I picked up this awesome anthology and got autographs from some of my favorite authors. However, I'm the only one to get a drawing of a gingerbread man on my copy. Can't wait to read it! #TotallyUnique #Book #JimButcher #SamKnight #KevinJAnderson

The sing-sing is a way to celebrate. It could be anything, boys coming into manhood, a wedding, some victory or another over local rivals. In Igai, the other day, an isolated village on the banks of the Sepik river in north eastern Papua New Guinea, it was the arrival of a set of solar lights. That was worth celebrating in itself. Igai, like almost all rural villages in PNG, has no electricity to speak of. But what made this delivery special was that it was the first time that people in Igai have benefited directly from the sale of carbon credits derived from their forests. It’s what I’ve been reporting on in PNG: a new UN scheme to try and slow down deforestation by paying forest communities to avoid carbon emissions. It’s a very 21st century concept, in what can feel like a very ancient place.

It’s been intense, put it that way, to be reporting on deforestation and climate change when the El Nino drought is in full swing in the South Pacific. For months I’d been looking forward to visiting the country’s 19 million hectares of lowland rainforest: dark cathedral glades of wet leaves. Instead, the rivers have been low and the air is dry. I’ve barely seen a mosquito. Papua New Guinea typically gets more 100mm of rain every month of the year. In many parts of the country, there have only been a few showers since July. As we headed out to the forests west of Madang, in the north of the country, the air was laced with smoke from fires and we drove for miles among sago palms, banana plants, ginger and bamboo curled in the heat, turning brown and preparing to die. I’ve been spending time with Professor George Weiblen of the University of Minnesota, who has been studying PNG’s forests since 1992. He trod among the dry leaves and looked up at the thinning canopy trees, which were shedding their leaves because of the lack of water. “This is just crazy,” he kept saying. “Crazy.”
