I could tell he was fighting to stay awake. I told him about the coastal city of Saltmaw, and the strange fish people would sell at its markets. I spoke about the tiny town of Arrow Falls and how everyone there spoke Etheric to me because they assumed I was a fiendling. I pulled stories from every corner of the world that I could think of, hoping – praying – that they would distract both of us from the dusty grey room we were sitting in. If I could whisk Leon off to somewhere far away for only a moment, that might be enough.

The screaming and crunching of wood got louder as the two of us ducked and weaved through the woods. Monos used their staff to push a branch out of the way that whipped back and smacked me in the face as they passed. I pressed a palm to my eye, scrambling to catch up.

“First— ow. Second— why are we sprinting through the woods like idiots? We’re gonna miss this lady in Saltmaw.” Monos didn’t respond, dodging another branch that managed to hit me in the ribs. I frowned. I wanted to press for an answer, but I was already out of breath from ducking past foliage and vaulting over fallen logs.
