it sucks because when i, a butch lesbian, claim a male character as “a woman to me” it’s because i’m so desperate to see myself that i will warp the definition to find something even close to the way i see myself. and then there are some characters are written as men but who i also think have legitimately interesting relationships with gender in the text, and that’s me as a trans person legitimately exploring that. but this means that the people who lose themselves over male characters and go “he’s basically a woman because uhhh i feel bad for him” see me and go “we’re the same” NO WE ARE NOT

#thinking about this especially after posting a bunch of butch emmett stuff bc like #that is very context specific as well! that is specifically taking place in the theatrical realm where the portrayal of a character #is not fixed and is open to interpretation by each actor/director/production #anyway it’s wild that i have to say this but some of y’all are way too sympathetic towards dennis reynolds #and this is coming from someone who overidentified with him in high school when i was very closeted and repressing all my shit #same with kendall roy. again said as someone who has identified w him a lot #and i’ll be the first to admit that niles crane is far from perfect
