20 Questions for Fic Writers

I haven't been tagged in this one (yet) but I'm in a major procrastination mood this morning so answering tumblr questions is currently way more appealing than actual writing so let's do this XD

How many works do you have on AO3? 67 1/2 - the 1/2 is because I have a very little Obidala-ish thing which is currently sitting in my files waiting to be published when I find an extra minute (like right now, for instance, except that I'm doing a survey instead oops ;))

What's your total AO3 word count? Ummm...let's just say if I had a dollar for every word of fanfic I've ever written, my bank account would be very, very happy.

What fandoms do you write for? Mostly Game of Thrones. But my full fandoms list has 25 unique fandoms, some major, some minor, and some where the entire tag is owned by me.

What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Île Aux Ours, Jamais T'oublier, Sunrise on the Jade Sea, La Nuit Venait, The Heir of Riverrun which are all Jorleesi fics except for THOR, which I'm pleasantly surprised to find so high in the rankings (although to be fair there's Jorleesi in that one too :)). And just because I was curious, my top five excluding any Jorleesi content are: New World Symphony (Vicbourne - oh I loved them so, history be damned), Dreams and Dragonglass (Viserys x Alicent from HotD), A Girl, A Drowned Man (ahem, Jaime Lannister x Arya Stark - don't even ask XD), over time and tide and death leaping (Obidala4Ever <3), and Easily onward, thorough flowers and weed (Siegfried x Audrey from the new All Creatures Great & Small - S5 is our season friends, I can feel it)

Do you respond to comments? Yes, all of them (except for the obvious trolls). I heart my readers and have had such good times in the comment section <3 Speaking of which, I'm behind with replies again. Just know my inbox is glaring at me.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Ummm, that's a hard one because I usually reach for the fluff endings with both hands. But I suppose...right now it's got to be my Hunger Games fic, and she gained the willow tree. I mean, it's intensely angsty, even more so than the source material, and may remain that way forever (at least until I update it and fix what I broke lol)

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Almost all of my Jorleesi fics have unabashedly happy endings but I think Île Aux Ours edges out the others just because basically everyone (spoiler alert: except for Viserys, Rhaegar and the Night King) live! And all my ships survive! And House Mormont is flourishing! And the Seven Kingdoms are at peace for once! (at least until I write the sequel ;))

Do you get hate on fics? Only on the Game of Thrones fics, and relatively speaking, very, very rarely. It was slightly more common right at the end of Game of Thrones (people had feelings) but it's almost completely died off in recent years...which is a relief. Because trolls are easily ignored but they don't make anyone's day brighter.

Do you write smut? Again, rarely. But, ya know, sometimes things happen ;)

Do you write crossovers? Yes, but usually it's not what I would consider a true crossover. More me adapting one film/series to the setting/plot/characters of another. The only true crossover I've ever written is, I believe, this one: light goes the weather-wind and the feathered starling (where Tom Bombadil and Melisandre of Asshai meet up and make a trade - sometimes writing brains are weird)

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge?

Have you ever had a fic translated? Again, not that I know of? Although I had a reader request permission to translate a couple of my Jorleesi fics into Russian so that may have happened and I just never received a link from them.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Ohhhh, yesssssss. My forever partner-in-Jorleesi-crime is @salzrand <3 9 fics and counting :)

What's your all-time favorite ship? Based on my writing activity over the last 5-6 years, I think there's really only one correct answer here and it's the lobsters. A bear and his dragon-girl. A princess and her steadfast knight. They're perfect, they're dreamy. And forever inspiring. I cannot. But other than Jorleesi, I have to give top billing to Jane/Lisbon, Obi-Wan/Padme, Dickon/Mary, Jean Valjean/Fantine, Christy/Neil, Lexie/Mark because these are ships that have stayed with me for at least a decade or longer and are part of my DNA at this point.

What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Ugh. Don't talk to me about unfinished fics. They judge me with their Chapter 1/? eyes. They glare at me disapprovingly each time I log into AO3. And I know that there are a few that have been waiting on an update for a long, long time (and some of you have probably given up hope that I'll ever return to them), but never say never...at least until I'm dead XD

What are your writing strengths? I think I have a flair for writing scenery and believable multi-generational family dynamics. I also think I'm fairly good at fixing canon disappointments with some fun and unique twists (it's the soap opera training, I swear XD). I try to keep dialogue very natural, characterization at least partly canon-based and do a lot of research for my fics on time-period details, with mostly successful results...lol well, that's the hope anyway. And I think another strength that has made me successful in writing age-gap ships especially is that I can write character relationships in a way that might go beyond the whole attraction thing and touch on deeper connections (or something).

What are your writing weaknesses? Endings. Aren't they everyone's? Titles. And my pacing can be off sometimes. I think I get away with it in fic-writing for the most part but I have a few fics that aren't as "tight" as they could be. There are a few words/phrases that I rely on too much. And I'm sure I have a bunch of others that I'm unaware of.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I haven't done this much and I really don't venture outside French if I try it. I rely on friends who are native speakers to make sure I'm not saying anything off the wall.

First fandom you wrote for? Titanic 😍 I had to save Thomas Andrews. He looked so sad and despairing winding that clock at the end. I should have probably saved Leo too but let's just assume in my version, Kate scooched over let him share the door XD

Favorite fic you've written? Impossible to choose. I love them all. Okay, okay, Sunrise on the Jade Sea. But only because you're forcing me to answer <3

Hiya, anon!  The longer I’m here and the rare times I get this ask, I realize I’m not the right person to answer this. I’ve maybe read not more than twenty dany x jorah fics in my lifetime (there are now 645 O_O). Despite part of my soul taken over by this ship, I am unfortunately not an avid reader of it, not because the writers aren’t awesome - like they seriously are freaking talented - but because canon content for this particular pairing is enough to enrapture me.

They make camp a little outside the summit of the Red Mountains, and by the time they do, Gendry’s almost missing fucking Harrenhall. Since Amberly, his body feels too heavy and his mind too fast. He wants to go home, back to Storm’s End. He wants to be there to meet Willis and Jocie’s baby, try to survive Dag’s cleaning, and even learn more about Stormlands houses with Pod. Last one he remembered was called Peasebury, who ate people sometimes. He thinks hearing about cannibalism would be better than listening to Bruno go on another story about Dorne.

“That’s the Kissing Fish, a rock formation named because it looks like-”

“I don’t care,” he says, patience breaking. He just wants to be alone. 

So he does it himself, walking away from the campsite and not hearing the way Bruno tries to laugh through discomfort.

"Just punch me or something and get it over with," John says, staring up at the ceiling and laying on his back on the dorm room.

Bobby pauses from where he's been folding laundry. In silence. For the last ten minutes. It's passive aggressive, somehow, and John doesn't have time for it.

Honorable mentions: Renruki, Ichihime, (Bleach) Rivetra, Levihan,(Attack on Titan) Sanami, (One Piece) Gajevy, Nalu, Jerza (Fairy Tail), Edwin (FMA), Izuocha (BNHA)

10.Todomomo

I’ll admit I’m really new to this ship and I need to catch up with BNHA but they seem cute together. That one moment where Momo opens her uniform to use her quirk and Todoroki quickly looks away bad boy having pervy thoughts made me laugh.

9.Zorobin

There’s a bunch of moments that make me catch my breath with these two. I love how their relationship begins as the whole, “ What’s she plotting?” deal with Zorro being highly suspicious of her to “ You got carried away and said too much” when Kuma had stated to Zorro that she “had to die.” She didn’t by the way. Lots of good moments like this where he comes to her aid and she also comes to his. 

8.SoMa

A very cute ship. Also another pair where each party saves the other on numerous occasions. I’m a sucker though for the whole protective-guy-makes -sure-the-girl-doesn’t-get- hurt sort of thing.

That forehead tap we get asdfjkl; 

It still makes me mad to this day-why?! I for sure thought that they were going to kiss! 

7.Naruhina

This one ship is probably the oldest ship I have on this list. Naruhina I’ve followed for a longtime because Naruto was the first legit anime (I don’t know if you want to count Pokemon but at that time I didn’t really ship anything) that I watched and read. It was just a classic to me with the shy girl crushing on the loud and somewhat obnoxious boy. Polar opposites from each other. For years I followed Naruto always getting excited when they’d have a moment together. I never expected Naruto to end the way it did though so I throughly pleased when I found out they had been married with two kids! 

6. Gutsca 

One of the most romantic pairings I’ve ever come across. Very lovely to see this ship blossom into what it has become. Basically tsundere guy meets tsundere girl who basically dislike each other mainly Casca hating on Guts for having Griffith favor him instead.

 Not until they sit down and talk to each other heart to heart about their history do they start to fall in love. That moment where Casca lets herself fall off the side of the cliff and Guts going tumbling after her is where I fell for this pair. 

5.Royai

Another one of the older ships on this list. Royai has been with me for a longtime. I feel like watching Full Metal Alchemist was almost sort of a rite of passage for me into the anime community so it goes way back. 

The moment that Riza screams at Lust, “ You bitch!” when she learns Roy is probably dead is something that sticks with me and gives me chills. However when Roy made it back alive I cheered and it was then I realized I shipped them. Plus Riza has saved Roy’s ass on more then one occasion haha

4. Rinshi

Oh my god this ship is so pure. Shiemi starts off not trusting Rin because she realizes that he’s part demon. His attraction to her at first is extremely obvious to me. He blushes almost every time he talks to her or when she’s asking a favor or something of him. 

However on the other hand, she starts out thinking that she is not even worthy to be his friend but that all changes quickly. Opposite personalities as well here. Poor Rin thinking that she “friend zoned him” I think it’s much more then that though. 

3.Yatori

SO many moments with these two get me, ugh. I can’t get enough of mom/dad Hiyori/Yato with their fluff ball son Yukine 💖 haha The moment that Yato showed up for the FIRST time was when Hiyori was saying that there wasn’t anyone that she liked in her life as a s/o. From there on out I was hooked.

Their story is so good and even though Yato is a total goofball most of the time he is protective of her. Also when she regained her memory and he’s leaning over her concerned the way she cupped his face in her hand left me in tears. 

2.Gruvia

Gruvia has been with me for a bit. When I first watched Gray fight her I thought, “Well she’s clearly obsessed with him even though she’s trying to defeat him. I don’t know how this one is going to turn out.” So I kept on watching. In the end, when he caught her hand as she was falling it made me catch my breath. He did care about what happened to her even though he didn’t really let onto the fact during their fight.

Now with the end of Fairy Tail, I can see the culmination of their relationship. Gray’s attitude of brushing off her affections has nearly disappeared and he would clearly do anything for her even if it meant dying -and Juvia the same- as we saw in the recent manga chapters. These two genuinely care for each other.

1.Hitsuhina

*sigh* What did I do to deserve Hitsuhina? Honestly... This is my OTP and OTPs but perhaps one of the most underrated in Bleach. I knew from the moment that Toshiro was fighting against Gin how angry he had been that Momo had been turned against him. 

The words he spoke took the breath right out of me:

“You made her grip her sword so hard that her hands bled!” and

“I told you I would kill you if you made her bleed!” 

These words where spoken by a boy who truly cared for her and would protect her no matter the cost. I fell deep unlike I ever had for a ship before and ever since. After that I couldn’t see enough interactions between them. It never was enough. I fangirled every time they made it onto the screen. But of course, I can’t forget the angst. It may sound strange to say this, but the suffering they went through made me care more for both of them to the point where I just couldn’t tolerate it to see something bad happen to them. 

The moment where Toshiro stabbed her fucking hurt. The sorrow and pain I saw in his eyes at this tragic mistake shook me to my core. This reinforced to me just how special she was to him. 

To be honest, I could go on and on about these two but everything I would type would just never be enough to explain how special they’ve become to me.

Did someone say "How do you best overthink song recommendations?" because I feel summoned. When @fandemymy said: "I won’t lie I did not remember which song was “menling” at first but then I thought “I would make them listen to 《自己按��铃自己听》” and sat there feeling stupid." I felt that, cause 100% same. So "menling" would be my gut reaction if someone held me at gunpoint demanding a Zhou Shen recommendation. Apart from that it depends on the person and I will try to go with what could be closest to what they enjoy, if I know their taste. Also BIG YES to live performances. And also yes to recommending English songs to people who have a hard time being open to Chinese songs, though that only applies to my mum in this case and really just because even English is a kind of stretch. (I sent her "Memory" and she replied "Oh beautiful" and that is the extent of what I could have hoped for lol.) I want to recommend 天下有情人 so badly that I am linking it in case any curious soul who has never heard of Zhou Shen will give it a try, but the idea that someone listens to it and only gives me feedback like "yeah was nice" is crushing and they might as well just put a knife through my heart. (I am a very rational person, yes.)

Dalabengba works to showcase his skills, so I only choose it to impress people if I fear the emotional stuff will not be effective. Or rather if I don't want a knife through my heart The bottom line for me is, if you don't fall in love with Zhou Shen on your first listen, regardless of the song then what's wrong with you there's little hope. Then again that has never stopped me from trying it again and again. My friends are very patient and probably screaming on the inside, because hot damn I can be annoying. (@pfirsichtoertchen @salzrand you are kind souls!)

Shoutout to @theinfatuated for having a Zhou Shen friendly taste in music, you are the real MVP!! Lastly, I personally think this is a powerful recommendation!
