Samarkand Overture

Otabek, who in the show is the last character to appear. I focused on the image of severe, but multi-layered history of East Europe and Central Asia, and at the same time, my idea was to represent Otabek as the mysterious dark horse that he is in this music. This composition is a quite difficult one to perform with very fast tempo on top of that, and I remember it very well, that during recording, even members of Ensemble FOVE, a gathering of extremely skillful musicians, were grumbling about 'how difficult this score is... damn it'.

(+ Matsushiba Taku's comment) I think that in the performance, the string instruments, tense and firm, just as Otabek, very well captured his stern, but at the same time gallant vibe. At first, the music was supposed to be in Hungarian style, but the direction we took then changed more and more, and the style changed to Russian, but to not make it too similar to Yurio's music... I composed the music, trying to fill in all the little gaps.

but YOI is so great bc not only does it give people an understanding of figure skating which is if you just watch it closely and follow it so interesting, intense, beautiful, invigorating and just everything a sport should be but also introduces people back to classical music

Super Otayuri fic Recommendation

So, I’m reading what is possibly one of the most beautiful fics I’ve ever read, and it happens to be a Otayuri one, so I felt it was my duty to share it here.

The name is “Symphony in Four Movements” and is based on each song Otabek and Yuri have skated (Samarkand Overture, On love agape, Symphony no.9 and Allegro Appassionato) and it follows Otayuri’s encounters through time. Yes, it’s like past lives, which is an idea not very common, but really good. 

And the writer is AMAZING! This persons has a gift, I’m not kidding, it’s a real pleasure to read this fic.

Samarkand Overture

Original costume design by Sagiri Yuuko (Chacott)

The order was "Hungarian classic", so I used a basic folk design. The yellow, green and red elements are different kind of fabric sewn on the costume and decorated with stones. The crosses on the vest are strings and the bottom part of legs are white tights, the trousers are made from velour fabric. The tassels on the sides of the knees are made of leather-like fabric. Otabek is the quiet type and his vibe is a bit similar to Seung-Gil - I think they are the type of skaters that don't have many request when ordering their costumes, but they will tell you clearly if they don't like something.

Kazakhstan folk costumes are very stylish and locals look so good in them - my aim when designing this costume was to make you think that when you look at Otabek. How did I do?

Beethoven's 9th Symphony, 2nd Movement "Advent" -Genesis Edition-

The keyword for this design was "momentum powerful enough to found a new country". I've heard that the music is also majestic and heroic, so that was my base for the design. The decoration on his chest is supposed to be an emblem of a fictional country. In the original design the whole costume was gold. Otabek is also competing with a huge appetite to win, I think, so I gave a dazzling color a try. There is a fringe around each of his shoulders. The pattern on his shoulders, sleeves and hips is lace - I decided to finish the design with a darker color, brown or black. The lace is based on a black organza fabric, with embroidery on top that is decorated with sequins.

In this design, I wanted to express cool elegance and it's a combination of Kazakhstan folk costume and matador costume. The upper part of chest is sparkly, so it looks very good in the anime, when the costume is in motion.

What do you first think of when you hear the word “domestic”?

When I write domestic fics, I usually think of soft, everyday moments – mornings spent together over breakfast, or quiet afternoons lounging in bed and just being in each other's presence, things like that. Moments where the focus is just two people and the quiet between them.

For all the unconventionality of his outfit, Yuri plays as he always does: precise, controlled; a study of technique. All the ups and pauses of the score, the textbook tempo. He plays in the way he knows teachers, critics, judges like to hear. Impeccable, clean, orthodox.

So Otabek takes a deep breath. And then the music changes.

It’s still the Samarkand Overture, only he’s sped it up, just a little, a quarter tempo faster. The song’s mood shifts a little as well, something harsher and wilder, a whirlwind instead of a looming storm; a stampede. It thrums under his skin like static. And as Otabek’s fingers fly over the keys, he looks up at Yuri.

His violinist has turned, is looking at him with disbelief, but he’s still playing.

Skilled as he is, Yuri adapts to Otabek’s new arrangement, fingers dancing over the strings as his bow flies back and forth. He tears his eyes away from Otabek, squeezes them shut. His slender body shifts with the movements of his arms, twisting and swaying, and Otabek knows he cannot be the only one rendered breathless by this sight.

Tempestuous, fervent, and intense: Yuri is unlike anything he’s ever seen.

So Otabek provokes him further, pushes the both of them. His fingers continue to play, a declaration and a challenge.

Yuri Plisetsky, are you listening?

(Otabek is not a prodigy, but he refuses to be something less.)

And Yuri—

It’s almost like he’s dancing, the way he’s thrown himself into the song. Undaunted, he matches Otabek note for note, and there is a challenge of his own in his music. It is – exhilarating, a thrill in Otabek’s body, like he’s been set alight by the sparks coming from the friction of their duet.

As Otabek slams out the last chord; as Yuri pulls his bow over the last note, throws his arm out to the side, chest heaving – Otabek has his answer.

What’s the most appealing aspect of the character Yuri Plisetsky to you?

Yuri is my favorite character in YOI for plenty of reasons, but what I love most is how real and relatable he is in his insecurity and determination. I've written more than enough meta on him, but there's a line in a(n as-yet unpublished) fic I have that I think gets him very well—

Yuri is fifteen and flying by himself across continents, to a town he doesn’t know. He doesn’t have much of a plan beyond 'bring Victor back', doesn’t have a way of executing it beyond being angry and more than a little desperate. He shouts, and for him it’s the same as begging.

Because that's how he is; he hides his uncertainties behind a veneer of anger and defensiveness, he tries and wants so much. And I love that about him. It's very honest.

In the mid 15th century, much of the eastern portion of the former Golden Horde (the White Horde) came under the control of the Chinggisid ruler Abu'lkhayr Khan, under whose rule the Uzbeks would emerge. Abu'lkhayr's efforts to crush potential threats to his position by killing off other descendants of Chinggis Khan's eldest son Jochi led to the flight of Janibek and Kirei, the founders of the Kazakh Khanate, from Uzbek territory to Moghulistan. In 1468, either against Janibek and Kirei or the Oirats, Abu'lkhayr and his son were killed in battle, and the Uzbek Khanate fractured. The Kazakhs came to dominate the north eastern expanse of this territory, while Abu'lkhayr's grandson Muhammad Shaybani (Shiban(Shayban) was one of Jochi's sons) was forced to live for years effectively as a raider and minor, regional lord, slowly gaining followers in a similar manner to Janibek and Kirei. By the early 16th century, Shaybani was able to establish his own empire in modern Uzbekistan, the Shaybanid empire based in Samarkand and Bukhara. Much of his reign was occupied with conflict with his neighbours: the Kazakhs to the north, the Safavids to the south and Moghuls to the east. Shaybani fought several campaigns against another minor Chinggisid lord, Babur, who fled south and eventually established the Moghul Empire in India. Shaybani's campaigns in the first decade of the 16th century were largely successful, until he bit off a bit more than he could swallow against the Safavid Shah, Ismail I. In 1510, the Shah defeated the Khan at Merv, having felt threatened by Shaybani's overtures to the Ottoman Empire, the Safavid's great enemy in the west. Ismail had Shaybani dismembered and his skull encased in gold to use as a drinking goblet. Ismail came to view himself as an invincible conqueror, an aura which was shattered when he was defeated at Chaldiron in 1514 by the Ottoman Sultan Selim I "the Grim," Shaybani's potential ally and avenger. Safavid horse archers proved highly disadvantaged against the artillery and gunpowder of the Ottoman lines, and Chaldiron is often presented as the end of the period of the dominance of horse mounted archers on the battlefield.  Selim went on to greatly expand the Ottoman Empire, while Ismail spent the rest of his life despondent and fell into alcoholism, drinking his sorrows away with the skull of Shaybani.
