Any dental issue or issue that requires prompt attention, consideration and intercession of a dental specialist is a dental crisis. It is essential to recollect that each dental issue isn’t a crisis. Average instances of dental crises incorporate uncontrolled draining from the mouth, any wrecked or broke facial bone, intense aggravation in the tooth or the gum that doesn’t wilt away even with pain relievers.

Emergency Dentistry Charlotte: Common Warning Signs to See an Emergency Dentist
Dental emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and knowing when to seek immediate help from an emergency dentist can prevent further complications and alleviate pain. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, injury, or infection, recognizing the warning signs of a dental emergency is crucial. In this article, we’ll discuss the key signs that indicate you need to visit an emergency dentist and explain why timely treatment is essential, especially if you’re looking for emergency dentistry in Charlotte.
What Is Emergency Dentistry?
An emergency dentist is a trained dental professional who provides immediate care for urgent dental issues. These can include situations such as severe toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, oral infections, or other acute problems causing discomfort or pain. Emergency dentists are often available outside regular business hours to accommodate urgent cases, including evenings, weekends, and even holidays.
Common Warning Signs of a Dental Emergency
If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be time to seek emergency dentistry in Charlotte:
1. Severe Tooth Pain That Won’t Go Away
Toothaches are one of the most common reasons people seek emergency dental care. While occasional discomfort may not be a cause for concern, persistent and increasing pain could signal an underlying issue like an infection, abscess, or tooth decay. Ignoring it can lead to more severe problems, such as spreading infection or damage to the surrounding teeth.
2. Loose or Wobbly Teeth
Healthy adult teeth should never feel loose or unstable. If you notice one or more teeth becoming loose without any injury, it could be a sign of advanced gum disease or another underlying condition. If left untreated, this could result in tooth loss. An emergency dentist can assess the situation and take steps to save the tooth if possible.
3. Swelling in the Jaw or Face
Swelling in the jaw or face is often a sign of a serious infection, such as an abscess. Abscesses are pockets of pus caused by bacterial infections, and they can develop at the root of a tooth or in the gums. This condition requires immediate attention, as it can spread to other parts of your body, including vital organs. Seek emergency dental care if you notice any swelling, as this could prevent the infection from worsening.
4. Knocked-Out or Broken Teeth
Accidents or injuries can cause teeth to be knocked out or broken. In these cases, acting quickly can mean the difference between saving or losing the tooth. If a tooth is knocked out, rinse it gently with water, avoid touching the root, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If that’s not an option, store it in milk or saliva and see an emergency dentist immediately.
5. Excessive Bleeding from Gums
If your gums are bleeding excessively, especially after brushing or flossing, this could indicate a serious condition like gum disease. While some bleeding may occur if you are just starting a new flossing routine, persistent or heavy bleeding accompanied by gum pain and swelling could be an emergency situation that requires immediate attention.
6. A Metallic Taste in Your Mouth
A sudden, strange metallic taste in your mouth can be a sign that a filling or crown has come loose. If left untreated, this can expose the sensitive parts of your tooth, leading to pain or infection. It’s important to visit an emergency dentist to have the filling or crown replaced or repaired as soon as possible.
7. Lingering Sores That Won’t Heal
Canker sores or mouth ulcers are common and typically go away on their own within a week or two. However, if you notice a sore that lingers for several weeks or gets worse over time, it could be a sign of a more serious condition, such as oral cancer. It’s critical to seek a professional evaluation if the sore doesn’t heal.
8. Headaches, Teeth Grinding, and Jaw Pain
Chronic headaches and jaw pain may be signs of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or excessive teeth grinding (bruxism). These conditions can lead to damaged teeth and severe discomfort. An emergency dentist can help identify the cause of the pain and recommend solutions such as a custom mouthguard to prevent further damage.
Why Immediate Dental Care Matters
Timely intervention can prevent serious dental issues from escalating. If you’re in pain or dealing with any of the above symptoms, you shouldn’t wait to see a dentist. Emergency dentistry in Charlotte offers immediate treatment options to address your urgent needs, minimizing discomfort and preventing long-term complications.
What to Do Before You Visit an Emergency Dentist
In many dental emergencies, taking immediate steps can improve your chances of saving a tooth or preventing further damage:
For knocked-out teeth: Try to place the tooth back in the socket or store it in milk until you can see a dentist.
For severe pain: Use a cold compress and over-the-counter pain relievers to manage discomfort until your appointment.
For swelling: Apply a cold compress and avoid lying flat, as this can worsen swelling.

Still thinking about which patients Carlisle has lost and can never forget...
----------------------------------
first
Edward is exasperating Carlisle (as usual) by putting him on a pedestal (as usual). An excerpt from this chapter of 1950, Edward POV. (They're talking about Carlisle's self-control as a newborn.)
"Son, what do you think would have happened if that herd of deer hadn't come when it did? You know I was near the breaking point. What if it had been a human family, instead? With children?"
I winced, unable to imagine it. "You would have fed."
"Yes, I would have. And I don't think I ever would have recovered from that; it would have destroyed me. I can easily see how that desolation would have led to a future similar to the one Alice saw you create."
"But it didn't."
"No, but that was the path I was on. All I'm asking is that you acknowledge that you and I wrestle with the same challenges... the same monster, as you call it. Of course I'm pleased you have found some inspiration because of my own life, but please, Edward, don't put me on a pedestal. I've had centuries to work on my self-control, and it's been just as real a struggle as your own." He paused. I'm going to show you something.
His mind blurred backward through time, past the memory he had recently showed of him struggling briefly with his thirst as he stitched up the girl's arm. Now he was standing in the shadows, trembling with desire as he watched a barber extract a tooth with bloodied hands. Another blur, and he was crouching down in the bushes beside a thatched house that held a woman screaming in labor. Now he was standing frozen in the midst of a crowd, oblivious to the shouts going on around him as he stared, watching two boxers beat each other bloody. Now he was kneeling over the body of a soldier who had just been killed, leaning his face close to the wound and taking deep, painful breaths. I saw that last image repeated dozens of times. I knew I would need to desensitize myself to an extreme degree if I had any hope of practicing medicine. Of course there was no such thing as stored blood back then. I had to go and find it, freshly flowing. I went wherever I thought I might find someone bleeding: saloons, sickrooms, battlefields… I put a lot of people in danger, Edward. I don't know if it was the right thing to do.
"I always thought… why haven't you ever showed me these things before?"
He raised an eyebrow. "I didn't want to give you any ideas."
I nodded sheepishly, watching in fascination as he showed me more of these memories. He really had come close to losing it, several times.
"But the worst time wasn't my doing at all," he said. Now I saw the stone walls of Volterra in his memory.
I grimaced. "Feeding time?"
"No. I was always careful to absent myself during that particular ritual. I was studying in the smaller library one day when I suddenly caught the scent of fresh blood out in the hall. A human man was screaming. I assumed it was just someone having a meal. But the door was thrown open…"
He trailed off, letting the memories speak for themselves. The door opened to reveal Aro standing there, a dripping knife in one hand and a thrashing human in the other. He smiled at Carlisle, tossed the human inside, and shut the door. Carlisle flew backwards away from the man, holding his hand over his nose and mouth.
"The man pleaded for help," Carlisle recalled bitterly. "And I knew enough, from the little training I had already had, to try and save him. But I couldn't touch him. I couldn't even do him the kindness of easing his passing. There was just too much blood, and it was so unexpected, and I was untried… I just couldn't. I was sure that if I moved an inch, toward him or toward the door, my body would betray me. I would feed.
"So I just stood there. I watched him bleed to death on the floor." It was awful. I couldn't even speak one word of comfort to him; I was too afraid to uncover my nose and mouth. He died with his hand stretched out toward me, still hoping I would do something to save him. The accusation in his eyes was terrible.
It took Carlisle a moment to come back to the present. "He was, in a way, my first patient... the first patient I ever lost. And I can never forget his face."

Oooh the number 7 "there are still things left to say" thing could be!!!! Devastating!
This is so terribly late and I am so terribly sorry! Have a little Dreamling blurb, angst with a hopeful ending:
Hob had regrets, some far deeper than others. He was only a man: neither wholly good nor wholly bad, and he knew enough to know just how little he knew, comparatively. He did what he could to make amends, or, failing the ability to do so, to be a better man when faced with a similar situation in the future. This was not to say that he did not occasionally dream of those regrets: what could have been, what should have been, and what never was.
He had dreamt of it for nearly a week straight, with minor variations: a meeting, one hundred and thirty-three years ago, that he tried very hard not to think too much about while he was awake. It was like prodding a loose tooth, worrying at something that felt out of place before the sharp stab of pain that followed.
In his dreams, he followed the man he dared to call lonely, dared to name friend, further down the street instead of standing his ground. He reached for him, his arm, his hand, even the sleeve of his coat, only to find that he was as insubstantial as mist, slipping through his fingers like sand. His pride left him in each and every dream, as he found himself near begging each time: “Don’t just leave. There are still things left to say.” His stranger never replied.
The last time - although he did not know it was the last, then - he had the dream, it changed. He caught the other man’s arm and, in his shock, nearly dropped it immediately. The face that turned towards him was undeniably his stranger’s, although the look was different, and his eyes—
“What would you say, Hob Gadling? What more is there?”
Startled and heartsick, after nights of reliving his own mistakes, turning over each word he said as if he could find the flaw in it, extract it, and make them whole again, Hob could be nothing but honest.
“What else is there but to tell you I was trying to say that I was lonely, too? That I wanted to call you my friend if I could not call you by your name? That I would have listened to you, had you ever wanted to speak to me beyond asking if I still wished to live?” His grasp on his arm turned tighter, as if he was afraid he would throw him off.
“What must I do, to be the object of your attention for longer than an hour? Name it, and I will do it, gladly. I have spent each of our meetings falling more in love with you, and I cannot endure much more. Tell me there is even a chance you feel the same, and I will wait for as long as it takes for you to return. Or tell me you do not now and never will feel a thing for me beyond curiosity, tell me my life is nothing but a diverting game for you, and let me go.”
Hob woke the next morning, dream already fading from his memory, leaving behind a vague feeling of loneliness that continued through the day. It was not something he was unfamiliar with, and he made up his mind to spend the afternoon at the pub, working his way through his pile of ungraded papers. Perhaps, if he was lucky, he might see someone he knew, and invite them to join him for a drink.
Footsteps stopped in front of his table as he finished marking the page in front of him. When he looked up, meeting the eyes of his stranger again for the first time in over a century in the waking world, he made up his mind: this time, he would not leave anything unsaid.
Feel like sending in an angst prompt? Find the list this came from here!

Maintaining a Healthy Smile: Tips from a Dentist Near Me
Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them, often causing significant discomfort and stress. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a knocked-out tooth, or an infection, timely care is essential to alleviate pain and prevent further complications. A dentist near me can provide prompt, professional assistance during these critical situations, ensuring the best possible outcome for your oral health.
Understanding Dental Emergencies
Recognizing what constitutes a dental emergency is the first step in seeking help. Common emergencies include severe toothaches, broken or cracked teeth, lost fillings, and gum injuries. Infections, such as abscesses, can also be life-threatening if left untreated. Each of these scenarios requires immediate attention to address pain, preserve oral structures, and prevent complications.
A local dentist is your go-to expert for assessing the severity of your condition and providing the necessary treatment. Knowing that help is nearby offers peace of mind and ensures that you receive care without unnecessary delays.
The Role of a Local Dentist in Immediate Care
When an emergency strikes, visiting a dentist close to home or work can make all the difference. Local dentists are often equipped to handle a range of urgent dental issues, offering same-day appointments or emergency slots to accommodate patients in distress.
For example, if you have a toothache caused by decay or infection, a dentist can provide relief by treating the underlying issue. Whether it involves a filling, a root canal, or an extraction, the goal is to stop the pain and restore your oral health. Similarly, for a knocked-out tooth, a dentist can re-implant it if you seek care quickly, usually within an hour of the incident.
How Prompt Treatment Prevents Long-Term Problems
Delaying treatment for dental emergencies can lead to severe consequences. For instance, an untreated infection can spread to other parts of the body, posing serious health risks. Similarly, neglecting a cracked tooth can result in further damage or loss of the tooth altogether.
A dentist near you will focus not only on resolving the immediate issue but also on preventing future complications. They might recommend follow-up care, such as crowns or other restorative treatments, to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy after the emergency is addressed.
Emergency Dental Care for Children
Dental emergencies involving children require special attention. Active kids often experience injuries while playing sports or engaging in other activities. Broken teeth, oral cuts, or dislodged teeth are common occurrences.
A pediatric dentist near you can provide the necessary care to address these issues in a child-friendly manner. Their expertise ensures that young patients feel comfortable during the process, minimizing fear and promoting long-term dental health habits.
Access to Advanced Tools and Techniques
Modern dental practices are equipped with advanced tools and technologies that enable efficient diagnosis and treatment of emergencies. Digital X-rays, for example, allow dentists to quickly identify the root cause of pain or damage. Laser dentistry may be used to treat soft tissue injuries with minimal discomfort.
Choosing a local dentist who keeps up with the latest advancements ensures that you receive high-quality care even in emergency situations. Their familiarity with your dental history also contributes to personalized and effective treatment.
The Importance of a Dental Emergency Plan
Being prepared for dental emergencies can save time and reduce stress. Establishing a relationship with a trusted local dentist ensures that you know whom to call in urgent situations. Many dental offices provide after-hours contact information or emergency helplines to assist patients outside of regular operating hours.
Additionally, keeping basic information on hand, such as the dentist’s phone number and address, makes it easier to act quickly when an issue arises.
Preventing Future Emergencies
While some dental emergencies are unavoidable, others can be prevented with regular checkups and proper oral hygiene practices. Visiting your dentist for routine exams allows them to identify potential problems early, such as weakened teeth or gum issues, and address them before they escalate.
A dentist near you can also provide guidance on protecting your teeth during physical activities. For instance, wearing a custom mouthguard can prevent sports-related injuries, while a nightguard can protect against damage caused by teeth grinding.
Why Choose a Dentist Near You for Emergencies
Selecting a dentist in your vicinity ensures that you receive timely care when it matters most. Local practices are often designed to accommodate the needs of their community, offering flexible scheduling and personalized attention. Proximity also eliminates the stress of traveling long distances during an emergency, allowing you to focus on your recovery.
By choosing a local dentist, you build a relationship with a professional who understands your unique oral health needs. This connection fosters trust and ensures that you receive reliable care in both routine and emergency situations.
Conclusion
During an emergency oral issue, finding a reliable dentist near me is crucial for alleviating pain, addressing the problem, and preventing long-term complications. From treating infections to managing injuries, a trusted local dentist plays an invaluable role in restoring and maintaining your oral health.
When emergencies arise, quick action can make all the difference. Having a plan in place and knowing where to turn ensures that you receive the care you need without unnecessary delays. By prioritizing regular dental visits and staying prepared for unexpected issues, you can protect your smile and overall well-being.

Emergency Dental Care: When Tooth Pain Can’t Wait
There’s a certain helplessness that comes with tooth pain—a sharp, unrelenting reminder that something is wrong, demanding your attention when you least expect it. Perhaps it started as a dull ache, easily ignored amidst the demands of everyday life, but now, the pain has intensified, making even the simple act of speaking or eating unbearable. In these moments of desperation, all you seek is relief—immediate, compassionate care that can restore your sense of comfort and calm. When such an emergency strikes, ParkSide Dental in Brooklyn is ready to help, offering same-day emergency dental care near me for those who need it most.
Tooth pain is not just a physical sensation; it’s an emotional experience that can bring feelings of fear, frustration, and anxiety. A severe toothache doesn’t respect your schedule—it strikes in the middle of the night, during important meetings, or when you’re far from the familiarity of home. The sudden onset of intense pain can be overwhelming, making it difficult to focus on anything else.
But you don’t have to suffer in silence. At ParkSide Dental, our team understands that dental emergencies are not just about fixing a tooth—they are about relieving the emotional toll of pain, fear, and uncertainty. We offer same-day appointments, walk-in services, and the reassurance that when you’re in pain, you will not be left waiting.
The Urgency of Tooth Pain
When tooth pain hits, it can be debilitating. A throbbing, aching, or sharp sensation in your mouth can turn even the smallest tasks—chewing, talking, smiling—into painful challenges. But beyond the immediate discomfort, tooth pain can be a sign of a more serious issue that requires prompt attention. Some common causes of sudden tooth pain include:
Cavities: Untreated tooth decay can lead to severe pain, especially if the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth.
Infections: A dental abscess, which is an infection of the tooth or gums, can cause excruciating pain, swelling, and even fever. If left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body, becoming a serious health risk.
Cracked or Broken Teeth: Whether due to injury, biting down on something hard, or natural wear and tear, a cracked or broken tooth can expose the sensitive inner layers of the tooth, causing intense pain.
Lost Fillings or Crowns: When a filling or crown falls out, the exposed tooth can become extremely sensitive to temperature changes, pressure, and even air.
While over-the-counter pain relief can provide temporary respite, it does not address the underlying cause of the problem. That’s where emergency dental care comes in. At ParkSide Dental, we believe that no one should have to endure tooth pain longer than necessary. Our skilled dentists are ready to assess your situation, provide an accurate diagnosis, and offer fast, effective treatment to relieve your pain and restore your dental health.
Compassionate Care When You Need It Most
The fear of going to the dentist is a common experience for many people, especially in moments of acute pain. Dental emergencies can amplify this fear—what will the treatment involve? Will it hurt even more? How long will it take to find relief? These concerns are valid, and at ParkSide Dental, we address them with care, compassion, and professionalism.
When you walk into our Brooklyn office for emergency dental care, you’re not just another patient; you’re a person in need of help, and we’re here to provide it. Our team understands the anxiety and stress that dental pain can cause, and we make it our mission to create a comforting and reassuring environment from the moment you arrive.
We take the time to listen to your concerns, explain the treatment options, and walk you through each step of the process so that there are no surprises. Whether it’s an emergency root canal to save an infected tooth, a temporary filling to address decay, or immediate extraction to relieve pain, our goal is to restore your oral health and give you the peace of mind you deserve.
Same-Day Dental Appointments and Walk-In Services
Emergencies don’t follow a schedule, and when tooth pain strikes, waiting for days or even weeks for a dental appointment is not an option. At ParkSide Dental, we offer same-day dental appointments and accept walk-in patients for emergency care. We know how urgent dental pain can be, and our team is dedicated to providing prompt treatment so you can get back to your life without delay.
Whether you’ve cracked a tooth while eating dinner, lost a filling in the middle of the night, or woken up with unbearable pain, we’re here to help. Our office in Brooklyn is equipped to handle a wide range of dental emergencies, ensuring that you receive timely and effective care. Simply call us or walk in, and we’ll prioritize your needs.
Preventing Future Dental Emergencies
While not all dental emergencies can be avoided, regular dental check-ups and cleanings can help catch issues before they become urgent. At ParkSide Dental, we encourage our patients to schedule routine appointments to maintain their oral health and prevent problems from escalating.
If you’ve experienced tooth pain or a dental emergency in the past, it’s especially important to stay on top of your oral health. Cavities, infections, and gum disease often develop slowly, and regular visits to the dentist can ensure that these issues are treated early, before they lead to more serious pain and complications.
When Every Moment Counts, We’re Here for You
Tooth pain can feel like a solitary experience, a battle between you and the relentless ache that won’t let go. But you don’t have to face it alone. At ParkSide Dental, we understand the urgency of your situation, and we’re here to help you find relief—swiftly, compassionately, and with the highest standard of care.
When your smile is in distress, every moment counts. Whether you’re experiencing sudden tooth pain, swelling, or any other dental emergency, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Visit ParkSide Dental at https://parksidedentalny.com, where same-day appointments and walk-in care ensure that when you need help the most, we’ll be ready to restore your smile and relieve your pain.

Risks of Ignoring Dental Emergencies Near Me
Have you ever had a really bad toothache or a scary dental problem? It’s no fun, right? Sometimes, it seems like a little problem, but ignoring it can worsen things. At Parkwood Dental, we know how important it is to fix dental problems right away. Let’s talk about why you shouldn’t ignore a dental emergency and why quickly finding a "dentist emergency near me" is super important.
What is a Dental Emergency?
Knocked-Out Tooth — If you accidentally knock out a tooth, immediate action is crucial to save it.
Severe Toothache — Persistent, severe tooth pain can indicate a serious underlying issue that needs prompt treatment.
Broken Crown — A broken or dislodged crown can expose the tooth to damage and infection.
Potential Risks of Ignoring Dental Emergencies
Don't be a hero! Ignoring a dental emergency won’t make it disappear. Dental issues could lead to far more severe consequences. By seeking early treatment from a "dentist emergency near me," you can save yourself from costly treatments.
At Parkwood Dental, we understand the urgency and importance of addressing dental emergencies. Our licensed dentists can save you from pain, infection, and even more extensive treatments.
Pain, Pain, Go Away!
Ignoring dental pain can lead to a worsening condition, making the pain more intense and the treatment more extensive. What starts as a simple cavity can turn into a major infection if left untreated.
Infection Alert!
Ignoring a dental emergency like an abscess or severe gum infection can lead to serious health problems. Oral infections can spread to other parts of the body. This could cause complications such as sepsis, which can be life-threatening.
Save Your Smile!
Early intervention is crucial in saving your tooth and preventing tooth loss. Ignoring a dental emergency can lead to irreversible damage. This could result in tooth extraction and the need for costly replacements like implants or bridges.
Money Talks
Addressing dental emergencies promptly can save you money in the long run. While the cost of emergency dental care might seem daunting, delaying treatment often results in the need for more extensive (and expensive) procedures later.
Emergency Dental Care: Myths Debunked
We get it! Costs are a concern for many. However, early intervention can be more cost-effective. Many dentists, including those at Parkwood Dental, offer emergency appointments and flexible financing options. This can potentially help you manage the costs.
Myth: Emergency Dental Care is Always Super Expensive
Emergency dental visits can seem costly. But they often prevent more expensive treatments later on. Early intervention saves money by addressing the issue before it worsens.
Myth: Only Regular Appointments are Affordable
At Parkwood Dental, we offer flexible financing options for dental care. We make it more affordable for patients to get the help they need right away.
Myth: You’ll Get a Huge Bill With No Warning
Dentists typically provide clear estimates and discuss costs upfront, even in emergencies. This helps you understand your options and plan for the treatment you need.
Myth: Emergency Dentists Aren’t Covered by Insurance
Many dental insurance plans cover emergency treatments. Checking with your dentist and insurance provider can reveal how much of your emergency care is covered.
Finding Help When You Need It Most: Dentist Emergency Near Me
When a dental emergency strikes, it’s essential to know where to turn for help. Here are some steps to take:
Search Online — Use search engines to find a "dentist emergency near me." Many dentists offer same-day appointments for emergencies.
No Shame in Seeking Help — Remember, dentists handle emergencies regularly. Do not worry about seeking professional help when needed.
Emergency Services — Parkwood Dental offers emergency services to address urgent dental issues.
Wrapping Up
Don’t risk your oral health and overall well-being by ignoring dental emergencies. Searching online for a dentist emergency near me can save you from pain and costly treatments. If you’re in Bradenton, FL, Parkwood Dental is here to provide the immediate care you need. Share this post to help others understand the importance of addressing dental emergencies promptly.
Contact Parkwood Dental now and get the help you need to preserve your smile and health.

check notes at the end.
All-purpose flour. My mom wanted to bake a cake for dad. “I want to do something special”, she smiled. “There’s no flour” I reminded her. My parents never really got along, so I couldn’t understand why she wanted to make that cake. I didn’t feel anything when they divorced, “about time” my 6th grade self thought. I remember coming home that day and hearing them yelling at each other again. I placed my bag down and took my shoes and my coat. I was hungry so I went to the kitchen, where my mother was. It seemed things had cooled down. She was putting the groceries away. My father came back yelling at her, he didn’t even notice I was there. My mother screamed. The flour spills and packs of frozen vegetables are scattered on the floor. I hate cleaning up messes.
Baking Soda. I loved doing science experiments. Throughout elementary school, I was always the kid chosen to represent the class for science fairs. My favorite experiment was the exploding volcano.
Salt. I had a friend in middle school who was obsessed with salt. In science class, she’d bring out tiny salt packets, pour them in the palm of her hand, and lick them. She kept this habit up for 6 months every day. Later that year, I heard she was in the hospital from a stroke. Didn’t know high blood pressure ran through the family.
Unsalted Butter. I prefer toast for breakfast. As a kid, I’d wake up before my parents and place two slices in the toaster. I had to be quiet because I didn’t want to wake my sleeping mom. I heard the floorboard creek, uh oh, she was up. I hurried up and took the bread out of the toaster. I wanted something on it. Jam? Peanut butter? There was only butter. I grabbed the butter, my mom was there with me. “Butter makes you fat.” were the last words I heard before I saw her hand slide across my face with force.
Sugar. My dad always said I had a sweet tooth. Even though Mom and him argued a lot, he always made sure to bring me home something after his nights out. 2nd grade, it was a chocolate donut. 5th grade it was chocolate chip cookies. In 7th grade it was lipstick, I was confused. The color matched the kiss mark on his neck and mom didn’t wear lipstick. In 9th grade, it was pink lipgloss, and I accepted it. My then-boyfriend said he loved the way it looked on me.
Vanilla extract. Why is it so expensive to buy? I wanted to give her a gift. Her birthday was coming up. She always talked about this dagger necklace that was on display every time we walked by the store. I think I had mixed feelings for my best friend, romantic feelings. I wanted to impress her but I only had forty dollars to my name, well, at least until my next paycheck came out.
Two large eggs. My sports bra couldn’t fit me anymore. My 5th-grade body is now my 9th-grade body. I had to buy a bigger bra. I told my mom, and she said to just check in the back of her drawer and use one of hers. I didn’t know my size. At school, in the janitor's closet, my boyfriend said he loved my breasts, and he grabbed them harshly, we continued to make out. I asked my best friend to help me figure out my size, she took me to the department shop and they measured me. She also wanted to grab a new bra. “We have the same bra size,” she said as she took off her shirt. We were in the same changing room, her breasts were large in my opinion. I wanted to kiss them.
Chocolate Chip Chunks. I used to steal chocolate from this small corner store near me. I’d eat them at a nearby park on the swings. If my mom saw me eating this, she’d kill me. “It'll make you fat.” I didn’t care. I’m always hungry at home and I’m tired of eating apples and carrots for snacks. I just want to be able to eat sweets like the other children.
