohee was too young to be a trainee. the scout was convincing enough though, telling her parents that they wanted to make her the next boa. sohee begged and begged for them to let her join, and after a week or so of consideration, finally agreed. she did an obligatory audition but was immediately accepted, the company seeking her out for her visuals and her already hefty resume as a child model. 

she enjoyed her training at first, happy that she spent her days learning to sing and dance with other kids her age. that was until one of the dance instructors began giving her special treatment. he always gave her praise in front of the class despite berating other kids, he would give her special lessons in his own studio, and eventually he began making advances on her. she didn’t understand it at first. she liked being his favorite, even though some of her friends began to turn on her because of it. she liked being praised and encouraged. but often times she was self-conscious of the way he would put his hands on her while guiding her movements, or his tone of voice when he would speak to her when they were alone. 

it got to the point where one day, she begged and begged her mom to let her stay home from practice and quit being a trainee. concerned for her daughter after her initial excitement, she eventually got the truth out of sohee and was enraged. her parents immediately took the issue to the company, but they informed them that they had signed exclusive 5-year contracts with them, including nda clauses. the company threatened the family with legal action if they continued to speak on the issue or if they pulled sohee out of the training program. unable to risk the costs, they reluctantly sent sohee back to the program. they warned her to stay away from the teacher as much as she could, but to tell no one else about the issue.

the next day after class, the teacher pulled her aside and told her that she would never make it in the industry if she couldn’t handle special treatment. that he was only helping her to reach her dreams and that every girl who had ever made it as a star had been in her position. she kept attending his lessons after that.

she was always torn. she still had a deep love for performing. she got lost in a dance or a song, relishing in the way she felt strong and impenetrable when she was on the stage. but she was slowly becoming more isolated, and the instructor made her feel wrong for wanting to chase this dream. in the 5th year of her training, the final year of her dreaded contract, one day she arrived to the studios where she had spent years practicing and found them entirely abandoned. it turns out that the company had been under investigation for fraud, money laundering, and csam related crimes for the past few months. suddenly everything that she had been working for, that she had been suffering for, disappeared before her very eyes.

it took years for her to get over the crushing loss of her dream and even begin to heal from the trauma she had experienced. 3 years after the disappearance of mgc entertainment, just after her 16th birthday, another scout approached her on the street on behalf of rainbow entertainment. she denied her at first, struggling to even hold a conversation as anxiety rubbed raw at her throat, but she took her card, if only to get away quicker. but the longer she considered it, the more she was reminded of what her dream had meant to her. her parents were hesitant at first, not quick to forget the way she was torn apart when this dream did not work out before, bit after seeing her renewed determination, they agreed. but not before hiring a lawyer to sit in on any contract signing.

she found a new life while training at rbe, a renewed passion for what she had longed for before. she still struggled with symptoms of ptsd at times, but she had found a strong support system in her friends, especially seolah who she had quickly found solace in. she was overcome with joy on their debut day, hardly unable to stop crying as her dream finally came to reality after everything she had gone through to get there.

I messed up the stitching and had to start from scratch.

Basically, upon further inspection, we'd initially sewed through just the fur. The two pieces weren't actually sewed together by their base fabric. This meant undoing both of them. Some of the threads came out easy, others were more of a pain. The end result? A pile of thread and ...

Two pieces of fur successfully detached from eachother. But this was where our (my spouse and I's) previous collab ended. They were too tired to help, so I took it upon myself and struggled for over an hour to make progress beyond combing/brushing the long fur so it exposed the clean edge of the fabric. My spouse eventually came into the kitchen to grab something to eat and noticed I was failing horribly. They instructed me to do this:

Basically, pin it together so it holds then run it through the machine on a loose stitch called a 'holding stitch'. This would allow me to get the fabric pieces lined up so I can then run it through again and sew the other side in place.

The end result. The white fur basically forms a U where the long-hair rust fur fills the gap. This hides the stitching on the inside. I ran a finer stitch on this run as instructed by my spouse ... I also borked the machine a bit but my spouse fixed it ... I think I might need to look up a sewing machine diagram because this thing is basically magic to me, and I struggled for like 45 minutes trying to figure out how to fix it, and they did it in like 15 seconds. The skill gap between us is staggering and I'm noticing that painfully during this project. Humbling moments passed and it was time to insert the wire to hold it's shape and ... this was a chore.

This was actually the most tedious part of the process, that little 'U' that the white fur made has barely enough room to hold a wire in it, but you have to work it through the fur layers. I eventually found a tactic that worked easy and slipped them through. With this in place, it had been about 4 and 1/2 hours and I needed a break. I ended up stopping here because it was also now 8pm at night.

Not the end product yet, still working on it. I plan to do more today. Next up is sewing the white faux-fur together in a way that will hold the ear shape on the inside. This is going to be an annoying stitch to do, but it's necessary. Once that's done, I have to figure out how to stitch the bottom closed while maintaining the shape. I think the wires are going to help here with maintaining the shape.

As stated before, the goal is NOT to use glue so these will stand up to a bit of punishment. These are going to be my every-day ears. However, once I figure all this out ... I kind of want to make more. Different colours too. They've so far been relatively simple to make in comparison to some other sewing projects I've laid out for myself (gods help me, I'm going to try and make a dress at some point). Plus if I can find a place that sells the fabric that doesn't cost me like ...

Yeah, the patch of fur was like cheap-ish, but shipping from Mississippi, United States is expensive for Canadians. I have to find somewhere local if I want to do more of this. However, if you're in the United States near Mississippi and you want to make an identical set, the fur is called "Gingerbread Brown Faux Fur, 2" Pile Fur Fabric, Vegan Animal Fur, Shaggy Long Pile Fabric, DIY, Fursuit, Pillow Craft Supplies" and is sold by TrendyLuxe on Etsy. I personally won't be buying from there again because it's too expensive to ship, I'll be looking for a Canadian supplier of similar products.

I'm not done with these yet, I plan to work on these more today, so I'll post another update later. These are looking awesome though.

I absolutely LOVE the idea of smart feature phones. Fuck like the Samsung Galaxy Folder 2 and Qin F22 Pro are so fucking pretty!!!! Almost all are ugly lmao. ESPECIALLY the KaiOS phones. Except for the Nokia 2720 flip. PLEASE Samsung fuck the Flip and Z Fold GIVE US A FOLDER 3 THAT'S ON PAR WITH THE S SERIES!!!!!

I actually had a dream about phones just the other night.

I've got 2: my old LG that gets hotter than the sun when you leave it running for too long, and my new 1+. I still use my LG as an alarm and for music when I take a shower, but not much else because it only has a 2 hour battery life, takes 8 hours to charge back up, and you need to leave it completely alone for the cable to remain in place while it charges.

In my dream (as a small portion of the dream between shifting scenarios) I was struggling to get it plugged back in when I suddenly noticed I had another phone sitting in a wine glass behind my LG's charging caddy. I think it was based on that new Z flip fold whatever by Samsung because it was more square than any phone I've ever owned and had buttons, actual physical buttons. I thought in my dream "if I have that, why am I still using my old LG for alarms?" and then the dream shifted to me sitting out on the lawn of my neighbor's house with a huge crowd of people. One of them was Neil Gaiman (because of a post I saw earlier that day about some guy being a freak in his ask box).

When it comes to dream interpretation, one must consider both Cause and Meaning, the former moreso than the latter. What caused me to dream about my phone now and not any sooner? Because my phone problems, whilst recurring ever since I lost my first phone at a Sam's Club, have never been reinforced daily as they have with my decision to keep using my LG despite it being in its death throes. Why focus specifically on the problem aspect if I use my phone all the time? Because any memories I have concerning what I do on my phone are not memories of the phone itself, hence Neil Gaiman being there in person rather than as text on a screen. What meaning can be ascribed to all this? Probably that I think the Z flip fold looks like a cool phone, even if I fucking hate Samsung with the same burning fury I have for Almonds, and think it'd be a decent replacement for my LG as a device without a Sim card or associated phone number.

The brain is the most complex organ in the body, and the mind is even more complex, so I think my answer is as good as any other.
