An Enraging Misconception About A Cinderella Story

(And now for something completely different)

A Cinderella Story is one of my favorite movies from the 2000s, one of my favorite movies period. I don’t care what Rotten Tomatoes or IMDb say. My single solitary individual opinion obviously holds more weight than two big critical websites.

It’s a cute movie about these two teens who form a close relationship talking to each other on cellphones, though they don’t initially know who the other is.

There is however one misconception about this movie that makes me steam, specifically a misconception around the male lead, Austin Ames played by the legendary actor and heartthrob Chad Michael Murray.

There’s this pep-rally scene where Sam Montgomery (the Cinderella in question played by the fabulous iconic Hilary Duff) is publicly humiliated by the typical mean girls in every teen movie and it’s really sad and Austin doesn’t intervene.

The site “TV Tropes” acts like Austin actively rejects Sam and picks on her because she’s in food-service like the others do.

But, like, this doesn’t happen at all and isn’t even eluded to.

First of all, we see Austin interact with Sam a handful of times (he didn’t know she was “Princeton Girl”, the girl he wasn’t talking to on his cell and whom he met online) and their interactions were always civil and friendly. In two instances he interacts with her while she’s working at the diner, and he’s respectful to her, he doesn’t look down on her and they have a meaningful conversation the second time.

Secondly, as I said before, nothing about this screams “rejection or self-importance”.

Sure, he doesn’t defend her from the merciless teasing, which is a bad, but it’s not like he joined in or visibly agreed with the whole thing, he clearly felt guilty about not doing anything.

We see him try to message her again, he just can’t think of what to say, and later when Sam confronts him, she says this…

Really the reason he didn’t do anything, was more because he was afraid to express himself and out himself in front of everybody. Sure he should’ve stood up for her, but, he was also kinda being humiliated, the people at that pep-rally were also reading from his emails and kinda making fun of him, he just wasn’t publicly outed like Sam was.

And near at the end of the movie after this iconic line.

He actively ignores what everyone else thinks. He ditches the football game to go be with Sam and reconcile in front of everyone, she’s all that matters.

I will not accept any slander for this masterpiece of a film. I am too attached to a now 20 year old movie and am I overthinking teen romantic-comedy, ABSOLUTELY! But I don’t care.

Best of the early 2000s modern Cinderellas. Not even Disney?! Hillary Duff and Chad Micheal Murray do the whole Cinderella story in High School! Everyone in it is amazing. Sam can wear roller skates and go to a masquerade ball in the same night! And she is exposed as Cinderella which is different from the typical story line where the stepfamily tries to keep her identity hidden. And she makes it rain! In a drought!

So the love interest in this is the worst but Hilary Duff is pretty iconic. The moment that she came out to the dance in the dress and the 2000s pop song is playing… it made my childhood.

She's a classic. She's Hilary Duff. She got a kiss in the rain during drought.

Because she still has the stepmother (and dead father) and step-sisters who treat her horribly and the charming "prince"/football star, but she actually saves herself! As far as I remember, there is no shoe fitting scene, Austin finds out in another way - from emails that Sam's sisters find and spread around school. But Sam stands up to her stepmother after finding a letter (and will) from her father and sorts her life off before getting the guy.

And, to be terribly honest, I've never been a fan of Cinderella stuff, but I did like this film. Probably because of the change to the story and Hilary Duff. And Sam's best friend Carter.

Mary:

This movie is the best live-action Cinderella movie I have no notes. The chemistry between Mary and Joey Parker is way better than Hilary Duff and Austin Ames in Cinderella Story. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know was such a moment in time.

what’s your top 10 favorite female characters?

(in no order)

1.rogue (X-MEN) - my first fave character and still one of my faves. i know most people seem to think anna paquin was miscast and/or the filmmakers didn't make the character as badass, i guess, as she's in the comics, but i like this take on her plus nostalgia def factors in (and it rarely does w me). she's just a scared teenager who wants to fit in; it's a great take on the character imo.

2. helen prins (MANHATTAN) - my girl, my number one girl. a genius who i badly wish i knew what sam shaw had planned for her in the cancelled four seasons (her role in JUPITER is kinda small, but significant). only person who could take a jab at robert oppenheimer AND impress him. AN ICON. SAM, PLEASE ANSWER MY TEXTS ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED TO HER!!!

3. peggy olson (MAD MEN) - i mean. do i need to explain her? i could go on forever about how great she is. no one will ever do it like she did.

4. tess ocean (OCEAN'S trilogy) - i hate it when people say she's the worst character in the franchise because she actually rules and w/o her, we wouldn't have the trilogy. the ~~julia roberts~~ scene in TWELVE is iconic, i do NOT accept criticism of it or its meta nature.

5. sarah pierce (LITTLE CHILDREN) - i love all of future oscar winner nominee todd field's female leads, but i'm giving the edge to sarah because she's the lead in my fave film of his and i love the book, too. it's funny cause i think kate winslet gives my least fave performance of his female leads (tho i still love her performance and i think she should have won the oscar for it), but i love the settings of the suburbs, the unhappiness she feels in the position she's in her life, the way she pines for brad, the book club scene. just a great, great character.

6. selina meyer (VEEP) - i mean, fuck the last two seasons. it's very much fuck the last two seasons. but selina was great even in them (which is more than i can say for literally every other character). i hate the phrase 'no one else could play this character but x' cause it's overused, but it does apply her. no one else could have played selina meyer but julia louis-dreyfus.

7. elizabeth jennings (THE AMERICANS) - KERI RUSSELL EMMY WHEN???

8. julia ogden (MURDOCH MYSTERIES) - i love her evolution throughout the show, i love her relationship w william murdoch (i could write a dissertation on it tbh), i love that she's a trailblazer, i love everything about her. she's on my tv screen rn and she's just the coolest.

9. addison montgomery (GREY'S ANATOMY) - i rewatched the first eight seasons late last year/earlier this year and whenever she popped up, i'd practically cheer. how can you not lover her?

10. lucy moderatz (WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING) - i never wanted to see a character be happy more than her. this is sandra bullock's best role and one of the best characters in a romcom and you can quote me on that!
