I sought out Grier because I wondered, with all the testimony emerging from actresses about sexual harassment and assault incidents they had suffered in silence for so long, what must Hollywood have been like for Grier during the alpha male chauvinist '70s culture, when she was one of the few actresses of color playing the heroine in movies like Foxy Brown and Coffy.
Her path has led her to interact with some recently fallen figures - Harvey Weinstein made the Quentin Tarantino-directed Jackie Brown, which reignited Grier's career - and even more recently, Grier said she had been set to star in the Amazon Studios series that David O. Russell was directing with Robert De Niro and Julianne Moore. That series imploded directly because of the Weinstein scandal, but she still is hopeful it will come back around as the Weinstein Company is about to be resuscitated by a female-led board and leadership. I was surprised to hear that Grier experienced relatively little sexual harassment during her rise.
There is a disturbing tale in her book about a time she was invited to Sammy Davis Jr's house where, in front of his wife Altovise, the singer became so aggressive in his attempt to bed Grier that she had to enlist Liza Minnelli and her husband Jack Haley Jr to drive her away from the estate while she hid in the back seat. "It's true. Altovise and Liza helped me. I hid in the bathroom, and Sammy came out looking for me. Liza and her husband pulled up their burgundy Rolls-Royce, where they would signal for me to run out and jump into the back seat of the car, and she'd hide me with her fur, and they'd drive me out of there." But most of the pain caused by men took place far from Hollywood.

Grier said that her saving grace during her rise was signing with APA agent John Gaines, who repped her since she moved from receptionist at AIP to a star.
You read the stories about actresses whose reps didn't have the foresight to accompany them to clandestine meetings in hotel suites, and Grier acknowledges that hers could have been a much different story if she didn't have Gaines, an agent who made sure that she didn't find herself in potentially dangerous situations when she went up for roles. Gaines, who died in 1992, also repped Steve Martin, John Candy, Tamara Dobson (Cleopatra Jones), Shaft star Richard Roundtree and Oscar-winning Shaft singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes. She was able to create a circle of trust within that group.

harassment you might think. I wonder if they saw my films and thought that I could probably beat them up. And you know, I could, because I studied enough martial arts seriously that I probably could have really hurt someone."
She has good memories of Harvey Weinstein, who with brother Bob responded to a fundraising effort to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving, by matching the entire donation, allowing for 20,000 extra dinners. "I don't mean to soften anything he might have done or who he might have hurt, but they matched that money in my honor and they didn't have to."
Grier had sympathy for each woman who swallowed the shame for decades but finally spoke out. Her own decision to disclose the rapes in her life came, she said, from counsel by Gloria Steinem and in observing Maya Angelou's experience in divulging the trauma of a childhood sexual assault. In that case, Angelou was raped by her mother's boyfriend, and she told a family member. Her attacker subsequently was killed, possibly by her uncle - an incident that so upset the future poet that she didn't speak for the next five years.
Grier kept her assaults secret for similar fears. Said Grier: "My grandfather Daddy Ray taught all us girls to hunt, fish, shoot and drive the boat and a tractor. ...If I had told my family, especially what happened when I was 6? The men in my family would have hunted those boys down, for hurting me. It would have destroyed my family, and I decided to stay quiet and see how long I can go and how much stronger I can be with this energy inside me."

Grier hopes that the women who've relived horrible memories in this #MeToo movement felt the relief she did after taking advice that Steinem gave her back when Grier became the first African-American actor to grace the Ms. magazine cover, long before Grier was ready to talk about her sexual assaults.
Grier had a romantic life where she fell in love with Abdul-Jabbar, Prinze and Pryor but stopped short of marriage to all of them because she would have had to become something she wasn't.
That began when she fell in love with UCLA basketball star Lew Alcindor. After he changed his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and converted to a Muslim, he pressed her to marry. But the required submissiveness was just too much for her. One fateful morning he told her that an arranged marriage was set for him for 2pm that day, with a woman who was a converted Muslim. He would keep the date unless Grier agreed to marry him and embrace his religion. Unwilling to live a subservient life where everything but her hands would be covered when seen in public, Grier basically told him, congratulations on your big day. "Without all of that, he was the perfect man. He loved jazz. He loved sports. He was an academic. He could have been that first love," Grier says.

lost too much.' I think, 'How do I help this man who is so despondent, and who has a gun?' Grier got him money that she hoped would not go to drugs. "I was so compelled to just run over there, but I just didn't feel I could," she said. "I felt there's danger that I can't control. Days later, a friend told her Prinze had succumbed to his demons and killed himself. "I didn't know how to stop him, and I didn't know if I would have survived trying."
Her relationship with Pryor also disintegrated over his drug problem. This after they had a long romantic relationship in which she helped Pryor overcome insecurities that included illiteracy - she helped him learn to read, and they settled into a real home life that settled a comic who'd famously grown up in a brothel. But the bad influences around Pryor, and drugs, got the best of him. She received a similar crisis call as she got from Prinze, only this one came from Sidney Poitier, who was directing Pryor and Gene Wilder in 1980's Stir Crazy.
'" Pam, Richard's high, and we're like 10 weeks behind and they're going to pull the plug on the movie,' Sidney says. 'Gene Wilder...everybody's mad. Everybody's upset. Everyone's afraid they're going to lose their jobs. Can you come down here and talk to Richard? I think you're the only person who can reach him.'

"Just as I couldn't change the attacks or the people who attacked me. I couldn't change Richard. I couldn't change Freddie or Kareem. And I realized it's not about changing other people, it's about changing myself. And that is what I want to tell people with this, that there will be pain in life, but you can survive it and it will make you stronger and protect you from other instances. I wanted to save their lives, but I had to save my own."

The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. Very well captured with no dropouts, no obstruction, and no washout. The stage is filmed directly most of the time; the screens are occasionally filmed, usually when the actors are not onstage. No dropouts and no obstruction. Schrank), Lee Sellars (Krupke), Greg Vinkler (Doc) NOTES: Stunning production of this revival. Josefina and Karen still steal the show. Peggy Day, 86

Mrs. Peggy Creasman Day, age 86 of North Wilkesboro passed away Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at Wilkes Sr. Village, on what would have been her and Frank's 64th wedding anniversary. Peggy has relocated yet once again, this time to her eternal home in heaven to be with her Lord and her childhood sweetheart.
Funeral Services were February 22, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Bert Young and Dr. Dean Simpson officiating. Entombment was in Scenic Memorials Gardens Mausoleum.
Mrs. Day was born April 8, 1933 in Davidson County to Roy L and Pauline Kindley Creasman. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was in the Euzelian Sunday School class.
When Peggy was a teenager she worked for Belk's and Penny's on holidays and weekends. She graduated from North Wilkesboro High School in 1952 and attended Woman's College in Greensboro (now U.N.C Greensboro) and worked as a secretary in North Wilkesboro at Wilkes Auto Sales from 1953 until 1955 and she also worked at Modern Globe.
Having met while sledding in the eighth grade, Frank and Peggy quickly became an item; they were inseparable for nearly 60 years. She married the love of her life, Frank Day, in 1956. Peggy did everything with Frank, until he predeceased her nearly a decade ago. After she married Frank she became a mother and homemaker. Then she went back to work at Nancy King Textiles.
Nearly thirty years ago, Frank and Peggy Day took the empty Rose's building, once the retail hub of the Wilkesboro's, and turned it into a Victorian themed mini-mall. It was their hangout and a retirement passion after many decades of manufacturing. The Melody Square Mall became an active second hub of the downtown from its inception.
In the wake of Frank's death, Peggy kept the Mall and her retail store going for many years. For her, the mall and the store were so much more than just a business. Frank and Peggy helped dozens of businesses get their start inside this Victorian village. Most of these new business owners, and their regular customer, became like family to them.
Likewise, they also enjoyed seeing friends and acquaintances drop in. It was like the venerable country store where folks came for more than merely shopping and eating. Many pulled up on a bench to talk, or just sit and watch people go by. Others used the pleasant space to walk laps around the corridors. The mall has changed hands. And now, Peggy has moved on to sled once again with the love of her life.
She loved the Lord, her church and her family with all her heart. She loved and was loved by many friends.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband; Frank G. Day.
She is survived by a daughter; Melody Lynn Rasmussen and husband Gerald of Wilmington, NC and a son; Tim Day and wife Diana of Marietta, GA, four grandchildren; Davis Day, Cameron Day and wife Emily, Alexander Lee Rasmussen and wife Shaina, Nicholas Paul Rasmussen and three step-grandchildren; Joanna Toso, Grace Toso and Jared Toso.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Helping Hands Ministries, POB 5037 Statesville NC, 28687, or http://www.hhmworldmissions.com/ or to Samartians Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

Lights Out: Nat "King" Cole February 5 - March 17, 2019
Gil Cates Theater
Written by Colman Domingo & Patricia McGregor Directed by Patricia McGregor Music Supervision by John McDaniel Featuring Gisela Adisa, Connor Amacio Matthews, Bryan Dobson, Dulé Hill, Ruby Lewis, Zonya Love, Marcia Rodd, Brandon Ruiter & Daniel J. Watts
“In this electrifying exploration into the soul of an American icon, Tony and Olivier Award nominee Colman Domingo and Patricia McGregor imagine Nat “King” Cole as he faces the final Christmastime broadcast of his groundbreaking variety show and weighs the advice of his friend Sammy Davis Jr. to “go out with a bang.” Cole’s hit songs, such as “Nature Boy,” “It’s a Good Day” and “Smile,” underscore this boldly original homage to the renowned performer who struggled to break through America’s color barrier in the early days of television. A feast for the eyes, ears and soul, the musical incorporates lively choreography by Broadway veteran Edgar Godineaux and dazzling tap dance steeped in politics and pizzazz created by renowned hoofer Jared Grimes. “[X]

Tigers lose 7-6 in extras for second straight day
MAY 27, 1968
WP: Clyde Wright (4-1) LP: Daryl Patterson (1-2)
The Detroit Tigers lost 7-6 in extra innings for the second straight day and saw their lead in the American League pennant chase reduced to just one-half game.
This time it was the California Angels defeating the Tigers (24-16) by that same 7-6 margin, in the opening game of a four-game series at Anaheim Stadium. The Tigers have now lost four of five games.
Tom Satriano won the game for the Angels (21-22) in the bottom of the 12th inning off Daryl Patterson with an RBI double that scored Rick Reichardt.
The Angels battered Tigers’ starting pitcher Mickey Lolich, taking leads of 3-0 and 5-2. Lolich gave up 10 hits, five runs and recorded six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings pitched. The 10 hits are the most given up by Lolich this season and is the third time in his six starts in May that he’s given up five runs.
The Angels three through six hitters of Chuck Hinton, Reichardt, Bubba Morton and Bobby Trevino went a combined 12-for-22 with five RBI, five runs scored and four doubles.
The Tigers trailed from the start, with the Angels scoring single runs in the first, second and third inning off Lolich. An Eddie Matthews two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning off of Angels’ starting pitcher Sammy Ellis, briefly cut their deficit to 3-2.
The Angels responded by chasing Lolich with two outs in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Reichardt and RBI single by Trevino.
Matthews went deep off of Ellis for the second time to lead off the top of the seventh inning, ending Ellis’ day. Following a Don Wert double off of reliever Minnie Rojas, Norm Cash briefly gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead with a pinch-hit two-run home run off Rojas.
Cash, Matthews and Tommy Matchick all had two hits for the Tigers.
Ellis gave up five hits, four runs, one walk, two home runs and recorded four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Following Rojas’ struggles, the combination of Jim Weaver and Clyde Wright pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Angels.
Morton tied the game at six with a two-out single that scored Jim Fregosi off of Tigers’ reliever Pat Dobson,
The Angels had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, having the winning run at third base with one out. Pinch-hitting for Weaver, Roger Repoz drew a one-out walk off Fred Lasher. Repoz then stole second base and advanced to third base after Tigers’ catcher Bill Freehan’s throw to second base sailed into center field.
Lasher worked out of the jam, getting Paul Schaal to fly out to right field on a ball that was not deep enough for Repoz to tag up and score from third and got Fregosi to ground out to third, ending the threat.
The Tigers had multiple opportunities to win the game, placing runners in scoring position in the top of the ninth and 12th innings. Wert lined out to first base in the ninth, seeing Dick Tracewski doubled off second base, following a leadoff double.
Following a two-out single by Matchick in the 12th that put Patterson at second base, Wright retired Stanley with a flyball to center field, ending the Tigers’ threat.
The loss put the second-place Baltimore Orioles (24-17) just one-half game behind the Tigers for first-place and the third-place Cleveland Indians (24-18) within one game, after a 3-1 road win over the Minnesota Twins.
Game two of the four-game series is Tuesday with rookie left-hander Les Cain (1-0, 0.47 ERA) taking the ball for the Tigers against Angels left-hander George Brunet (5-3, 2.19 ERA).

Worst and Best Phoenix Area Restaurant Inspections
These restaurants in Maricopa County were recently inspected by the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department. If you want to know more about how I determine which restaurants get published on my list, you can read about my methodology here.
Phoenix Area Restaurants That Failed
In the table below I include restaurants that received a D grade (there is no F grade) from the Environmental Services Inspector.
That means that the establishment had three or more serious violations of the health code that might result in patrons being exposed to foodborne illness. A restaurant that has its licence immediately suspended as a result of an inspection may also be included here. The management may correct the defect, and could receive a perfect inspection when the inspector returns.

NOTES: Full HD stageshot filmed from the front orchestra! This is fairly better than the other stageshot, including less heads, more facial features, but one major head that's sometimes filmed around whenever the master isn't wandering downward. Great video quality overall and it includes full Act One and Act Two starting at Beetlejuice's entrance after Girl Scout through Curtain Call!

Beetlejuice - Broadway - March, 2019 (Preview) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), Rob McClure (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Leslie Kritzer (Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Kelvin Moon Loh (Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: Previews! This is probably my most obstructed bootleg ever. When I could get zooms they’re pretty (and I’m really trying my hardest for both Sophia and Kerry - “Dead Mom” looks GREAT and is really consistent), but I would probably consider this more like highlights with how many heads keep popping up. I don’t love it, but you can keep up with what is happening and see the WILD effects they have going on here...which is good enough for now. Video starts at “Ready, Set, Not Yet” and is complete from there. And honestly this video (and this show) is worth it just for “Dead Mom.”
Beetlejuice - Broadway - November, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT: MP4 (HD) CAST: Will Blum (u/s Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), David Josefsberg (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Kim Sava (u/s Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Sean Montgomery (u/s Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: A few heads show up briefly and a quick video drop after the first two songs. Covers from opening song to final applause, great shot.

NOTES: YouTube rip of various clips of Dana Steingold in the role of Lydia. Highlights include Invisible, Dead Mom, Home, and curtain call.

NOTES: Full HD stageshot of this incredible show! Filmed from the rear orchestra without zooms, with a lot of head obstructions.

NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the incredible Presley Ryan as Lydia and David’s first week as Adam! Filmed from the left orchestra without obstructions with a mix of wides, mediums, and closeups. This is hands down the best video of the show to date. Starts about 3 minutes into performance (mid whole being dead thing).

NOTES: Most the first hour Act 1 is covered up or shot blind. When there’s something to see, it’s nice. The fidelity is cleaned up from the unfortunate dark ages of when it was shot, but the audio is a touch harsh.

NOTES: Nicely filmed from the balcony with a good balance of close-ups and full stage shots, although a little shaky at times. This is the first (and so far, only) video with Kiril Kulish in the role of Billy. Unfortunately about 15 minutes of the show is missing due to battery issues. What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

NOTES: Notes: Listed in various places as both 3-7-2011 and 3-11-2011... it's due to a labeling error by the master. They are the same capture it's just the DVD Menu shows the capture date as 3-11-2011 while the poster at the beginning says 3-7-2011 A nice capture of this hilarious original show. A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

NOTES: A fantastic capture of the second tour cast. This is the first known dvd of the 2NT, and the cast doesn’t disappoint. David and Cody are strong leads with great voices and comedic timing. Pierce is perfect as McKinley. Tallia also does a great job; she has a strong belt and does an endearing rendition of Sal Tlay Ka Siti. This is a very nice capture with no obstruction or blackouts, and only a bit of washout in superwide shots of high-contrast scenes. The video is very steady and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call.

NOTES: Act 1 and first few minutes of Act 2 (until Spooky Mormon Hell Dream) only. Vertical; filmed from a mobile phone. Camera wanders a lot. Lots of washouts and no zooms but audio is clear quality.

NOTES: Workshop all staged on barebones sets. Breakfast at Tiffany's - Broadway - March 9, 2013 (Lanelle's master) FORMAT: VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Cory Michael Smith (Fred), Emilia Clarke (Holly)
